1,408 balanced reduced latin squares.
Once a half a year or so ago on here, I mentioned this paper http://condor.depaul.edu/mash/Diplomacy.pdf and how I'd really like to get my hand on some of those squares. Well, Tim McMurry sent me 1,408 reduced latin squares to be used in balanced diplomacy tournaments.

The Art of Correspondence in the Game of Diplomacy
Hi folks, I just wanted to alert the webdip community to my new book. I've finally completed a two-year study of what makes for effective negotiations (and what doesn't work so well). http://www.amazon.com/Art-Correspondence-Game-Diplomacy-ebook/dp/B015XAJFM0/ Thanks, Conor

Top 100 GR game. Full press. Anon. WTA.
Hi all, I want to try and play one more game before I take a break again. Some games I played the past months have been great, others a bit disappointing. Overall I still think GR is the best indicator for a noNMR high level of press game, as it was three years ago before I returned to the site. So for my last game before my break I'd like to try and set up a top 100 GR game. Is there anyone out there willing to spar?

Off to work to play Diplomacy
Today I'm in the fantastic position that I'm off to work to play Diplomacy. Or at least, GM it. A local bank is setting up a game for 300 (!) employees, in a trajectory to kickstart discussions about trust and audacity in company culture. I'm really interested: have others ever used Diplomacy in a professional setting? Maybe we're on to something.

So I have permission to use a 3D printer for my boardgame prototype..
Now I need 3 D models to print and use as units. I need tanks, infantry, helicopters, planes, artillery, battleships, factories, territory markers (flags or more creative) and possibly the resources oil, iron, gold and aluminium depicted somehow..
Could I find files for those somewhere? Thoughts?

Bad phrasing. How possible that is..
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
24 Sep 15 UTC
Depends a lot on what the game play is like. How often you move pieces, etc.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
24 Sep 15 UTC
Often. There are up to 6 movement phases per turn, although every unit moves only once per turn. There will also be lots of casualty-moments, so the number of units will change as well..
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
24 Sep 15 UTC
Will stacks often move as a group?
steephie22 (182 D(S))
24 Sep 15 UTC
That's up to the player, but I would say so.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
24 Sep 15 UTC
If the stacks often move together then stacking them should be fine. If you were constantly splitting and merging stacks, that would be a pain.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
24 Sep 15 UTC
Yeah I think they often move together, although you do often need to remove casualties from the stacks.
Merging might happen more often than splitting as far as moving goes, but if there's enough space in the territory, I suppose two stacks of the same unit type don't *need* to be stacked.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
25 Sep 15 UTC
So what would you suggest now?
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))

I'd suggest you release, critique, rewrite, and crudely playtest the rules for multiple iterations.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
25 Sep 15 UTC
Yeah I really don't have anything to add until I see the rules...
steephie22 (182 D(S))
25 Sep 15 UTC
I will. That's not what I meant with the question, but on hindsight, the question is redundant and vague.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
25 Sep 15 UTC
I was still talking about the best way to stack units, to be clear.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
25 Sep 15 UTC
As I've said, it depends on gameplay.
diplomat61 (223 D)

"I was still talking about the best way to stack units, to be clear"

Securely. With lots of stacks, especially if they are more than two or three high, your biggest nightmare is someone jogging the table. Re-assembling them is a pain but the worst case is you are not sure which stack a marker belongs to.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
25 Sep 15 UTC
Maybe I could use the 3 D-printer to create models that can be 'clicked' on top of eachother..
diplomat61 (223 D)
25 Sep 15 UTC
In the long run, yes. But don't get hung up on that for play testing.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
25 Sep 15 UTC
I think you'll find the resolution of your printer is not good enough for that.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
25 Sep 15 UTC
Probably.
diplomat61 (223 D)
25 Sep 15 UTC
Suggest you take a flexible approach: don't require units to be stacked just do it when the size of the territory requires it.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
25 Sep 15 UTC
Yeah that's my thought. I think I'll just get enough models and be sure to have a plan B if it doesn't fit.

Still need to figure out what exact sizes I'll be using..
What's the smallest size that will not be too small to move around?

I'm at roughly 9mm wide for an infantry unit for instance, would that be large enough? Can it get any smaller?
diplomat61 (223 D)
25 Sep 15 UTC
I wouldn't get any smaller, people with fat fingers may find it tricky to move and stack/unstack them with the result that they send pieces shooting across the board. Size is something you can learn about from testing.

Whatever you fix on, suggest that you have the same size for all units to facilitate stacking if necessary (resources might be different to allow easy recognition).

The physical aspects, as much as the rules, are something that testing will help you get right.

I'm having trouble finding an artillery piece.. got the rest excluding resources.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
26 Sep 15 UTC
As for resources, can't think of a nice way to represent aluminium..
diplomat61 (223 D)
26 Sep 15 UTC
What are the other resources?
steephie22 (182 D(S))
26 Sep 15 UTC
Gold, Iron, Oil.
diplomat61 (223 D)
26 Sep 15 UTC
I was wondering about a drinks can but that will be too close to an oil barrel.

I found this picture of aluminium billets:
http://www.constellium.com/var/constellium/storage/images/media/images/aluminium-billets/42574-1-eng-GB/aluminium-billets.png

so would a pile of cylinders work?
steephie22 (182 D(S))
26 Sep 15 UTC
I was thinking about tubes, so either one of those will probably do.. Ironically though, I think it will be hard to find a 3 D model for that because people are just too creative for a simple pile of cilinders..
Don't know how to make one myself, will keep looking and otherwise figure out how to design it myself.

Just go for a triangle
steephie22 (182 D(S))
27 Sep 15 UTC
I suppose I just think too hard occasionally..
steephie22 (182 D(S))
27 Sep 15 UTC
So now I just need to think of a way to find an artillery field gun or something like that which is printed in one piece. I think this may be another case of me thinking too hard but I'm just not finding it.

How does PPSC work?
I thought that in PPSC you always, no matter what, hey points according to the number of SCs you control. But someone in game told me that if you draw, all the points are split among survivors.

Can someone clarify for me?
