goondip has them and I like them. But it should be something you opt in for. And possibly opt in separately for new messages versus phase changes and such. But with as many games as we've got here, I could see that being a potential server load issue.

An RSS feed of the Notices on the home page would work as well.

I have been in lots of games at the same time. Emails would be extreme. I think an RSS feed would be great.

RSS, e-mail and Facebook notifications are planned for the future (this is what the Home page notices were designed for originally), but it'll take a while to do

Honestly, I don't think I'd want a bunch of diplomacy stuff flooding my inbox. I've never understood why people have such a hard time just checking the site...

I developed wdNotifier as a WinXP taskbar icon that changes when there is a phase change or new message, it helped me do my job as I was constantly checking on my games otherwise :-)

Any future e-mail and Facebook system will be non-intrusive and remove yourself from, no-one likes to be spammed unnecessarily. There may be algorithms that could figure out the people who visit the site on a regular basis anyway and those that need prodding, or specifically prod those who are taking longer than usual to get back to games, etc, or it may just be a simple opt-in/opt-out system, but either way the end result will try to be helpful above all else

Like Alderian said, I've been using email updates on goondip. I'd say one out of every 30 or so members complains about not being able to turn it off. I've found, however, that mandatory email notifications reduce the number of NMRs, which is more beneficial to the community as a whole. You can always set up a filter in your inbox if you don't want to see them.

Although I probably will waive to public pressure and do opt-*out* for emails when I get a chance.

@Gallando - I downloaded your program, and it is pretty awesome :-) Thanks! One thing to note - if you are using Windows Vista, you'll have to change the Compatibility Mode to Windows XP for it to work.

I say default settings would have an email when there is less than 20% time left in a game and you don't have an order in. That'll prevent a TON of NRMs/CDs and help with retaining players. Of course, there should be an opt-out function as well.

I started on code that does email messages 8.33% before the deadline (which gives 1 hour in a 12-hour game, and 2 hours in a 24-hour game), so long as the deadlines are over 2 hours, and the user has not submitted orders.

my preference
-Opt-in emails for phase changes.
-Mandatory emails for NRM/CDing players.

I like orathaic's preferences but would add an option for receiving press in your inbox, but make it independent of the phase change option (so you could opt for phase changes without getting all your press that way).

Another player (ninjapirate?) developed a gadget which monitors your games - you can see how much time left until the end of phase etc. It's quite good too.
