Does Empire4 (Fall of the American Empire) need to be balanced?
Unless most other Diplomacy maps, Empire4 is not very balanced and a few nations have severe disadvantages that make it very difficult for them to win while others are fairly overpowered. I can explain more if someone wants to ask.

Rival/hatred game variant
I'd like to play a game mode where each player is secretly given a unique rival (so no two players share a rival), and the only players counted at the end of the draw are those who have both survived and eliminated their rival. A solo doesn't need to eliminate their rival and rivals aren't necessarily symmetrical.

Unknown Player in Anonymous Private Game
I'm completely new to Diplomacy and this website. I made a private game and explained to my friends how to join my private match. Though only 2 people say they've joined, I have 3 anonymous players other than myself registered. Is it possible one of them joined twice? I know by the time stamps that it was one of the first two players who joined the game, the times are only a minute apart, and I am wondering if the small time frame is just a player joining twice.

Vale Hugh Hefner
Hugh Hefner dies at age 91. A controversial character, extremely successful businessman, championed some Liberal causes, gay rights, marriage equality, Native American rights, gave many authors a break, eg Alex Haley, but also it has to be said, contributed to the objectification of women and exploited women for financial gain.

[Suggestion] Alternate winning conditions
vDiplomacy has a way to set up "alternate winning conditions", e.g. to customize how many turns are played and/or how many SCs need to be conquered before a winner is declared. For example, we can have a game of Classic running for 14 turns (Fall 1907).

FFS WHY?
Why does online Diplomacy give me Germany to start with in every single game I sign up for?
Seriously, does it use region-based IP-checking? Because I'd really like to try out different countries and strategies.
And no, taking over Leavers doesn't count because you always get a losing position way past the point of getting a proper strategy rolled out (that's why the original player threw the game)

I was being Turkey always. After a few games I was being France. Sometimes game gives you your succeed countries. This is not proven. It's my idea.

It's random. You've had Germany twice and England once, according to your profile. That's not even close to noteworthy.

I think I there was a bug report 5 months ago that ppl had a high chance of getting the same country. Not sure but I think the sorting method is messed up because ppl who join the game first get chosen first. I only remember this very vaguely so not sure if this is why.

Interesting, that weighting should only be active for members who joined before 2014 though.

So... I seem to draw Italy a disproportionate amount of the time. I used to hate it, now I've played as Italy so much that I'm used to it. I have no idea how to tell if this is simply my perception or if it's backed by data, but that's been my impression.

Why is this? Is it because I'm playing with newbies so the game gives them Russia and France to try to fix game balance?

I'm not mad, but it is kinda funny.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

So even with the bug taken into account, the overall impact is still almost completely random. If there is 1 player who has been here since before 2013 playing with 6 new people then they'll get weighting towards what they have played least, but the other 6 will be random between the remaining. For all intents and purposes it's still random.

@teacon7, just poor luck. The site doesn't give newbies any preference at all. Only people who joined somewhere around 2013.

@Cleasar
a) I took over the England one from a quitter
b) the 2 Germany-games are just form this site, I joined another one slightly earlier since googling the game brought me to another site which is almost completely populated by german-speaking players.
(after a short time I realized that this there were so little foreign players on the site it was no longer explainable by differen popularity of the game by country *and* coinincidence combined and looked deeper for another, more populated one)

After hitting 3/3 games I was getting suspicious since the chance is only 1/343
(or, to put it in a pre-internet meme: "Once is bad luck, twice is coincidence, thrice is sabotage." ^^)

But yeah, as it looks from this threat, the RNG-algorithm in this implementation appears to fall a little flat on the variance & unpredictability areas when distributing factions^^
Claesar (4665 D)
29 Sep 17 UTC
No, it does not. Jmo knows a lot about the algorithm and what he says is true (as I indicated). The bug Jacob describes is only for people who registered before 2013.

Therefore, your distribution is completely random. Your reasoning is also slightly flawed, if I may say so.
For one, your chance of receiving Austria into Italy into Turkey is also 1/343

Secondly, 1/343 is a very high chance. I estimate we have about 50,000 members who played at least three games (I could be off quite a few though). That means we expect to have around 145 members who received Germany in their first three games. You are one of many!
And this excludes people who received Germany 3x in a row (but not at the start). It even excludes people who received a different country 3x!

About three months ago someone complained they received the same country 5x in a row. They were also statistically not unique.
Let me know if you receive Germany 6x in a row though! That is outside of the expected statistical window.
