Missing a turn without NMRing/CDing
In one of the games I'm in, France has not moved at all since the beginning (it's Spring 1902 now), but he hasn't NMRed or CDed, and so we can't cancel. Any idea what's going on?

House game 3/08 near Boston
I'm hosting a house game this coming Sunday (3/08) in Waltham MA, and would love a few more players. I actually already have one full board confirmed plus a couple extras, so I'm looking for 5-6 more people to make it a two-board event.

This is part of my effort to create a strong Boston community of Dippers, so all ages, skill-levels, and amounts FtF experience are welcome. Contact me if you're interested, either here or (preferably) at [email protected].

This isn't about the game specifically it is about Carebears in diplomacy in general. And I didn't start the EoG thread.

Tyran (914 D)

Never stabs. Plays for a draw. Essentially inept. Overly cautious players

That seems to be par for the course in live games, though. The press goes something like "u + mE = 4 LyF" and the alliance is indestructible.

JY the 1st two games had I gone for a solo would've cost me any points as someone else would've soloed. The last game was diplomacy etiquette. Turkey CDed and everyone wanted the game to end.

JY- I on the other-hand am not, I have never drawn when i could have gone for a win. I think while there is some truth to long-standing allainces the game should never be played for a draw. every player in the top GR and every diplomacy commentator online agrees.
Tyran (914 D)
06 Mar 15 UTC
Minister would that be considered spamming as I've already posted this thread and commented in another about this? I don't want to hop to any additional threads.
JamesYanik (548 D)
06 Mar 15 UTC
But Tyran, it doesn't matter about points, or at least that is what you said in the game that just ended! All in all I play the game how I see ft and if you dislike my style, fine! but when you make a thread denouncing me for simply being a conservative player who likes alliances... It's ridiculous! I stab when it suits me, or when I don;t like a player. But if there is a player who was nice to me... I don't stab. I work with them. And for some reason that makes me the antichrist!

i'm just going with my personal belief that everyone else is wrong

lol jk stay fresh
Tyran (914 D)
06 Mar 15 UTC
Playing for a draw when you could easily solo and sticking to an alliance all game is not playing diplomacy correctly. The games you used as an example I'm fairly certain all of my neighbors were eliminated and I helped with that. And the final one was simply good manners to draw. It should've been canceled tbh. And hey that's my personal belief as well. But we are all entitled to said beliefs.

i think this thread is a bit too much, but i want to address this:

"But if there is a player who was nice to me... I don't stab."

why?
I second kasimax. The true beauty of Diplomacy, as I see it, is the opportunity it offers to dissociate ourselves from "real" morality in favor of a "what-if" morality. What if we took realism to an extreme? What if the social contract were dissolved? What if seven people were each given a dagger and locked into a room, and told that whoever makes it out alive WINS? And all seven believe it — or at least behave as though they believe it; and they believe that to win transcends all reason for equivocation, for generosity. They believe that the prize of victory is such that it's indisputably, unequivocally worth risking everything for a chance at achieving.

This is Diplomacy. Carebear Diplomacy destroys the illusion and thrusts a pure, self-contained universe right back into the real world, the escape from which is the entire point of the endeavor in the first place.

I tend to be conservative in my play style and my percentage of draws proves that (the fact I just play WTA and try to choose only high level games also have a part).
But being conservative isn´t the same of being a carebear. You should always try to win, have a plan on how you will since start, just when it´s pretty clear that you can´t win, then you fight to get a draw (with you in the draw of course).
But sometimes you hold and alliance game long because it´s what best fit your plans and sometimes because your ally (and you) set such a defensive position that a stab will probably cost the game for both.
And the great beauty of this game is that even with the same set of rules, people play the game with really diferent perspectives and rationale and to win you should be able to deal with this.

I openly admit to being far too soft. Winning is a great thing to aim for, but it isn't the sole reason we play the game and there are some tactics I do not use purely because I don't enjoy them. I have also never had the stomach for draw thinning.
Chumbles (791 D(S))
06 Mar 15 UTC
I think everyone should play the way they want to; I might get annoyed or irate because of someone's reasons for doing stuff, but they should play the way they want to. Some of the people I've trusted most in my life have been back-stabbing bastards in the game. And that last is the essence of this: play how thou wilt shall be the law and the whole of the law. (Standard rules of the game apply!)
Of course, all this goes out the window with PPSC. Part of my problem with the rules of the rules of the 2014 Webdip Tournament.

As i play to win, i have no issue with draw, and fully admit, that usually i wont stab an ally if we worked together to get to the draw. Not that i wont, but usually. otherwise youre probably not at the draw. To me it kinda goes along with not thinning the draw. I will thin the draw if a particular country lent nothing to getting there though

"I stab when it suits me, or when I don;t like a player. But if there is a player who was nice to me... I don't stab." I think this is why you've never been able to beat me, whether it's me or someone else you're working with.

Diplomacy with WMD's
every country begins with 1 WMD(can only be used after 1902 build phase) every other year would be an automatic WMD for countries larger than 7 centers. (this way no nuclear war in 1901, or 1902). A WMD would annihilate all forces enemy or friendly in a given location and if it is a center render it neutral and impassable for 1 year. what would this add to the game?

I thought it would be interesting to see MAD employed in diplomacy.
