so i finally saw the movie...and i have to say, there were a lot of things about the movie that really bugged me. but i was a big fan of the book, so thats expected. opinions on it, anybody?
Chrispminis (916 D)
24 Jul 09 UTC
I don't believe you. If you were a "big fan" of the "book", you would have already seen the movie. And by a lot of things, I think you mean blue dick.
djbent (2572 D(S))

i was a big fan of the book and haven't seen the movie. i figure it can't be much good, so i haven't bothered. some friends saw it high and couldn't stop laughing about the blue dick. didn't exactly inspire me to see it!
iMurk789 (100 D)
24 Jul 09 UTC
first off, i really despised how much emphasis was put on violence, blood and gore. i definitely thought it was NOT that important in the book, and it seemed very over the top in the movie. a great example was when rorschach kills the serial killer, the book was so much better at that part...the violence was unnecessary, and less powerful. i also didnt like how the ending involved framing dr manhattan. finally, they left out rorschachs awesome atheism monoluge(?) to the psychiatrist. i realize it definitely not would have flown well with the public, but it was still one of my favorite parts of the book.
iMurk789 (100 D)
24 Jul 09 UTC
umm, im 16. unless someone else took me, i couldnt get in. not to mention i only read the book after the movie had already come out. i honestly did not notice the blue dick...wasnt exactly looking for it.

book, graphic novel, whatever.

I read the book and didn't see the movie. I thought the book sucked and will see the movie eventually and hope it's better.

I thought the book sucked because of the ending.

For real??? All of that reading for an insanely unbelievable ending like that? Transporting aliens to explode on transport over New York act as a massive nuke was the giant 'conspiracy'?

It's like they put all this work into the graphic novel and couldn't decide on an ending, and then agreed on the stupidest thing they could think of.
ag7433 (927 D(S))
24 Jul 09 UTC
NOTE: I thought the book before the ending was great.
Chrispminis (916 D)
24 Jul 09 UTC
ag7433, the ending isn't really about the plot or the feasibility. It really just acts as an incidence to serve as an example for a moral dilemma. All of the characters were pretty much human representations of different ethical ideologies and philosophies.
Fbgav (206 D)
24 Jul 09 UTC
dont compare "the movie" to "the book" no matter how much you liked either one, they are two completely different forms of medium they convey messages different ways. They should only be regarded as framework for one another and never meant to compete against eachother.
tilMletokill (100 D)

never read the book but i have to say the movie was great except the ending when (spoiler Alert!!!!!!!) Dr. Manahtan kills rorschach i mean come on that guy was freaking amazing.........the best line in the movie was when he burns the prisoner and tells the others (Im not locked in here with you, your locked in here with me!!!!!!!!!!!!) (it went something like that)
hellalt (24 D)
24 Jul 09 UTC
I have never read the book, neither will I now that i watched the movie first.
This movie was extraordinarily ludicrous.
There was a bunch of guys pretending to be super heroes but they just sucked.
What we really laughed at was the super heroes motives.
It seems they were focused exclusively at sex.
The blue guy was able to bend time and space yet he couldn't satisfy his girlfriend (there is a scene where he multiplies into 5 clones, uses 4 of them to have sex with her but leaves 1 into the lab to continue working on saving the world, yet she founds out and make a scene about not getting f**ked by the 5th one...)
His girlfriend abandons him for another so called super hero, a batman imitation without any skills, who tries to have sex with her but fails to get an erection until he wears his magical robe (which probably provides him with an electromagnetic hard on or something).
The blue guy feels extremely sad and decided to stop his research, leave the world to it's fate and go to cry alone in some planet in another cellar system...
In the end the world gets saved by a gay super hero, who is the only one who prefers using his upper head...
the only cool character is the psychopathic lunatic poet with the altering face mask.
I would rate this movie with 1 out of 5 just because i couldn't stop laughing.
I suppose you can consider it a great B movie (like meatballs or something)
ag7433 (927 D(S))
24 Jul 09 UTC
@Chris: I get that part. But couldn't they have chosen something that flowed a bit better and didn't distract from the moral dilemma? It was like the book dumbed down a few more notches to cater to a 10 year olds.

@hellalt: I agree.

And I think the best part of the book was reading through the clilps of the dead pirate boat (forgot the name) and the castaway who was trying to get back to his family and him thinking they were next and/or being taken.

Not sure if that was in the movie or not.
iMurk789 (100 D)

iMurk789 (100 D)
25 Jul 09 UTC
@hellalt- i dont know if that was supposed to be funny or what, but i have to say i completely disagree
Chrispminis (916 D)
25 Jul 09 UTC
tilMletokill, Dr. Manhattan had to kill Rorschact because Rorschact represented an uncompromising categorical imperative, in terms of ethical philosophy. Dr. Manhattan held a more utilitarian view and was willing to kill him to save the lives of countless others. I thought the ending made Rorschact even more badass because he knew he would not be allowed to live, but he was willing to die for his beliefs. He would not have been the same if he survived.

hellalt, clearly you were expecting an escapist thriller about superheroes. Watchmen was written with the idea of portraying more realistic and human superheroes. They aren't supposed to be the classic indestructible superman because it was supposed to be a pretty obvious ethical parable as well as a critique of superheroes in general. It's one of the more easier to analyze graphic novels and films because it's so obvious what they're trying to get across. I mean, every single monologue is like a direct explanation of the themes involved. Of course the superheroes had sex problems, because they were still human, and as Dr. Manhattan pointed out to Ozymandias, a human is but a tiny speck in the universe and a superman is no more significant than a superant.

ag7433, I thought it was pretty clear. Can you think of a less complicated way to convince all of the Earth that they were under attack and needed to unite against a common enemy?
ag7433 (927 D(S))
25 Jul 09 UTC
@Chris: Less complicated than finding a psychic, killing her, transferring her mind into an alien, and then transporting the alien (while knowing that transporting will cause the subject to explode)? Surely you're joking.
ag7433 (927 D(S))
25 Jul 09 UTC
What happened to good ol' fashioned crop circles?
Chrispminis (916 D)
25 Jul 09 UTC
Haven't you noticed? Nobody's paying much attention to crop circles any more, and keeps on fighting!

