Beginner Question
I have a question about the defense of a territory and how the order I enter for the unit in that territory affects any combat in that territory.
Eadan (454 D)
17 Sep 15 UTC
If I have a unit in territory A and I have a unit in territory B that enters support-hold for the unit in territory A, must the unit in territory A enter "HOLD" as its order in order to defend against an attacking unit from territory C that is supported by a support-move order? Or, can the unit in territory A still enter either support-hold or support-move as its order and, if supported by the unit in territory B, still repel the aforementioned attacking unit from territory C that benefits from the support-move order?
MichiganMan (5121 D)

A can still support hold/move another unit while being support-held by another unit. However, if an a foreign unit attacks A, even if it's not dislodged, A's support hold/move for C is "cut" and thus ineffective.
arborinius (173 D)

The unit in territory a may do any order other than a move- ie it can support other units but may not attack.
arborinius (173 D)

Agh, ninjad.

Unit A is supported by B regardless of whether it issues Hold, Support-hold or Support-move. So, attack by C will fail unless supported by at least two other units.

Note that any support A is offering is cut by C's attack.
MichiganMan (5121 D)

learning how to "cut support" (whether hold or move) is a nuance of Diplomacy tactics that one needs to learn quickly as it's vitally important to successful attack and defense.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
17 Sep 15 UTC
If Unit A in your example happens to be a fleet, it can also convoy an army. As arborinius said, anything but "Move".
diplomat61 (223 D)
17 Sep 15 UTC
If it is a fleet, the only difference is that a convoy order is only cut if the unit is dislodged.

Thank you, everyone. So, the unit in A contributes a defense value of one to the territory even if it enters support-hold or support-move for another unit. The unit in B contributes a defense value of one as well (due to its support-hold on A), thereby forcing any enemy that wants territory A to send an attack value of three, or, two if the support in B is cut? Yes?

Yes
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

Yes. The move order contributes a defense value of zero because the unit intends to vacate the territory. All other orders contribute a defense value of one.

Thanks everyone! :)

May I ask one more: Let's say the Unit in A, having no support-hold from B, instead enters a MOVE order to C while in turn the unit in C enters a MOVE order to A, with a support-move from a unit in D. Is that a standoff since A and C each are trying to enter the other's territory or does C prevail since his attack has an attack value of two?
Yaleunc (11052 D(B))
17 Sep 15 UTC
2>1 so C prevails and A is dislodged. If A's attack on C were supported by B and C's attack on A were supported by D then the moves would bounce and both fail.
Eadan (454 D)
17 Sep 15 UTC
Yale - so if A tries to leave by entering C, and C is offering support-move to D (into A), A technically cuts the support of C, but by selecting MOVE, he in essence leaves A for D to take unopposed since A has a defense of zero?
Yaleunc (11052 D(B))
17 Sep 15 UTC
Not exactly. A cannot cut support against an attack on him. I.e. A attacking C does not cut C's support of a move into A from D. But it would cut C's support of an attack on any space other than A.

You may want to review the DATC info on the Help page. In particular section 6.D which deals with supports, cutting supports, etc.

@ Eadan: Note that many of these issues are addressed in reasonable detail in the rulebook to the original boardgame, which you may find a useful reference.

Pages 6 to 10 address most of what you've asked about in this thread.

The Republican Circ--er, Debate
Been a while since I've done this, but why not--

The (main) Republican debate is ongoing right now, will end soon...Trump, Carson, Bush, Fiorina, Rubio, Paul, Walker, Christie, Huckabee, Cruz and Kasich--who stood out, who took a dive, and who are the big winners and losers tonight? (Based on performance, NOT on who you agree with.)

Tell me a bed time story.
I want to hear a story about points. I see people with upwards of 3,000 D on here and I really don't get how that happens. There must be something of which I am unaware. I'm playing with other players of roughly my own level, which of course means I win some and I lose some. I really can't see so many people being so good that they always win so much. Are they not playing people at their level?

Need Some New Gunboats
My GBT games are finishing up, and while I'm thoroughly frustrated with their results, I need to sate my addiction. Requirements are that you not suck. I'm not that great at gunboat though, so that mostly means know what you're doing and how a stalemate line works. Sing up for as many or as few as you please. 5 point bets, anon, WTA, hidden draw.

Please welcome our new admin, HR
Given HR's poor performance as a mod, I have promoted him to admin status. For the most part, it doesn't change anything for you guys, but now you know who looks at your complains about mods or ban appeals. Thanks, HR, for agreeing to take on this task. #LongLiveModCurse

Can you actually solo without someone throwing the game?
I recently got my first solo in a non-live, full-press WTA game since 2010, but only because one player decided to throw me the game. Even at 17 centers, I could still have been stopped if everyone else worked together. This got me wondering: are there examples if high-quality games where somebody got a solo without being thrown one?

World Map Question
Question about the RIS squares on the board.

In the lower left-hand corner of the map - it that land, water, or both? Looking on the lower right-hand of the map, there appears to be an RIS land but also an RIS water. Which is it and do either of those territories directly link to the two squares in the lower left-hand side of the map?
