Slow game for reliable players
Details inside
Sevyas (973 D)
03 Mar 16 UTC
For the last few moths now, I did not have as much time as I used to to play diplomacy ... in consequence, I did not always menage to invest the needed time an effort into my games.
Joining random longer turn games is very disappointing due to much too frequent NMRs and CDs, and very low quantity and quality of communication.

That's why I am looking for reliable players who face the same problem -> never enough time, therefore interested in trying really long turn games.

I was thinking something like:
- 5 days/phase
- Gentleman's agreement to ready retreat and build phases after max 2 days
- rulebook press
- 50(?) buy in
- DSS/WTA

oh, and preferably RR 90+!

I'd be interested, I have trouble with fast-length games anymore. 89 RR should be fine, right?
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

In rulebook press, currently retreats and builds only have the option to ready, not save. A couple of people have said they'd like this changed, so we might look at doing that.

I'm interested in a game like this, but I'm away for about 6 weeks in May/June, without planned access to internet. I'll probably give this one a miss for that reason.

Bump

Chaqa, are you in?
This sounds fantastic. I've been having trouble with even 2 day phases lately because I've been so busy at work.

But Seyvas, are you sure 5 days is appropriately slow enough? I played a 3-day phase game last year and it ended up taking like 5 months or something. We could still be playing this game at Christmas.
Sevyas (973 D)
06 Mar 16 UTC
I know, it is risky. I ve had 3 day/phase games that felt like frozen in time. But just like you, I am lately very busy at work, and family as well. 5 days per phase will probably take us about 6-10 months to complete. 5 days diplomatic business, 2 days for retreats or builds, this should make us progress 2 years/month.

Sometime around november last year I joined a random 10day/phase game - the most annoying thing about it is not the slow speed, it is the lack of press. Not even the lack of quality in press, because there simply is no press (except some sporadic one liners as answers to my monologues ...)

The intention here is to get a slow game going with reliable people who understand the importance of press. If we can find some experienced players with high RR and cronic lack of time, I think this can work fine.

I'll play.
I would like to play. I love good full press, but am finding I don't have enough time for discussion in shorter phases.
ckroberts (3548 D)
06 Mar 16 UTC
Assuming everyone is on top of things, it probably won't be five days per phase, right? I know my situation is that I have a batch of two or three days in a row where I just don't have time for press. If people can get good discussions and then finalize in three days or maybe sooner, it won't take as long.
Sevyas (973 D)
06 Mar 16 UTC
I guess we could all try to finalize our orders after 3 days, with every now and then the whole 5 days counting to the end - whenever one of the players is too busy in rl or feels he did not have enough time to finish negotiations in those first 3 days. But whoever signs up needs to be ready to play, even if every phase takes 5 days.
Count me in!

We only lack one! I could easily pause for 6 weeks (I mean, this is likely to take more than eight monts already) if A Tin Can wants to be the seventh player.

I wouldn't mind a slow game with proper criminals. If you need your 7th, I'm in.
Sevyas (973 D)
07 Mar 16 UTC
Let's start this one with the 7 players we have, and when ATC returns after his 6 weeks of abstinence, we start another one with him.
One advantage of such long phases is that we can probably avoid a lot of pauses that would be needed in faster games.
I don't mind slow phases ... but after 6 weeks of pause, I would be completely out of the game and would have to re-read a lot of press ... ... ..

I'll create the game and send out invitations later today.

Is 50 buy-in ok?
Anon or non-anon?
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
07 Mar 16 UTC
50/anon sounds fine. Or non-anon. I don't care when it's press.
ckroberts (3548 D)
07 Mar 16 UTC
50 is fine, anon is strongly preferable.
50 is fine. No preference Anon/not. Fine either way.
50 is great, I don't have a preference on anon or non-anon.
Yigg (2546 D)
07 Mar 16 UTC
50 is groovy, and I would prefer anonymous. Rulebook Press, right? Though I wouldn't mind a nice Wilsonian. :)
50 is fine with me as well, don't really mind about anon or non-anon.

Gunboat signals
Are there common signals in gunboat? For example, does a support move indicate "I want u to move there" while a support hold indicates "I want u to stay there" while an attempted movement indicates "I want u to support me there"???

Tea vs. Coffee
So I have decided that its really hard to choose between the two. I drink probably about 6 cups of coffee a day using Keurig. But then I also use herbal peach tea and scottish breakfast tea for when I get bored with the coffee. In all I likely drink about 12-15 cups of something hot and thought provoking a day.

The Biggest Election So Far This Year
Iran's elections for Majlis and the Assembly of Experts. The reformists look like they're going to win big, a coalition they've put together has already won all the Tehran seats in Majlis, and they've ousted a number of hardliners in the Assembly of Experts, with President Rouhani himself picking up a seat in that. Thoughts?
