1,408 balanced reduced latin squares.
Once a half a year or so ago on here, I mentioned this paper http://condor.depaul.edu/mash/Diplomacy.pdf and how I'd really like to get my hand on some of those squares. Well, Tim McMurry sent me 1,408 reduced latin squares to be used in balanced diplomacy tournaments.

Hi folks, I just wanted to alert the webdip community to my new book. I've finally completed a two-year study of what makes for effective negotiations (and what doesn't work so well). http://www.amazon.com/Art-Correspondence-Game-Diplomacy-ebook/dp/B015XAJFM0/ Thanks, Conor

Top 100 GR game. Full press. Anon. WTA.
Hi all, I want to try and play one more game before I take a break again. Some games I played the past months have been great, others a bit disappointing. Overall I still think GR is the best indicator for a noNMR high level of press game, as it was three years ago before I returned to the site. So for my last game before my break I'd like to try and set up a top 100 GR game. Is there anyone out there willing to spar?

Off to work to play Diplomacy
Today I'm in the fantastic position that I'm off to work to play Diplomacy. Or at least, GM it. A local bank is setting up a game for 300 (!) employees, in a trajectory to kickstart discussions about trust and audacity in company culture. I'm really interested: have others ever used Diplomacy in a professional setting? Maybe we're on to something.

No, you just have a nerd boss :)
It came from the customer - the bank wants to talk about company culture and decided that Dip was a good vehicle. And I for one agree. I think a variant of Dip (smaller, simpler in some way as to take less time) would be an interesting way to do a teambuilding event with a message.

That sounds like fun but I wonder if it will build or destroy trust.

Never used Diplomacy professionally. Used Lego bricks to represent items in a supply chain and various items, including pasta and marshmallows, to build towers.

GM'ing for 300 sounds like a challenge.

And, btw, they came to me because I set up the Dutch Dip Association. So y'all better start organising your own FTF scene - there's money in it! :-)

Length of play is a potential problem. What will you do with those who get knocked out early?

What is "the message" from Diplomacy?

TMOW - if you need someone to help GM, I have nothing on at the moment. Live near Den Haag.
Destroy trust - thats a risk. Today is the prep day, so we discuss which mechanisms are best to kickstart the discussions we want. The day with 300 is in Oct somewhere, and will have several GMs.
@dip61: please PM me your mail address! I might be interested, we don't have a full set of GMs yet.
And: why havent you registered for Dutch Open Championship yet? :-P

Thought about it. Not sure whether I will be free that weekend. Do you prefer late registration + certain attendance or early registration and possible drop-out?

Seems like it will breed a culture of backstabbing, lying, two faced bastards.

So basically good businessmen.
diplomat61 (243 D)
16 Sep 15 UTC
@dyager_nh: being bankers that might be an improvement

@TMOW: suggest getting each player to keep a diary during the game; for each turn log whether they were stabbed/stabber, lied, etc. and how it affects their view of each other player

Come on, guys, you know that's not true. Diplomacy teaches you to combine information you get from press with information you get from moves to infer what other players are planning and to react optimally to those plans. It also teaches you that the best way to influence your opponents' moves is by proposing mutually beneficial deals, stick to your end of the bargain, and to be a reasonable negotiator: sometimes strict but never greedy. If anything, diplomacy teaches you that being a pathological liar gains you some in the short term, but your reputation suffers and with that your whole game.
Octavious (1720 D)

That would be great if it were true :p.
diplomat61 (243 D)

Bas, are you a banker?
Nope, neuroscience graduate student.

Diplomacy doesn't destroy trust. It replaces the phrase "I trust you" by "Based on the board position, our previous interaction and the press I've gotten from you as well as all the other players on the board, I believe that you'll make the move you say you're making". It's replaces blind trust by real trust.

TMOW, I think you should definitely preface the Diplomacy tournament with a small speech about how you need to foster alliances, and how "hardlopers zijn doodlopers".

"setting up a game for 300 (!) employees"

That's another cook.
So, I'm tired but it was a good day. All people here agreed that Diplomacy is awesome, which was a better than expected outcome. But they also agreed that rules and map oddities are probably too complex for large group. So we might end up with no-water variant. Have to flip through vdip what's on offer.

For the Dutch open I prefer early registration and certain attendance :-)

If you're looking for a no-water Classic variant you want Classic Cataclysm - http://vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=84.

What's the difference?

You can only build one type of unit - an amphibious army, which can't convoy. It's essentially the same as making all territories land and disabling fleet builds.
@capt: are there other land-only maps on vdip you can recommend?

@dip61: I'll be posting a cut-off date for registrations soon, probably about two weeks before the day. Feel free to take your time and see. Would be great to drink one beer, if nothing else!
captainmeme (1589 D Mod)
16 Sep 15 UTC
Other than Pure and Cataclysm, all the land-only maps have an alternative to fleet unit type with weird rules (like being weaker than other units, being able to move diagonally (on grid maps), being able to move two provinces in a phase, being unable to capture certain SCs, or some combination of those) which make them more complicated than Classic. Variant creators don't tend to like simplicity.

Pure isn't really what you're looking for, so I think Cataclysm is the best option. I'll have a look to see if I can find any more on other sites.
That'd be great! I'm tending towards an easy to grasp map, land only, with lots of players. I might even make a variant myself - it's been a while, but I think it's probably most effective.
steephie22 (182 D (S))

Any chance you can create a variant with 300 players? It isn't often that you round up 300 players for a live game of Diplomacy..

Chaos version of WWIV v2 would be 265 players - close enough? :)

So I have permission to use a 3D printer for my boardgame prototype..
Now I need 3 D models to print and use as units. I need tanks, infantry, helicopters, planes, artillery, battleships, factories, territory markers (flags or more creative) and possibly the resources oil, iron, gold and aluminium depicted somehow..
Could I find files for those somewhere? Thoughts?

How does PPSC work?
I thought that in PPSC you always, no matter what, hey points according to the number of SCs you control. But someone in game told me that if you draw, all the points are split among survivors.

Can someone clarify for me?
