Rival/hatred game variant
I'd like to play a game mode where each player is secretly given a unique rival (so no two players share a rival), and the only players counted at the end of the draw are those who have both survived and eliminated their rival. A solo doesn't need to eliminate their rival and rivals aren't necessarily symmetrical.

Unknown Player in Anonymous Private Game
I'm completely new to Diplomacy and this website. I made a private game and explained to my friends how to join my private match. Though only 2 people say they've joined, I have 3 anonymous players other than myself registered. Is it possible one of them joined twice? I know by the time stamps that it was one of the first two players who joined the game, the times are only a minute apart, and I am wondering if the small time frame is just a player joining twice.

Thank you for hosting, CB. You made it more challenging on yourself than previous sims had been and you held your own. Participation made it a challenge and I think that in the future we shouldn't start without around 10 players, but no harm no foul. I had fun.

As for why I killed brain, I think it is self explanatory. I talked to multiple councilors before doing anything and confirming that I wasn't the only one who was losing interest specifically because of brain's antics. Those of you that I didn't speak to didn't get a chance to voice your opinion and I'm sorry about that. Posting too much is a problem, but when the sole purpose of your posting is to drive others away from fighting you, debating you, discussing things with you, or wanting anything to do with you, one gets creative. I figured I would either take action or drop out of the game if the only further action I could take would be to continue arguing and debating and continue to get shouted over. Thus, I organized an attack, and won. As I said privately to brain, I'm sorry, but I wasn't left much recourse as basically anything I wanted to do or say publicly was getting drowned out and other people had simply quit trying to post. If anyone particularly enjoyed him hurting our colony's metrics and simultaneously making it far more difficult to get anything done due to the excess noise, then I apologize for overstepping my bounds.

My win condition made things more fun and interesting for me. I was supposed to ensure that the colony collapsed or was taken over by Playdipia. I had set up a couple of different ways in order to ensure that this was possible - a) I set up a system of government and got myself elected governor, and had planned on trying a couple of power plays had the game gone into my second term, and b) I ensured that no fortifications of any kind like a wall would be built before the Playdipians arrived. I had planned on working a little bit, very gradually, to raise corruption and eventually perhaps incite a rebellion of some sort, whether instigated by colonists or slaves I wasn't sure yet. I was also told some time ago that the Nain Rouge was on the island and kept it to myself for a long time, eventually sharing with Ike but without much purpose. I was excited to see him finally show up. I think I would have eventually been able to make that rebellion happen, but it would have required some serious patience, more than perhaps I had at this stage.

I would also like to say that with regard to win conditions, I didn't really focus on it all that heavily. This is a long game. Brain spoke of having a win condition privately to me where he killed a certain number of people, and then quitting the game because he didn't like it. Why? Whether you meet your win condition or not, the point of this game is to have fun, build it up, and work together in order to do something. My goal, even with my win condition, was to make the new colony successful, at least marginally so, simply because that's what I had the most fun doing. I don't think that a win condition should allow for someone to lose sight of that.

Again, thanks CB, and if we can do this again sometime perhaps with more players, that would be awesome.

Translation: you as a player - not a character- hate the way I play forum games. You killed me and blamed drooping participation in my passionate attempts at making poliicies, playing, staying active, strongly arguing my points and playing to my wincon. You didnt have a wincon. You killed me becayse you find me annoying and didnt care about my ideas. You admitted you just wanted me out of the game. After claiming you like me as a person you then argued I shouldnt be allowed in simulators anymore too. You also complained about my posting in mafiA

Am i too assume youll be using this out-of-game morbid hatred for me and my talkung style to justify lynching me regardless of wincon also?

Seeing as how you didnt even have a wincon you killed me for fun. Dont be a bitch and try to hide behind that you polled the other councillors. If they wanted me to shut up they couldve very easily explained why they disagreed.

Brain: Bo's right, My enjoyment of the game dropped sharply after you arrived. I wasn't one of those consulted, but I had the exact same thought as him: remove you, or remove myself. Also I'll point out that both bo and I DID actively tell you to shove it on many occasions in game before you were killed. I can't speak to the Mafia game, but if you act there like you did here, I'm all for you being banned from this kind of thing. It doesn't matter what your wincon was or how "in character" you were. Your actions were actively disruptive and made the game less fun for everyone else. Rule #1 is always have fun, so on that grounds alone I'd say he was justified in his actions. It also used a game mechanic to remove you rather than forcing the hands of the players or GM to remove out of game, which was coming if that didn't work.

