This is a false premise based on untrue evidence. There is nothing public to incriminate (or exonerate) the president. By all means, it's important to consider what would happen if Trump is guilty and attempts to subvert the rule of law, but not to blow things out of proportions.

I think the guy is slightly biased, and find it fairly unlikely that Trump tries to fire Muller anytime soon. It would be fun to watch if he did, though. I always look forward to a good constitutional crisis.

That said, the Muller investigation should obviously run its course without interference. That's how the rule of law works: no one is above reproach. Besides, Muller is a respected former FBI head who's probably as fair of an investigator as one could get. (He may not be an alt-right supporter, but nor is he a democrat.)

it's not a constitutional crisis if Trump fires Mueller: that's one of his mandated powers as President. It's a constitutional crisis if he tells Mueller to arrive at a certain conclusion. THAT would be funny.

I think the initial firing shows pretty well that Mueller feels he has some integrity he needs to preserve.

You could make the bias case for several past investigations. Look at Republican Kenneth Starr going after Clinton on Whitewater where the case went from a real estate deal to a sex crime. After failing to find a cause over a deal where the Clinton's lost money it kept trying to find something in the witch hunt.

The current investigation keeps turning up evidence that members of Trump's close family and appointees repeated lied about working with Russians. Trump himself said he had no Russian ties when he had or tried to have deals in Russia. So clearly there is a need to finish the investigation.

Yeah, except he only fired Peter Strzok after those messages became public. Mueller already knew that Strzok covered up for Hillary (changed language in Comey draft) and it IS highly possible (we don't know for sure) that he was the FBI point man on the fake dossier for the fisa court. So.... it is biased and when Mueller got caught he took some action. Everyone he hired was a Clinton supporter (just about).

Trump is basically allowing himself to be investigated by Clinton allies and the Democratic Party. It is kind of foolish imo. He didn't do anything wrong.

@ND, he's not letting them investigate, he has been trying to stop the FBI from investigsting since he got into office, which seems like a guilty party to me.

Also he immediately backed down on his 'lock her up' promise upon winning the election. Probably because he didn't want to seem like a sore winner. But possibly because he knew the retaliation would have been the end of him (ie he is guilty and Clinton supporters would crucify him if they can prove it).

He has now said he has no intention of firing Mueller.

Ora: he does technically have that power, as the FBI falls under his personal purview. That’s why there was a push earlier in the year to have Congress make Mueller’s special counsel position exempt from firing, but it didn’t come to anything.

ND: Trump has made it pretty clear he’s not going to let anyone investigate the Clintons.

@TrPrado i thought it was a power delegated to the AG, who has said she would refuse to fire Mueller... And Trump would have to replace that role with new people until he found someone will to be his patsy...

Or he could bypass that and put the country into a constitutional crisis, as it becomes unclear whether he had the right to do what he claimed and two parts of the federal govt act directly against each other...

Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein is the one with the official authority, as AG Sessions recused himself from the case. Per Trump's suggestion, Rosenstein was the one who wrote the recommendation to fire former FBI Director Comey. If Trump asked for Rosenstein to fire Mueller, it would very likely happen. But Trump also made it clear he had no intention of anything of the sort.

I feel like, just as with the firing of Director Comey, he’d be significantly more likely to do it if he had the backing of the president.
