Points in play calculation
All,

I have read the FAQ, but it seems to state that your points in play are the sum of point that you *bet*. Mine seem to exceed that, but may be correct if they are the "current value" rather than the "bet." I could do some tedious counting, but I imagine that most of the people here know, so please pardon the "lazy ask" of someone new to this site, but a long-term Dip player.

If someone is replaced, the person who got kicked doesn't get their points back, which can mean the points in the pot are the sum of all bets for all players ever joined, not just the current 7. Does this answer your question?

Are you referring to the difference between "Bet" and "Worth"?
yoak (1676 D)

Thank you, but I don't think I made myself clear. Unless a third option is the right answer. I'll say it a different way.

Let's say that I am new and start with 100 D. I enter a game with a required bet of 30 and another with a required bet of 25. My understanding is that I would have 45 D remaining to bet in new games. Let's say that in my 30-bet, I make some remarkable gains and my position is now "Worth" 40. My understand is that I still have 45 that I could use to enter new games. Another possibility would be 35, but that doesn't seem to happen.

Now let's say that in the 20-game, owing to England's treachery, I am eliminated. Assuming that I'm right above, I would expect to go from having 45 D available for new games to having 65, as my "original" 100 replenishes, barring the 35 bet that that is still active.

This is how I read the FAQ, but this isn't what seems to have happened. I have an odd number of "In Play" on my player profile, and can't figure out how the number (currently 9) is reached for what I have available.

I have some CDs that I've taken over. One possible interpretation of what @Valis2501 said is that the original bet of those players now counts as "In Play" and could be preventing my gaining extra available points.

I'm sure that this is my misunderstanding rather than a bug, and I'm not advocating for change. I'd just like to understand the mechanism. I might take over fewer CDs if this last is the case, as it is often a charity act, and consuming my ability to enter new games might be undesirable.

I happen to be a programmer and am in the process of building my own version of the code and soon can just look for myself, but there is one case I can imagine that could be a bug in the recent change that seems very plausible. We now charge zero points to take over a CD. It displays as "Bet 0." But what if the old, computed price is still used in figuring out your In Play / Available points? If that is the case, my number is pretty close to accurate. So... *maybe* that's a bug, but I don't know nearly enough about what should happen to make that as a positive claim.

What are your current Available Points, Total Points, and Points In Play?
leon1122 (190 D)

Your points are not replenished until all games you have played are finished.

The replenishment description is a little weird. Really, replenishment should be its own section.

Add it to the epic FAQ rewrite, I guess. ;)

Also, yoak, note that if you pay to enter an anonymous game, the "bet" required to enter that game is *not* factored into your "points in play". This may be a contributing factor to your confusion.

But the main answer is here:

"Now let's say that in the 20-game, owing to England's treachery, I am eliminated. Assuming that I'm right above, I would expect to go from having 45 D available for new games to having 65, as my "original" 100 replenishes, barring the 35 bet that that is still active."

In that case, your points would only be replenished when that game comes to an end - not at the point of your elimination.

Thanks all. That made my understanding better.

@Jamie, I believe anonymous games are factored into your own view of your points in play, but not others'.

Kinda related: Here's an interesting point that just came up in my game in the tournament. One guy we're nervous about shows 100 D, and my ally in the game told me in press that he actually has thousands of points. I wondered how that could be, and he explained that he's in a one-person locked game with huge points. That's an interesting technique to hide your strength!

Remember, I'm totally new here and just learning the site. I've played Diplomacy for 25 years, though, and can appreciate the sneak. :-)

Anyone here tried Subterfuge?
Its an iOS/Droid game similar to Neptune's Pride somewhat. Slow Realtime where movement takes hours to days to resolve, no RNG, and based on the Diplomacy tradition of deception and alliances. The key difference to Pride is a toroidal map and a different win condition. Anyone else given it a go?

When Does A Draw Occur?
When does a draw occur? As soon as all players vote for draw...or when all players have voted for draw and the next turn is adjudicated? I ask because I am in a game where the draw votes are hidden.

Country 2: C->B; D Support C->B

spectating games
Is there a way to see the global chat in a game your not in? it wouldn't make it so that you could tell someone something they wouldn't have known otherwise like showing private messages would do. I'm just wondering if there is a specific reason why you can't.

Removing from game?
I joined a special game, but it quickly lost any sort of extra rules. I wouldn't mind, but it is a 10 day phase world map. Is it possible for a mod to remove me without taking a hit to my record?

Mods can cancel games but can mods force draw? for example 3 players have played for weeks and a one player breaks a site rule implying the game should be cancelled but if the 2 remaining players agree to draw then can the mods force draw?
