Why play if you dont play to win?
Message sent was essentially. Hey we can still stop Russia from a solo victory if we team up now.
Message recieved. Sorry am really tired of this game would rather it just end.
Do other peoples games usually end by 1905 every year or what? I mean my favorite part is te end game where the three of four players who ave really worked their tails off, makeing deals and wth perfectly timed stabs are left to fight it out to the end or agree to a draw.

i would say that getting tired of a game by 1905 seems a bit silly. i can definitely see dip-fatigue affecting willingness to fight on, i know i've felt it before, but basically giving up in 1905 seems a bit sad. and i agree, the end game is an important and fun part of the game.

I just finished an anonymous public press where three of us were left, two wanted a draw, and the thris (the bigger of us) decided he wanted to fight on. So we fought on for a bit and we all enjoyed it. Then the big guy decided a draw was fine and threw in his vote and we drew the game. But all three of us relished either solution. No one was all "I'm bored and want it to end" in it. I don't get that approach, especially not that early in a game.

Perhaps the person has joined too many games so is having a hard time caring about a game he isn't doing well in. Stupid and irritating, but a possible reason.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

maybe by 1931, depending on whether the game has gotten stale yet...

My longest game was 1925. It is all part of the instant gratification mindset that so many have been brought up with that. If you do not want to play the game thru to the end, please do not join.

there are a lot of dumb players honestly... i'm in an anonymous gunboat game right now where one freaking player is a COMPLETE idiot (or jackass) there is someoine on the verge of getting a solo, and this fool keeps sniping dots from the remaining players that can stop him... its a WTA game, so I dont know what the hell he hopes to achieve...

i wish it was at least global chat so I could ream him out in public... but I cant waitt for the game to be over so I know who this complete idiot is.

I actually think that, if Diplomacy was played by 7 equal players, it would result in a draw every time.

I suggest you join the leagues - most games end in draws there as no-one can afford one player to take all 12 D from a game.
djbent (2572 D(S))
29 Sep 09 UTC
@babak - that sounds infuriating. now if it was a game with press, it would be a different story... good manipulation on the part of the one going for the solo. but i suppose it might not change things for the one who is sniping...

@polar bear - congrats on doing so well in the leagues, and i agree with your point. why don't you join our game of top 25 ghost rating folks - it's anonymous, and should be a lot of fun.

Is there a list of leagues somewhere? Also are there leagues for less experienced players as well?

go to this thread. It is explained there how the leagues work.

@Babak - is it a 4-way, almost 3-way anon gunboat and Russia is sniping away the dots? I think I know the game and I suspect you are England. In fact, as pissed off as you sound (and based on login times), you would be England.
Draugnar (0 DX)
29 Sep 09 UTC
After looking at the current anon gunboats, I'm certain of the game and that you are England. You have to give Russia credit for coming back from just 2 SCs to 8 of them.

@Draugnar - There is no policy about not talking of current games on the forum?

Draugnar (0 DX)

I didn't bring it up, and just because I'm following the game, doesn't mean I'm in it. I'm not giving advice and am actually kind of disappointed Babak brought it up as it made it so easy to figure out who he was and what game it was. I follow the anon gunboats cause they are fun to watch.
Babak (26982 D(B))
29 Sep 09 UTC
are you serious? people actually follow games? wow. and I didnt think anyone would go looking for the game... lol.

his come-back IS impressive, but the rest of his game deserves the harshest critique... and the game is basically over thanks to his play...
Babak (26982 D(B))
29 Sep 09 UTC
how the hell did you figure that out by the way? I did not give away any real indicators... well done Draug. just dont post the game ID... i'm sure not everyone can figure it all out the way you did.

well, unless of course you are Russia.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Sep 09 UTC
As I said, I like to watch the gunboats, so had an idea which one of the five or six active ones it might be (only one at that stage really), then looked at your last visit time and the time of England and they were in agreement where as Italy hadn't been on for quite some time. I assumed you weren't Russia as he was who you were complaining about and also figured you weren't France as he is the potential winner if Russia can't bring the hammer down on him. In Russia's defense, he can't sit back and do nothing and that meant going through you or Turkey to get a front against France. He has that now, so we'll see what he does from this point forward.
rdrivera2005 (3533 D(G))

I really like to see some EOG statement for gunboat games....
Babak (26982 D(B))
30 Sep 09 UTC
no way Draug... if he was a good player, he would have built a few fleets up north to help stop France up north... and moved his armies in themiddle to challange him in the Mun/Ber area... instead he sent units south to distract Italy and he put armies in swe and nwy...

he could have elimianted the weak england if he felt like it, thats not the thing, but he should have had the forsight to stop France...

at this point, its a French win no matter what... but Russia is a either a major A** or just a very very very poor player. one of the two. so i'm very curious who it is.
Babak (26982 D(B))
30 Sep 09 UTC
great gum-shoe work by the way... i'm actually quite impressed that you figured all that out.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
30 Sep 09 UTC
Any chance the global chat channel opens up after a no press game ends? Would be nice for EOG statements, or at least so you can post a link to a forum EOG statement thread.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Sep 09 UTC
I suspect he was a bit nearsighted and just desperate to get back in the game. When Italy backed off to deal with France, he saw the opportunity to at least grow back and make a run for it. It could end up being a race to 18 or a three way draw if he and Italy can hold France to just the two remaining English SCs.

But we should really stop talking about an ongoing game, especially a gunboat where the other players (including Russia) might see this and alter their game play accoridngly.

Do we really need seven countries to start a game?
What ever happened to having some civil disorder countries if a game started with less than seven people? My four friends and I played several games together like that (So as not to give ourselves unfair advantages against two outsiders), but now we can't. Is there some option that could be made to allow a game to start without seven people?

Thanks!

metagaming?
say we have player A and player B. they are initally in one game together. player A goes and joins a new game, then player B joins the same game. so now, although it was not player A's fault, any interations between the players carries over to the second game. anything that could be done to prevent this in the future?

I love a good debate, so here's another topic. Nuclear weapons - should we keep them? Should we get rid of them? Should we build even more? Should other countries be allowed to have them?

Casual #x
I doubt I'm the only one, but I'm not fussed about gaining points, or experimenting with rule variants, etc. It's for this reason I keep creating games with the lowest possible pot, and standard rules.
The new "Casual #x" games follow this trend. They're no different, I just cba to come up with a new name each time.
They are equally competitive, challenging, or fun. I just like games that are accessible to newbies and don't require me to put up an excessive stake.

bug regarding clock/phase rollover
I mentioned my suspicions on this before but it was confirmed last night in the live game I played. Phases are rolling over when they still have 3-4 minutes left on the clock. This can be especially damaging in a live game when time is a precious commodity!!

Are other people getting this? When a game is paused, instead of saying "paused" it says "deadline: now." It's a minor thing, but would probably be good to fix. Thanks!
