Question on Winnings for Points Per Supply Center
There is a point of contention between another player and I that I am seeking to resolve. He says that when winning a PPSC game (18+ SC) you only get the 18 SC amount of points. I claim that you get the proportion of points equal to the number of centers claimed. Who is right?

EOG: New Game Three Way draw G17 F7 T10
I took this game over in the Winter of 1901 when Germany had not moved for two complete seasons. The French had an army in Belgium the English a fleet in Holland,
Russia had 7 with Norway,Sweden, Rumania and had built a fleet in the north coast,
Italy had screwed up his orders and had not gotten any builds while Austria and Turkey were intermingled diplomatically and about to make a change in direction.
My goal in the game was to see if I could make something of this wild situation and at the same time learn something about the site.
In 02 I was able to talk the English out of Holland as he started on his game long war with England with his buddy in Italy continuing in the Jihad. Then Russia and Turkey made amends and turned on Austria.
At this point I was trying to decide which way to go when I received a letter from the Russians telling me 'I want to move my tanks to Prussia and Silesia to get them into action." This blew my mind and decided for me that I would have to stay with France and concentrate on the Russians. I wrote to the Russians that this would mean war. That move I went to Sweden and Silesia as a precaution and Russia went to Prussia 'as a mistake'. My orders worked. From there it was a tactical battle and race against time against the Russians with them losing in the north and in the center.
Then with the Russians down to 5 and Germany at 10 or so he dropped. How rude.
The next 3 centers were rather easy and I was able to get an army in Armenia to really shake up the Turks. The Turks previous position was that either he or I were going to die in the game, and as I was allied with the French who was having a hard time with the Italians and the English, I had a choice of going for a very easy win that was not worth it or trying to make a point on how to end games in a somewhat social manner.
So I convinced the Turks to take a three draw with France and I. Then the weirdness happened. England agreed to be out of the draw. Then the weirdness happened when Italy with two units *Portugal and Venice, declared that he was against the draw because he wanted "my one point". Anti social behavior could not be rewarded, so the game was delayed a game year and I had to eliminate both England and ITaly so that there were only three of us.
One of the things this points out is the unfortunate situation in which under these house rules it appears that you cannot have a draw that does not include all survivors.
This translates out as a Kill Policy for most small countries since you cannot end a game without their vote. This may have been the intention in the original rules but those rules were written with a face to face game and social limits in mind, not the endless play that postal or email allows. So unfortunately England had to die along with Italy who was being just a kid looking at the scoring system herein.
Along the way in the game, Austria got knocked down to one center and I was content to leave him in the game at that (before the Kill nature of the ending a game became apparent) but then he dropped and was replaced by another player for reasons unknown and wound up dead in a squeeze play between Turkey and Germany.

How's that for an end of game statement?

Iraq: A legal war. Discuss
Under the terms of the ceasefire at the end of the first Gulf War, the Iraqi regime was given 12 months to prove that it had disarmed itself of WMD.

12 years later it had not and therefore the recommencement of the ground assault was perfectly valid as Iraq was in breach of the UN brokered ceasefire resolution.

Thoughts?

Rules Question Re: Movement
SETUP: 2 armies of a nations surround an empty SC (or any empty space) and one of those 2 armies is adjacent to an army of a different nation who can also enter the empty territory , such as Russia has armies in GAL and BOH-- Austria has an army in BUD. VIE is open.
The assumption is that BUD will move to VIE. Can GAL attack BUD and move BOH to VIE unimpeded? Or is a support move required? The question is asked because a 3rd nation wants BUD to be attacked in the event that BUD does not go to VIE. Thanks in advance.

The leagues - what a disappointment
If anyone wants to join the leagues I will be dropping out of Group F after this game and you can take my place. The league is a pile of shite. Everyone is trying so hard to win, it's like the thing is some kind of e-peen. Like you're going to go and tell your wife or your friends at work that you won some virtual text based competition and they're gonna go "Gee Bobby, you finally did something with your life, way to go!"

