Going against the best team in the NFL and holding them to only one touchdown. Rodgers can run for 1st downs all day, since we love tackling him with big hits.

Sick of the Liars!
Ok, so I've just inflamed half a dozen trolls who are reading this this morning. Going to enjoy hearing from them all day. But it isn't the trolls that have me down. It is the liars!

Great American Political Quotes
Europe is so different than America that European political philosophy has little relevance in the United States. (2012 should keep it that way as well).
I dedicate this thread to American political quotes.

troubador's "Newbie question"
I understand why the mods locked the thread, but it's still possible to answer the user's question without violating site rules. I'm not going to refer to the game in question, or even link to it.

As Victorious was saying, players in gunboat manage to coordinate moves by experience. Players who have a lot of games under their belts can often determine what the most likely move is, and order support to match their expectations. It doesn't always work out, of course.

Another thing is that support orders can be used to indicate a peaceful overture, or a tactical suggestion. The "support hold" order is often used to indicate a desire for an alliance. The "support move" order can be given to a foreign unit to suggest a move for a subsequent turn, and perhaps a promise to repeat that support.

See this article for a 1995 take on communication in no-press games:

Very true ibadibam, very true... or, just hear me out... they could be cheating!!! All cooperation in a Gunboat must be cheating!!!

(Just an ironic joke! Please no reminders that cheating accusations should not be posted in the forum.)

Although the core of the article is indeed sound, webDip doesn't offer such flexibility in writing orders that older forms of play allowed so some unacquianted in gunboat might extract useless examples from it. Personally, I'm content with the foolproof order system we have here but after reading the article, I can see that a more liberal approach would have some benefits in gunboats. Although working with limited instruments is a part of gunboat's charm for me and I'm afraid others would profit from more possibilities more than I would ;)

My golden rule for gunboats is: give others the benefit of doubt. Don't underestimate the opponents, assume that they are at least as competent as you are. While contemplating orders, try to imagine what the others will think of them, whether they will get the message you're trying to convey. Be rational in communicating moves. It is much easier to decypher a move that is fundamentally sound. A predictable ally is an asset. An unpredictable ally might be more dangerous than a predictable enemy so if you often order unclear moves, you won't make it far. On the other hand, don't be afraid to pretend you're irrational on the offense. There will be moves where you have to outguess the opposition and be sure he'll try to see a pattern in your moves - if he can't see one or, even better, he thinks he knows it, you have the upper hand.

"Just dont gunboat"... because anytime players cooperate in a gunboat, they're cheating!!!!

(Again, just an ironic joke! Please no reminders that cheating accusations should not be posted in the forum.)

Not to mention it would make it a lot easier to write deliberate misorders.

It's actually not ironic at all, and please no cheating accusations in the forum. (not a reminder since it's my first time mentioning it in this thread)

"Not to mention it would make it a lot easier to write deliberate misorders."

Yes, both diplomacy and playing dumb would be much easier.

@moscowitz - Joking or not, this suggest you are bitter about something and is a veiled accusation of whatever it is you are bitter about. It's best you just stop before you piss of abgemacht or one of the other mods and they silence you.
moskowitz (160 D)
16 Jan 12 UTC
I'm not bitter about anything. :-)

I play gunboats almost exclusively and I just think it's funny how many folks will immediately begin ranting about cheating and collusion just because two nations in a gunboat managed to support each other once or twice. I'll bet abgemacht and the other mods understand that.

Anyway, I'll drop it if it's making people uncomfortable. I thought I was being funny; I don't want to be annoying.

Check out this guy - Machiavelli is right
gameID=77832

In a 5 minute live game, Turkey, Russia, and England don't show up. I (playing France) move immediately to Cancel and Austria, some guy named Octopus_seppuku, refuses and quite obviously wins due to the Balkans, Turkey and Russia being uncontested. I just find that very poor sportsmanship and not in the spirit of the game. I guess he needed to pad his rating or something. How utterly base and sad.

Arizona Bans Mexican/Native-American Texts From Classes, Including...Shakespeare?!
http://www.salon.com/2012/01/13/whos_afraid_of_the_tempest/singleton/
In a meeting this week, administrators informed Mexican-American studies teachers to stay away from any units where “race, ethnicity and oppression are central themes,” including the teaching of Shakespeare’s classic ["The Tempest"] in Mexican-American literature courses.
1. What is up with Arizona's Latino-phobia, and 2. Really...Shakespeare banned as Latino Lit? O.O

Newbie question
I'm new to the site and am looking at "Bye, Points" active game. Says no in game messaging, anomymous players. Yet I see Italy supporting Austria and another cooperation later in the game. How does this happen? Doen't look like a lucky guess to me

Issues with the site
I had a misorder last night that I'd confirmed about 5 times and now I can see all of TC's threads even though he's muted. Anyone have any idea how I can fix this since I'm assuming this is a problem with my browser and not with the site?

It Happened in 1912...Will Another GOP 7-10 Split Help Obama Win like Wilson in 1912?
Everyone knows the story--William Howard Taft got the GOP nomination in 1912 (more due to Taft's being friends and more laissez-faire than actual popularity in regards to the powers that be than TR) but Teddy Roosevelt still had so much solo-name-starpower he became the most successful 3rd party candidate ever...but BOTH LOST to some fellow the Democrats ran by the name of Woodrow Wilson, due in large part to a split GOP vote. Do you think Romney/RP/Obama=Roosevelt/Taft/Wilson, 2012=1912?
