Any good political blogs?
I had recently completed writing an essay on the threat posed to US hegemony by China. I revised it 7 times and changed it into a better essay. It may have a long way to go, but I wanted to see where it could be considered for publication.

I know not much interest here for hockey but as the lockout dragged on was like who cares. But when I tuned in to sports TV Sunday morning and heard of a tentative deal my Canadian love for the game took over and now am excited for the puck to drop and chase for Lord Stanley's cup to begin.
Go Leafs

What do you mean? Why would I joke about ducks?

Gary Bettman has to go. Fehr has no obligation, except to the players. Bettman is the COMMISSIONER(self-named) of the NHL. He has an obligation to the sport and the league to avoid nonsense like this and we have suffered THREE work stoppages under this clown.

If he is around in 8 years when there is opt out he already has his plan in place lock out players in September and settle some time in January. It's like Ground Hog day the movie everything keeps happening the same as last time.

No -- the air hockey league at the local Elk's club.

I agreed with Bettman on the matter. At the end of the 2012 season, 2 NHL teams (Phoenix and one other) were bailed out by their local cities, since they were bankrupt.

The players were making too much money and so some teams were losing money. Given that the labour contract singed in 2005 had just ended, Bettman decided to propose a new labour deal were players would make 43% of the revenue rather then 57. His goal was to negotiate his way to 50%. Players stood strong at 57% for the next 4 months while Bettman negoitated his way up to 49%.

Bettman was right that the players were overpaid and I supported his cause.

In any case, I am super exicited for the season to start. GO LEAFS, GO WINGS!

However, there is a cadre of owners, with Bettman being their voice, that are adamant that teams exist in low-interest markets. The numbers in PHX and Florida are awful. Salaries have little to do with that. There's just a lack of interest. I am happy that I have witnessed a Stanley Cup in my lifetime (that I can remember). Go Bruins!!!!
Fasces349 (0 DX)

Bruins won 2 years ago...

PHX and Florida don't have the numbers, but with a 14% reduction in player salaries they could break even and possible expand.

I agree that PHX and Florida should be moved north to cities where hockey is actually considered a sport, but until then the Players are eating up too much money.

Ever since the Balsillie incident back in I think 2009 but it might have been a little earlier, nobody has been interested in buying PHX, so they are stuck in PHX for now.

@ Jamie

To be fair to our North American cousins putting hockey on ice did turn what was a dignified, but somewhat boring, sport into a comic spectacle on a par with WWE wrestling. They are missing a trick though. Put American Football on ice and the hockey version will pale into insignificance.

[ice] Hockey is by far the most exciting and entertaining sport on the planet.

That said I like cricket more then baseball and rugby more then gridiron, so its not like I am immune to European sports.

Soccer can be exciting but I rank it as ok. The sport I am most iffy on is Basketball: In my opinion, the first 45 minutes (of a 48 minute NBA game) is the most boring sport you can watch but the last 3 minutes of a close game, then it is one of the most exciting games to watch.

Since at the beginning of a game, no play is important. You miss a basket then who cares you will have another bazillion opportunities, I don't get any adrenaline rush, exciting or rage when my team or their opponent scores or messes up. But come to the end of a game where the score is tight, then plays start to matter, strategy starts becoming important and every shot counts.

That said every sport becomes more exciting at the end of a close game. However, Hockey, Tennis and Rugby are really the only sports that can entertain me from start to finish. Gridiron there are so many breaks in the play I will leave and come back occasionally, cricket while it is exciting, I will rarely watch a full 5 day game and never really got into 20/20 cricket (I have watched ODI cricket from start to finish though).

I was never able to get into soccer, so player names etc. don't mean anything to me. The games I have watched I have enjoyed but don't really have the time time or the will to get into them.

I wonder how many people from LA became Kings fans at the end of the year when LA went on that crazy win streak, going 16-4 in the playoffs. Most impressive play off run I have seen in my lifetime.

In one of my games (I'm playing Turkey) I have an army in Constantinople, a fleet in the Aegean, and a fleet in Bulgaria north coast. Could I use F (Aeg) to convoy Constantinople to Bulgaria, and in a separate move in the same turn move Bulgaria to Constantinople?

Webdip community, please help settle an IRL disagreement
Which of these TV shows is the most psychologically traumatic, and why: 1) Battlestar Galactica (99.75% of humanity wiped out by killer robots), 2) Walking Dead (zombie apocalypse), or 3) Breaking Bad (a handful of people die who (by and large) probably had it coming anyway). Please keep spoilers to a minimum or encrypted with ROT-13 encryption (http://web.forret.com/tools/rot13.asp).

Stop the aid to Africa! It does more harm than good
If the industrial nations really want to help the Africans, they should finally terminate this awful aid. The countries that have collected the most development aid are also the ones that are in the worst shape. Despite the billions that have poured in to Africa, the continent remains poor.

Since I'm not qualified to ask questions about science, I'll go to something I know more about. Really, are airlines this stupid? I (kind of) understand the lack of legroom, I (kind of) understand the side fees that they never tell you about, I (kind of) understand extra bag fees for overweight bags, but can't they just hand you your valuables in one piece?