Get a life guys, it's 5 points at stake.

We're only a few turns in and not a single person has kept their word or offered any kind of help. When I offer help it's treated as some kind of trick or trap. If I ask for information I am treated like Satan. Everyone is super paranoid. All of the above I can handle; what I won't tolerate though is people being RUDE.

Here's a typical interaction:

Me: "Hey would you like support into <territory>.....?"

Other Player: "Screw you if you think you're going to trick me into leaving you a opening. Your evil plan is obvious... do you think I am stupid? You can go to hell!"

Me: "If I attack <territory> and you attack <territory> then we both help each other. Can you confirm that you will do this?"

Other player: "Just you do you think you are to make such demands! You have no right! Do you think I am stupid? I don't have to do ANYTHING you say. Go to hell!"

I come onto the internet for fun and I play Diplomacy for the social contact. Yes it's also about winning and losing but the league seems to have extinguished anything pleasant or social about the game.

I don't really have the personal time to devote to the Diplomacy anyway, but when I come to the PC and find a inbox full of hate, it makes me question my priorities.

So, if you want to spend your virtual online time with a bunch of arrogant, over-competitive, paranoid, hateful, duplicitous scumbags, join the leagues.

Or maybe it's just my league and the others are different.

I say, what a bore this thread was to read.

And to all those who would then jump in to say, "you didn't have to read it," I say: Indeed, I didn't but I did, thinking there was substance somewhere. None is forthcoming so far. It seems to me this is another one of those, "Forum! Side with ME in my personal conflict!" threads. I could be wrong though.

I'm in with Chripsminis's Group and I am happy with the Game. The League format is more competitive because the results are linked and that makes it more fun for me.

I do not like abuse but deal with it as I would in real life: on a case by case basis. In here it is not common.

Sometimes I taunt players to try to get an angry, hot-headed response, but direct abuse is ultimately futile.

My call to Polar Bear is keep playing. There is a lot more to come.

Think of what you would do in a face-to-face tournament if one player, when you were discussing privately, started up with abuse... I am sure that having paid your money and travelled half way round the world to compete you would determine to get past the sod and progress.
Well, weird thread I have to say.

@ Mapleleaf - regardless of what PB may say in the forum, I personally believe it is bad form to copy and paste the contents of in-game communication to a public forum. I personally believe that all in-game communication should be treated as "off the record" and thus not eligible for publication.

You may argue that bringing the issue onto the public forum makes this acceptable. However, I would like to point out that PB did not mention your name in his original post.

Anyway, my personal feeling is that PB should keep playing - we would all miss his skill in league F and I look forward to allying with him (and subsequently backstabbing him) in future games. (not this one though, my commitment to my ally Feanor is absolute ;-)
Actually the more I think about it, the more I think this is wrong. Whilst it would be wrong to penalize Mapleleaf for this after the fact (not that the FIA lets that bother them), can we please make a clear league rule that no-one in the league publishes anything said to them in private messages inside the league? (This does not preclude telling other players in the same game what they said, in your own words)

Ghost - if you agree, could you please tell all players by email? (There should be some sanction in the case of transgression).

My answer to this is, who said I was even talking about you?
=======================================
What I don't appreciate is rude communication. I've had it from two of my three neighbours; the other one seems to just be a basic lying backstabber
======================================
Possibly I just got unlucky with this group and these neighbours in particular.
=======================================
Gee, I don't know. It seems like I'm being mentioned in there somewhere, crybaby.

Things are not going your way, and this is how you react.

Pathetic.

Mapleleaf, do you have anything other to offer than abuse? Does this well ever dry up?

What is your opinion of people that do nothing else but abuse others all day long?

Do they tend to be popular, successful people or just regarded as nasty?

I wonder which you think you are.

Put a cork in it fella.
dangermouse (5551 D)

My (pretty much worthless) two cents: I don't think either player comes off particularly well in that chat. PB does seem to be performing some high-handed diplomacy, mandating terms of the alliance after the fact.

