Beginner Question
I have a question about the defense of a territory and how the order I enter for the unit in that territory affects any combat in that territory.

The Republican Circ--er, Debate
Been a while since I've done this, but why not--

The (main) Republican debate is ongoing right now, will end soon...Trump, Carson, Bush, Fiorina, Rubio, Paul, Walker, Christie, Huckabee, Cruz and Kasich--who stood out, who took a dive, and who are the big winners and losers tonight? (Based on performance, NOT on who you agree with.)

Tell me a bed time story.
I want to hear a story about points. I see people with upwards of 3,000 D on here and I really don't get how that happens. There must be something of which I am unaware. I'm playing with other players of roughly my own level, which of course means I win some and I lose some. I really can't see so many people being so good that they always win so much. Are they not playing people at their level?

World Games are good, (20 D) bet, 20*17=340, even an alliance as big as a 5-way gets nearly (70 D), which is twice what Prado earned in his game, the inferior scoundrel

Bet high. I only place 50 pts+ games, and I'll usually only settle for 3 way draws.
thorfi (1023 D)

If you play even slightly better than average (whatever that means), then you can proceed to acquire many points by playing many games (however many you can keep up with without losing game quality). If you don't play better than average, you can't.
seth24c (5659 D)

I don't play with the intent of trying to gain points but if I was going to describe a method then I would recommend;
Play two games at a time, investing about 1/3 of your points in each and then try to (at least) double your points in each game. Rinse, wash, repeat. If you happen to lose, fall back on your reserves and keep it going.
seth24c (5659 D)
16 Sep 15 UTC
But most of the games now aren't very good for gaining points, it takes a lot of these 10 point games to get anywhere so don't be afraid to bet high if you really want to get a lot more points.

Okay. Thanks for the advice. I was suspicious there was some other road to points I was unaware of.

Oh, and those games you linked to, they are the stuff of bed-time stories.

Banned positions are really good for getting draws...
thorfi (1023 D)

Actually takeovers is a good point - occasionally you can get a really cheap set of points out of a takeover. Half price buy in (IMO should be zero, but that's a whole long debate side issue), and very much depending on the position, there are sometimes easy points to be had. E.g. I just gave away a bunch of free draw points to a replacement player in a public-only-press game who didn't even get to play one season. The only reason it hadn't been a draw prior is the previous player was unreliable.

Better chances for points in PPSC games (*insert regular chant of "Don't play PPSC"*).

The game thorfi is referring to: gameID=160979

Good news: earned five points for doing nothing! Bad news: the cheap 4-way draw I got in on lowered my Ghost Rating ever so slightly.

To Deinodon's original point: you may win some and lose some, but if you're grubbing for points, you need to improve your draw rate. My guess is most players got most of their points from draws.
thorfi (1023 D)

@Hazel-Rah :-) Yeah, I really should have stabbed the previous England in that game a few years earlier - if I'd known he was going to be so unreliable, I would have. But hindsight is always 20/20...

All it takes are winning a couple of WTA games with decent points to give a good boost to your total. It's not easy, but it happens often enough to make a difference.

@Deinodon

Most critically, you need to hang in there. Plenty of people come in, play for a while and then give up in frustration when they realize what a difficult game this is.

For example, I played Diplomacy for nearly thirty years before I won my first game. In fact, if you scroll back in the archives you can see that I was at one time mocked by my foes here for my inability to win. 'Solotard', they called me.

Now? Those who mocked me, fear me. They are unable to stand against me. Those that two fall beneath the guns of my soldiers.

Hang in there. And when you meet inexperienced players, seek to fleece them of their points. Where they're going, they won't need points.
@Deinodon: my advice - stop caring.

Points (and GR for that matter) are as much about selecting which games to play as they are about how you play them. Play crappy players, you'll get points. Play live games, you'll get points. I used to do that. Now I only play games that I want to play - challenging ones.

I'm in it for the fun, the challenge and the learning curve. Give me a hard-fought survive over an easy solo any day. Not an approach that gives me standing here in terms of points and GR, but the only one I'm interested in.
Octavious (2802 D)
17 Sep 15 UTC
In it for the learning curve? The only lesson worth learning is that everyone is beatable and that the difference between a top tier player and the rest of us is actually quite small :p. Aside from that I agree completely with TheMOW.

Having said that, if anyone is inclined to give me an easy solo one of these days don't let me put you off :).

My GBT games are finishing up, and while I'm thoroughly frustrated with their results, I need to sate my addiction. Requirements are that you not suck. I'm not that great at gunboat though, so that mostly means know what you're doing and how a stalemate line works. Sing up for as many or as few as you please. 5 point bets, anon, WTA, hidden draw.

Can you actually solo without someone throwing the game?
I recently got my first solo in a non-live, full-press WTA game since 2010, but only because one player decided to throw me the game. Even at 17 centers, I could still have been stopped if everyone else worked together. This got me wondering: are there examples if high-quality games where somebody got a solo without being thrown one?

World Map Question
Question about the RIS squares on the board.

In the lower left-hand corner of the map - it that land, water, or both? Looking on the lower right-hand of the map, there appears to be an RIS land but also an RIS water. Which is it and do either of those territories directly link to the two squares in the lower left-hand side of the map?