I have to admit, I haven't read the graphic novel (I never bother looking at the pictures), so I only knew the basic plot outline, and I've seen the movie. What you describe does seem genuinely convoluted. I concede. =P
ag7433 (927 D(S))
25 Jul 09 UTC
I literall threw the book at the wall when I read that the transplanted psychic mind into an alien to explode upon transportation and cause nuke-like mindblowing on NYC.

All that reading, for that?
wydend (0 DX)
25 Jul 09 UTC
I'm with ag7433 on this one. I thought that the ending of the book could of been much better. I actually liked the ending in the movie better, and they were still able to present most of the moral dilemmas that the book was centered around.

different strokes, different strokes, i loved the movie. i agree crisp, if people like flashy action drive superhero flicks then this isnt the move for you. this movie is like Mahabharata meets Xmen meets what a real super hero would be like.
hellalt (24 D)
25 Jul 09 UTC
"Watchmen was written with the idea of portraying more realistic and human superheroes"
Ok, I can understand that.
But in this case we' re talking about a parody!
Does "realistic" and "human" equals "horny" and "jackass"?
iMurk789 (100 D)
25 Jul 09 UTC
i liked the book ending a lot more. it may have been a little far-fetched, but why would dr manhattan attack earth? and if you remember correctly, he leaves our solar system at the end. the alien threat is much more unknown.
I loved the movie.
Chrispminis (916 D)
25 Jul 09 UTC
hellalt, there's a difference between a parody and a critique. The superheroes weren't any hornier than a normal human, which is the point. They all have the same flaws as other humans, but they're better at kicking ass.
Toby Bartels (361 D)
25 Jul 09 UTC
I loved the book, so why should I pay outrageous prices (for a theatre screening or a DVD) to see a movie that is not going to be as good? However, once it's available for rental in my area, then I'll see it.

I agree that the space squid is pretty stupid; I can understand why Snyder changed it. I'll reserve judgement on whether his ending is better until I see it, but I wouldn't be surprised. Overall, however, the book is still the best mainstream comic book of all time!
iMurk789 (100 D)
25 Jul 09 UTC
@toby- i agree, thats why i didnt watch it until my bro brought me a burned copy of it. and yeah it is a pretty damn good comic.

@hellalt - You're clearly very young, if you didn't get that scene. She wasn't upset that she wanted the 5th clone, she was A) freaked out at the bizarreness of the situation and B) pissed because he wasn't give her his full attention. Some day you'll be watching your favorite sporting event and your wife/girlfriend/partner will be feeling needy. Then you'll see that same reaction.

Unless you're gay, in which case your partner will probably understand and be watching the same event. Lucky gay guys :-)
hellalt (24 D)
26 Jul 09 UTC
I'm not that young. Yet I can't understand this female "full attention" need. I know there are a lot of them out there demanding it but when i get this impression i prefer not providing even the slightest attention. Actually I'd rather become gay than having to provide "full attention". ffs, I don't think a man should be such a p***y slave like Mr Manhattan...
btw how could she be both freak out by being gangbanged by one guy and his clone and at the same time annoyed that she's not getting more gangbanged? oh and something else. did she have any super powers at all? i mean other than the ability to be getting gangbanged...
hellalt (24 D)
26 Jul 09 UTC
In a nutshell i don't think you can't even consider them superheroes with flaws. They are just faulty humans. I'd rather watch Charles Bronson eliminate them with a machine gun that spending time crying with their erotic failures.
iMurk789 (100 D)
26 Jul 09 UTC
@hellalt- youd rather become gay than provide full attention? and you dont understand how females could demand it?

honestly?
iMurk789 (100 D)

thats very questionable.

that's not questionable, that's immature.

Chrispminis (916 D)

hellalt, the idea is that all humans are faulty... Clearly you'd be better off watching Michael Bay movies... and good luck in the future with your romantic career.
Toby Bartels (361 D)

@hellalt

No, none of them have superpowers except Dr Manhattan. That's deliberate.

An interesting look at current and the future of robotics in war. Not so much about the tech as the moral, political, social, legal, chain of command, fighter and civilian morale implications. A must read for anyone interested in the future of war and peace. If you have read the book what are your thoughts.

Hi there, We're on game 11444 which has been paused for ages since we were all on holiday. Now we're back, we can't unpause - everyone's voted to unpause but it also seems stuck. Is there a delay built in or are we doing something wrong?

how do you disband fleets and armies that you have already created?
I was under the perhaps mistaken impression from reading the rulebook that you could disband your own units at any time (and then build them again at the end of fall, if you control enough supply centers, as usual). is this true, and if so, how do i do it?

Error, not importent but may cause problems
If you look at the points won for an individual for past games the number is way off. In one of my past games it shows I won 900 or so points for my win. As I have never been above 250 D this is not correct. This is so for all of my past wins. As I said in the title, not a big problem but it could cause some confusion.
