Unity of Command
I haven't bought the game yet, but looking at all the stuff around and the demo, this game looks damned fun. Anyone else play it?

Noob Question: Transporting troops
How does one transport troops across the water? thanks!
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))

Example it is London army to Norway.

Army London enter Move > to Norway(via convoy)
Fleet North Sea enter Convoy > to Norway > from London.

Commonly starting out people forget to order the fleet to convoy as well.
Moondust (195 D)
13 Nov 12 UTC
My problem is, there is no option in the combobox for that. Just move, hold, support move, support hold. thanks!
Moondust (195 D)
13 Nov 12 UTC
same with the fleet, only those four options for both the fleet and the army. thanks!

Order the army to move to the new territory and, if prompted, specify "by convoy" or "by sea" (I foget which text is used but you'll only be prompted if both options are possible).

The all the fleets that are needed in the convoy issue "convoy" from "army's current territory" to "army's desired territory". You don't have to specify the path or anything. And you can use redundant fleets to protect it from failing should one of the fleets get dislodged and you can also support hold the convoying fleet to protect it.
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Nov 12 UTC
IF the fleet is on land, it can't convoy, but there should be the option if it is at sea. The army is a normal move just with an addendum of "via convoy" either in the name or as a drowdown added on the fly.

>>IF the fleet is on land, it can't convoy

aha. that must be the issue. :) Once I get a fleet out there, the option will then show in the combobox. Okay thanks!
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Nov 12 UTC
Yep, all combo boxes are position sensitive. They will never show an order that is invalid to issue.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
13 Nov 12 UTC
Not quite never. There are a few corner cases where you can see something funny. But almost never.
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Nov 12 UTC
I have never seen an invalid order be available in a dropdown. Some unlikely convoys? Yes. Some missing valid orders? On world and on ancient med, there are a few bugs. But classic map seems perfect.
I have a screencap at home of an error message I got on the classic map once. I think it somehow let me enter one unit to support itself somewhere, or maybe it let me enter a support order into the territory that unit already occupied, or something like that. If this thread is still alive when I get home tonight, I`ll try to find it.

How old is it? Anything more than a year old has probably long been fixed.

Then again, you've only been here since July. So yeah, put it online and find this post to bring it back to the top. I'd love to see that one.
Moondust, just so you know, you can convoy across several sea areas in a single move, (if there are enough cooperating fleets - and the fleets are at sea).

Say you had A(Lon), F(EnC), F(MAO) you could order A(Lon)->NorthAfrica (via convoy), F(EnC) convoy A(Lon)->NoA, F(MAO) convoy A(Lon)-NoA. As long as NoA isn't successfully defended and neither of the fleets is dislodged then the convoy move succeeds.

An unsuccessful attack on a convoying fleet will *not* disrupt the convoy.

The fleets and the army do not have to belong to the same player. One or more allies can join forces to ensure the convoy works. IIRC the longest possible convoy is A(StP)->Con, but you need a lot of cooperating fleets for that to work.

Hmmm. Very interesting. thanks!

So what's the story about the ominous involuntary convoy? I've seen it mentioned in a few places but have never come across a full explanation.
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Nov 12 UTC
It isn't an issue here any more. Because the army can specify how to travel, it will never be convoyed if it doesn't want to be. DATC 6.F.13 passes on the site and it is all about the unwanted convoy. So have no fear here.

Opps, sorry 6.G.2...

6.G.2. TEST CASE, KIDNAPPING AN ARMY
Germany promised England to support to dislodge the Russian fleet in Sweden and it promised Russia to support to dislodge the English army in Norway. Instead, the joking German orders a convoy.

England:
A Norway - Sweden

Russia:
F Sweden - Norway

Germany:
F Skagerrak Convoys A Norway - Sweden

See issue 4.A.3.

When the 1982/2000 rulebook is used (which I prefer), England has no intent to swap and it is just a head to head battle were both units will fail to move. When explicit adjacent convoying is used (DPTG), the English move is not a convoy and again it just a head to head battle were both units will fail to move. In all other interpretations, the army in Norway will be convoyed and swap its place with the fleet in Sweden.

Draug, there are two cases I know of.

First, a fleet in a sea space can support move an army in an attack on a location that would require a convoy from that fleet. But I think that barely fits in the definition of "invalid" if it does at all.

Example, F Baltic can be ordered to support move Sweden to Livonia with no other fleets around to do the convoy.

The other one I'm not exactly positive on. It has something to do with a fleet on a coast (of StPete, Spain, or Bulgaria) being able to support move to the territory it is in or something funny like that.
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Nov 12 UTC
The first is iffy as the convoy can be ordered so therefore the support can be ordered. The system would have to do a level.of checking even further to see if the fleet were the only way to complete the convoy before removing the "from" that requires its convoy order.

The second if it still exists is a bug then obviously.
Alas, I seem to have deleted all of the pictures on my hard drive at some point (seriously -- I don't even remember doing this!). I am not sure what order I tried to enter, but it involved units in Mar, GoL, and either West Med or Spain. When I entered the order, the screen actually gave me a database error message right below the map IIRC.
Ah, I found it on another hard drive. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/7/errorgv.png/

I have a fleet in Spain(sc), and it lets me enter Spa S Spa - MAO.

I'm so confused. Again. I now have permission to convoy my army. But if I just tell it to convoy, that doesn't mean that it actually will unless there's a ship there, right? What all has to transpire for me to successfully go to the place in the combobox by convoy? I don't even have any ships off land. Although another player has a ship out there.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@Moondust

In order to convoy successfully, 2 things must happen.

1) The army must be order to move to a territory "via convoy".
2) Any and all fleets that will be preforming the convoy must be ordered to convoy from the starting location to the ending location.

If you do that, everything else should take care of itself.
Moondust (195 D)
14 Nov 12 UTC
Okay, so other people / troops must be in on it. What if you convoy and they're not. You just stay put? thanks!
Alderian (2425 D(S))
14 Nov 12 UTC
Yes.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
14 Nov 12 UTC
Note, the reason that your army shows as being able to convoy is because it could be convoyed. It doesn't know whether or not the foreign fleet next to the army is friend or foe. So it gives you the opportunity.

It seems to me that in this game Persia and Greece are controlled by the same person/close friends, despite it being a gunboat game they are cooperating... not attacking each other, AT ALL, and supporting holds on each other. It is very suspicious.

Sad...she led a great life, and did a lot to look after Eliot's legacy and letters after he died in 1965, and 86 is a great, full life...but it's still sad to know such a long-standing link to the greatest poet and critic in the English language of the last century (and a hero of mine nearly on par with Shakespeare) is gone.

Things that sound so good, that you ignore facts in opposition
The election threads about the Repubs convincing themselves that Romney would win even though the numbers were against them got me thinking of this. List stuff that people love to spout and believe because it makes them feel good about their choices.