My wincon was simply to Survive, because....*drum roll*.....I was the the witch!

it was a good game CB. I did enjoy playing it for the most part.

Another thing that kills peoples desire to join is needless drama. What killed sci fi sim was when byron-tweeters-kemch-blades when we had a wild series of events culminating in an entire faction being destroyed by a player and fallout from me allowing it.

Drama kills these games. Controversy scares new players away. When GMs are making up rules and encouraging killing the other players and then denying them re-entry it makes other would-be players less likely to want to join. Which is a shame because Byron was doing just fine at pleasing his 2 active players by giving them plots and fun moments.

Byrons tech tree here is the gold standard for how these should be done. He was organized and did a phenomenal job of creating a place you could imagine in your mind. But he let the game fail for me as a player. The wincon idea was too counter-intuitive to coop play. Also phase length continues to be a difficult issue. Here 48 hours felt too long. The players very limited discussion and insistence on ostracizing other players hurt the appeal of the game for would-be joimers

My wincon was to successfully incite a rebellion against the crown. My plan was to make friends with the slaves and use their outrage at the way they were treated to foment anger...

The fact is that as much as I really enjoy the theory of these games, I just can't commit the sort of time necessary to make them work. It's a shame, but that's how it is. Between being at work all day and actually wanting to, you know, spend time with my wife and friends, it's just a bit too much!

It's a shame, as I say, because I think this is a really cool idea and actually think both Brain and Byron hosted games that were interesting and enjoyable...

So I had to unmite brainbomb so I could see.

Brain- I have some challenges here but respect your opinion in the matter.
A) phases are an issue with almost every forum game even mafia and it really comes down to Who is playing. If 10 people are playing with very different goals then that 48 hours is needed to discuss and move forward. But if 5 people who all agree are playing 24 hours is likely enough.
B) the win-cons were a major addition to the sim that on my sims will continue. It is very hard to encourage discussion and debate when all players have 21st century perspectives on a 16th century culture. I am sure most of you would usually agree slavery is atrocious. But I needed to encourage at least a few councilors to want slavery. Likewise I needed coucilors who wanted independence even though loyalty to the crown is always safer. I needed councilors who wanted playdipian control to make wars more political. The purpose was to encourage discussion and see how people played their independent games within the confines of the overall game. A more realistic approach to government.
C) I don’t think that players should be discouraged from playing because players can kill each other. First of all I made killing another player a difficult thing requiring more than one participant and even then having a chance of causing more damage to the attacker. The resulting penalties were realistic and hurtful. Loss of the doctor temporarily and likely Moran permanently if other negative actions occurred. The loss of come support of the king. Morale loss. Corruption gain. The colony was hit in almost every metric. Very reasonable and balanced response.
D) i was completely fine with allowing you to rejoin the game up until the point you began discussing ruining the game for all the other players. It is my responsibility to make sure the majority of players enjoy the game. Seems like I succeeded.
E) I am honestly taken aback and fairly upset that someone I considered a “friend” and colleague on this site became an enemy and a spoke so Ill of me. I hope that eventually you can see past this and move on. And understand that I take no fault with my actions as they were the correct decisions from start to finish.

In regards to storylines there were 3 main ones:
-Control of Colony: Who would control the colony at phase end; king, independent government, or Playdipia.
-Slavery: would slavery exist at game end; how reliant would the colony be on it.
-Monsters and Hunters: councilors with beastly Alter-egos; and the people meant to stop them. These included the serial killer, witch, and a vampire. As well as a detective, and a beast hunter.

The first three players were assigned roles at complete random. Then roles were assigned based on need. As an example let’s say the first three were assigned:
Witch
Abolitionist
Brotherhood Agent

Then the next draw would be from one of a direct competitor to those:
Examples:
Playdipian Spy
Plantation Owner
Beast Hunter.

This process continued until all roles were filled.

D) i was completely fine with allowing you to rejoin the game up until the point you began discussing ruining the game for all the other players. It is my responsibility to make sure the majority of players enjoy the game. Seems like I succeeded.