Anyway, my league game is going well...except for that damn Austrian player. He's such an ass.

"And to all those who would then jump in to say, "you didn't have to read it," I say: Indeed, I didn't but I did, thinking there was substance somewhere. None is forthcoming so far. It seems to me this is another one of those, "Forum! Side with ME in my personal conflict!" threads. I could be wrong though."

You're partially right and partially wrong.

If anyone read ths start of this thread, I was trying to understand whether I was just unlucky with hostile, rude neighbours or whether it was league play itself that had created an unpleasant super-competitive atmosphere.

Mapleleaf decided to leap out, uninvited, from the shadows of anonymity and proceeded to paste a transcript and a lot of insults. There was no need for this but, yes, as you say, his approach is "Forum! Side with ME in my personal conflict!"

For me the question is now answered. The other leagues and the other players are fine. I was just unlucky to be next to this unpleasant player. The very fact that several people have referred to this as being 'yet another' Mapleleaf dispute - and the fact that you won't find any trace of disputes in my previous games - well that's all I need to know.

In any case I don't see how it is possible to have 4 more games with these players, now this has happened, or indeed how this could be an enjoyable experience with normally-functioning Diplomacy. My point is that I come here voluntarily, for fun, and no rules or anything else mean that I have to put up with the abuse from this guy. And it shows no sign of stopping <awaits his next post>.

So I will fight on until these three guys have killed me and then end my participation. This is my choice and I hope people understand.

PB, I understand what a frustration it is, but instead of quitting the leagues, is it not better to ignore mapleleaf, and just work with Germany to take him out? His acrimonious reputation is certainly well known now due to this thread, and I think in all future league games the other players would probably join with you to remove him. If he becomes frustrated and unable to advance, he'll either 'nicen up' or quit the leagues leaving you in a most enjoyable tournament. The best revenge is living well.
Churchill (2280 D)

Personally, I hold no ill will for mapleleaf, we agree on many things.

Yet, I believe he is attracting a lot of ill-will from the general populace, something not always beneficial in politics!

I would like to stress again that I'm playing the same people; not one of them have been rude or hostile. PB, maybe your diplomacy methods are encouraging people to act more aggressive towards you for some reason.
Chrispminis (916 D)
21 Sep 08 UTC
It seems to be as if there's more hostility and rudeness in this thread itself than in the posted transcript.

Polar Bear, if this hostility is the only reason for your abdication may I point out that in the next season that you will unlikely be facing any of the same people. As well, since alliances are more situational than historical I think you'll find that the rudeness has to be curbed in future games... lest it end in mutually assured destruction.

Hey, glad to hear everyone is trying so hard in your league, I've had the opposite experience in Group B. In four seasons, a great power has failed to submit orders in three of them, though not the same one every time. At the end of 1901 only 3 great powers got to build any units, an amazing 4 great powers did NOT (ironically the person that did not submit orders in spring 1901 did get a build)! I anticipate it getting better, but it's been pretty laid back so far...
Withnail160 (1204 D)

I do not understand what is wrong with posting transcripts - it happens regularly in chat and global chat, whats the difference? It may or may not be edited, its just a version of "he said..." which may or may not be true or showing notes

MP can be a rude bastard, but so what?

PB has just got to knuckle down and get used to people standing up to him....or throw the towel in at the first sign of bad news. whatever sort of personality he is :)

PB, don't quit...next time I'm sure you and Mapleleaf will be separated far apart...and the other players are generally very nice.
The method of handling with this insult is of course not to care about it. Just treat him as a madman (insult intended for Maple) and play as normal.

Dear Kestas
I noticed you have paginated the Games tabs, but now I have a little issue while searching for something or someone there.

Before I used the Find tool of the browser, but that works only on the current page.

I know is a minimal topic, but I had no problem with the previous 1-page tabs and just was wondering if this change really is useful and what the majority of users prefers.

Thanks.
