Time to shamelessly discuss another game here! Mute this thread if you hate chess and/or shamelessness, or me showing off a victory, or all three!

I won this game, but I think I made some mistakes. I’m not sure where they are, who’s interested? Is it a good idea to take the pawn in the center with my knight? Is sacrificing the bishop to consume the knight’s position and take the other knight a good idea?

20 should read N, not K

Well played. White clearly didn't know the Smith-Morra, though.
I just played through the game briefly, and I know I had some brilliant insightful questions. But now I've forgotten :(.
Where do you play? Was this live or on the internet?
redhouse1938 (429 D)
25 Mar 12 UTC
No this was old-fashioned live! And I didn't know Smith-Morra either, your mentioning it is the first time I heard of it. Time to wiki what I did! :-)

Well it's alright if you don't know it! (Unless you're a closet GM). White shouldn't have played it if he didn't know the basic ideas, though. Bishops belong on c4 and f4/d3, and he should have countered the pin with Nd2. I've been dabbling with that variation as white lately -- maybe not technically sound but loads of fun against people who don't know what they're doing and let you push to e5 before moving their d-pawn.

You countered in the center very well, and you were probably better after ...d5. (IMHO). Very well handled.

I remembered one of my questions: why a) Ba5 after a3? b) Why Bc7? I thought the idea of a6 was to prepare for Qc7. And the bishop on the a7-g1 diagonal looks strong.

Was this like, a competitive game?

Okay... first results are in:
d5 I agree was pretty painful, thanks for that! :-)
a) Isn't that the best? By provoking b4 I can move Bc7, which double threatens his most aggressive pawn... What would you have done?
Definitely looks like an interesting game. Though, I have to disagree that after 18. (here white’s already screwed to a point of no return IMO lol). Black has the advantage but it is far from over. I'll put it in my chess program later tonight if I have time and let you know what it says.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
25 Mar 12 UTC
Ah I'm starting to see what you mean... Interesting indeed. Actually one of the many reasons was that I believed that at some point, I'd be playing Qb8 to add an additional attack on the pawn.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
25 Mar 12 UTC
@Caballo of course "assuming black doesn't make errors". I'd be very interested in your pc analysis as well.
@jmeyersd your questions are very stimulating, they will be the subject of ongoing research :-)

I'm not saying that Ba5 was necessarily a bad move, but an alternative might have been Bc4. I thought that your move a6 was to prepare for Qc7, which seems the strongest square for the queen. The bishop on the a7-g1 diagonal would have been very strong, so you would have had 2 strong pieces instead of just the one. This also would prepare to bring the rooks to the c & d files.

But heck, you're probably a better player than me. And what you did seemed to work fine.

Anyone fancy a nice friendly game here?
White's 32 move seems odd to me even without the computer analysis I think he should have played Re1.
Is there any way you can attempt to reconstruct moves 32-38 from memory? as etc etc doesn't tell me much though I as previous stated I do agree that white is sort of lost after 32 Nf6+
jmeyersd (4240 D)
25 Mar 12 UTC
I agree about Re1 being better, but white is still far worse in that position.
This is what I get after looking at the game with Rybka.

6. Qd4! forces black to trade the bishop with already weakened dark squares.
14 Rab1 was a bad move. This show white has no plan (and doesn't understand what gambits are about): Rac1, Rfd1 or a4 were better.
16 Bf6 !? Nice computer move. Analysis is unclear, but white certainly has chances.
17 Bxe7? Trying to be fancy, but essentially this gives the entire game away. White has compensation after simple Qxd3. In any case, 17...f6 is met by 18 Bxf6!
22...0-0 You still had one rook doing nothing. Activate it!
23... Bf4? seems pointless. Why trade your bishop pair away? Why not Be5? or Bxh2+
31... Bd3 Nice trick, but would you have won without it? One pawn should be enough, but the technique is still tricky. Try to beat your computer from that position.
@17 Bxe7? Trying to be fancy, but essentially this gives the entire game away. White has compensation after simple Qxd3.

This was another thing that I noticed...
Also, whites 31 moves seems to lose him about a 1 point in the analysis... was he in time trouble at this point?
Also, why 12...b5? It closes the position down, but white's b5 wasn't a real threat anymore. Isn't this wasting time when you could've gone 12...Ng6? 'cause that's What your entire set-up is about.

Can someone explain why 7...d5 is such a good move? I don't see anything wrong with Nbc6.
At move 17, he probably wanted to avoid 17...f6. Likely didn't see (or didn't dare Bxf6). Without that move, it's not enough.

At move 31, he simply blundered. Maybe time-trouble, or he was just worn out by a long game.
@ 7 ... d5 I think the common (better) moves from this position are 0-0 and Nbc6. Though my computer has d5 as almost the same so it's probably just preference there.
@ Is sacrificing the bishop to consume the knight’s position and take the other knight a good idea?

If you are referring to blacks 23 move then yes sacrificing is good but not with Bf4 the correct sacrifice would be Bxh2+

Anyone fancy a crude correspondence game here?
How crude are you talking?
redhouse1938 (429 D)
27 Mar 12 UTC
Anyways, here's how it ended:
33. Nd7-Rd8
34. Rd1-RxN
35. Kg3-Bb5
36. RxR-BxR
37. Rf4-Rf6
38. g3-e5+
White resigns

So I discussed and replayed this game yesterday, we came to the conclusion that my opponent made several mistakes. Just like some people here said, Tab1 is - IMO - the gravest one. It does nothing and loses precious momentum. Indeed, as @basvanopheusden said, the guy had no plan here (he actually made the same comment when we were analyzing together later about that very move).

re: 6. 6Qd4!
Indeed, that would justify the gambit.

Re: 23 ...Bf5, it's absolutely true what both @bas and @Caballo said, it's stupid I didn't even consider that. The reason I trade the bishop is that I believe the knight's position after 24. Nxf4 is extremely weak, he'll have to get that knight back again to activate it (which he does at some point).
I don't really understand that. The knights on a4 and e2 were both not optimally placed. They could only really go to c3/c5, blocking the rook. At f4, the knight is not worse than at e2 I would say. It can go d3-e5, or d3-c5, or Nh5 can be inconvenient too. In any case, no reason to warrant giving up the bishop pair so easily.

All in all, it's a decent game. You played a solid set-up, and your opponent didn't know how to counter your strategy. He had to play very actively and find cute tricks. He didn't, so he was forced onto the defense, and his defense skills weren't that good (which is probably why he played the Morra in the first place).

new stats in the works
I have a goal to finish stats that look at the following: a solo layout for each power that looks at the centers owned by each country and the frequency of control, i will also separate WA and PPSC win/draw stats, the number of centers a country needs to feel secure in the idea that it has likely minimized the likelihood it will be eliminated, and an update on my prior work. important about 40% done and hope to have it done by the end of the semester.