See the bullshit in this statement is

YOU GAVE ME A WINCON TO MURDER 5 PEOPLE.
You forced me to have that
Had I done that the game wouldve died - not just the characters - the game.
You told me it was automatic.
Later when you didnt want it to be automatic anymore you said it wasnt. Not only that as I reopted to choose my original character allow me to explain why.

-i didnt know anyone wanted me to die for talking too much.
-my botanist murderer character didnt like bo. Guess I shouldve murdered bo in phase 1 before he ever even did anything. Guess thats what shouldve been done. Derail the game right away right?

-you didnt want me to rejoin as botanist with serial killer trait because it would ruin the game. But at the start you were excited to give me a super evil - game destroying - game disrupting character. You even said itll add choas.

Why didnt you want choas later?

-you favored certain players and provided a few tiny - easy to overcome penalties for murder. Literally if this were-real life there wouldve been riots. Killing me was like killing Abe Lincoln - considering the policies I was pushing. Instead it was like the peoole were dullards and the specialists rationalized it because the gm was mad.

And as for E)
Yer just some guy who plays on this website. We happen to both enjoy simulators. Beyond that take some freaking ownership of the game you ran and stop aggrandizing yourself. Of course killing me was in the rules and mechanics. The mechanics were never the dispute. The dispute was the motive for killing me - which as far as I can tell only Ike really shouldve had such motive.

Killing me by bo's explanation actually sounds COUNTER to his wincon which was for us to lose. Yet hes praised for the decision as if it was colony-saving. Obvious hipocrisy there.

Claesars wincon sounds like it had zero reason to kill me also.

Again Im not annoyed at the mechanics. Im annoyed I was killed by two moderators of this site who used a game to veil there dislike for how I talk on the forum. Its not even a secret both of them think I ruin games by my participation. Theyve fully justified killing me because its a game. I would not be stunned to learn that they feel this way about my forum presence in general. That me disappearing would be goid for the forum.

Your play destroyed participation, just like it does in mafia. You took over everything and tried your best to dominate all discussion, and didn't have the self control to back off and allow other things to happen around you. You feel the need to fill every microscopic parcel of empty space with your own voice, and you caused countless problems that hadn't existed before you joined the game without even attempting to solve one.

Your win condition is only as meaningful as you make it. The rest of us are trying to have fun, solve problems, and be pragmatic, but all you care about is abolishing slavery? That's a terrible strategy. My win condition is to see the colony ultimately fail - I'm literally supposed to be a traitor. I'm a native of Playdipia, not of the island that the colony is established on, but I have the self control not to let that override having fun and giving us all a chance to actually play the game. If I were out there doing nothing but trying to sabotage the place, do you really not think that the others that agreed in killing you wouldn't have done the same to me? It's a slow game and a long game, and it wouldn't be fun otherwise. You need to look in the mirror and figure out how to be less abrasive and ridiculous in these games, and perhaps figure out that creating an image that other people like is better than creating an image that drives other people away. Otherwise, you're just being selfish."

The problem is I am no different on the forum than I am in these games. I take this to mean he actively thinks I deserve bad things to happen to me because I talk a lot. He outright said thats why he lynches me in mafia too. Which I guess is barely legal?

Brain, no. You are greatly misinterpreting everything that transpired. I said your first two kills would happen simultaneously and automatically once you committed to the action. I did not say they would go unnoticed or unpunished. (Take notice if the witch character who was built using the same skeleton as the serial killer; that character would cause random happenings that would cause a witch hunt that if left unanswered would cause -1Morale each phase which was the intent of the serial killer investigation) so yes your first two kills were automatic but there after you had to make your action to kill someone. That doesn’t mean you wouldn’t be discovered arrested and killed before you killed all 5. You make it seem like you were given god power. You weren’t.

To conclude you demanded I bring you back as a character you had and abandoned just for the PURPOSE of killing other players. There is a big difference between being assigned a win con that mandates you eventually kill and demanding a win con that gives you power to auto kill.

Quit your bitching. I’m going back to muting you.

[Suggestion] Alternate winning conditions
vDiplomacy has a way to set up "alternate winning conditions", e.g. to customize how many turns are played and/or how many SCs need to be conquered before a winner is declared. For example, we can have a game of Classic running for 14 turns (Fall 1907).

And no, taking over Leavers doesn't count because you always get a losing position way past the point of getting a proper strategy rolled out (that's why the original player threw the game)
