Getting a second undergrad degree in a mostly unrelated subject
I think I may end up doing this 2-4 years from now, and I just wonder how common it is.

Also, a potentially stupid related question - how possible is it to get into a grad school in a subject you did not study in undergrad? Can you just take courses a la carte to meet the pre-reqs and/or beg them to let you give it a shot? All my research on grad school doesn't turn up much on what kind of students are accepted into the programs.

A very fun game all around. I'm very pleased I got to be everyone's neighbor.

In the beginning I had a hard time deciding if I wanted to work with Germany or France. I was getting along with them both well, but when I have the chance, I like to go after France first. So, I entered the Channel and was set to convoy into PIC to take BRE next year.

France and I got to talking, though, and he suggested the Hey Bresto, in which England takes BRE with a fleet. This eliminates Frances as a naval power and slows down any potential land assault England was planning allowing the two countries to work together. I'm all for gambits and this one hardly would cost me anything to try, so I gladly went for it.

We started moving against Germany while I kept egging on Italy to move against France to keep him weak. This, in retrospect, was a serious mistake. I should have encouraged him and Turkey to work together to finish off Austria, who quickly exploded in size once Italy turned West.

Russia and I had some problems in the North, which slowed down our assault on Germany. I don't remember who stabbed who first, but I'm willing to bet I was the guilty party. Again, probably not the best plan as Russia would have gladly gone after Austria, too.

France made two serious mistakes back-to-back, first allowing Italy to take MAR and then allowing him to retreat into Iberia. This allowed me to move my fleets south at France's request to help him with Italy. At this point, I thought there was a very real chance I could solo.

I made a deal with Italy, who was quickly losing his home centers, that I would keep him in the draw in Iberia if he helped me solo and the attempt failed. This allowed me to take TUN. Now I only needed to lock down MOS or MUN to get to 18.

Unfortunately, Austria really didn't have any enemies at this point, as he had a solid relationship with Turkey. I also wasn't able to convince France to help me get MUN, even though I put up my draw vote once Germany was gone to try to turn him against AT.

We then messed around for a while as Austria and I had a pissing contest over who would be in the draw. Ultimately, it became clear I wasn't going to get that 18th center, and I was seriously jeopardizing my position by insisting we keep Italy in the draw. So, I brokered a deal with AT to eliminate France and Italy and we drew.

Overall, a solid game, and thanks to abge for putting it on.
To think, there were talks to cancel after Italy's first turn NMR, I'm glad we continued.
As far as the game, I started playing my typical prolong neutrality tactic. That came to a full stop when Italy would LITERALLY sing songs about how he believed a Jugg was forming. That pretty much forced my hand to side with Austria, cemented by our plan to disband Austria's fleet so he would have 100% focus on land.
However, some miscommunication lead to a stab for Bulgaria. For those in the Art of Press thread, this is a teaching point. I was intentionally being vague on my moves for Autumn 03 for two reasons: I didn't want a hint of my convoy to leak, and I was seeing how much give Austria would have. In other words, I was testing Austria's reaction for how much info would be prudent to tell, in case it became important later. It turns out it didn't, but I was willing to pay the cost of the center for that information. After that, it became straightforward with my goal to destroy Italy in vengeance of his annoying press (This, as I think is mentioned in the Press thread, is a case of going silent to keep from having your head explode with anger.) France and I sympathized for our dislike of Italy and I tried to keep his spirits up because I knew I would need him to take on England. England, I tried to convince to funnel into Russia, but he was having none of it. And yeah, Soon it was 3 main powers and we had came to terms for a draw. Good Game all.
And if anything reads weird, it's cause I'm typing this half asleep.

it was a fun game, and a unique game.

i tried ealy to get Italy to be my friend and he actually NMR'd the first turn. i tried to tell him i was there for him, and he stabbed me in Trieste in fall01.As a 4 sc Austria in 02, it allowed the Russian to get into galicia. I also went back to the stabber italy and said it was fine and we could rectify the ship and he could keep Trieste for a long term friendship. He agreed, but i turned instantly and took back Trieste. mean time i had reached out to the turk and expressed a need to start curtailing the Russian who got big quick. if i remember correctly, i offered the turk to attack Greece in a fake stab, that allowed me to agreeably disband my fleet. to set up a Austrian move into Rumania. at the same time, the Italian and i said an eye for an eye and started working together again. Italy and France had a hate war going, and that led to the turk and I developing a A/T, and i agreed to be army and he would go fleet heavy and growth prospects would not get entangled. the Russia was still large but after the English finished of the German, he made his way north on the Russian. this was great. I offer the Russian peace so he could meet the impending English invasion and i moved right in as he switched fields. Russia would soon fall. the turk and i see a growing England now and it was easy to sell a lasting alliance. i was really never a solo threat because i am Austria with no fleet. both the turk and i thought we could get 17 so the solo was never a real issue to us.
By this time the Italian had gone under the English umbrella and France had migrated to our side, as time passed, draw was likely and England demanded for the death of the french and life for the Italian. Uh no. in short it had to be both to go and we settled at three

there was a moment near the end that i had thought maybe i could solo as a fleetless Austria but i had made my deal and i honored my word

Fun all around

Actually, I came up with the disband greece idea:

(To: Austria, from you) - Autumn, 1902: I propose let me disband Greece, you can make an ineffective move like hitting Bulgaria to ensure Italy can't support. If Russia thinks we're gonna make a play for rum and he uses bohemia against Munich with France, than fall will be unused and you should be able to force yourself in. Letting Budapest be open to rebuild an army.

I wasn't concerned about any solo attempt from you. My last army build was designed to plug my entrances and I would still have units around Italy to guard there. Plus had you turned, I would have zipped over to the Adriatic to keep Trieste occupied and prevent any fleets.

the attempt could of come 2 years prior, while England only had two armies in Germany, and the french had offered help to get there. you are correct that it was your idea for fleet disband

In 1901, I offered an alliance to England to fight France. He agreed, and so we both sent a message to France offering a WT with the intention of immediately going back on it and attacking him. France agreed, although he tried to get me on board for a Sealion.

In the fall of 1901, England and I were discussing what to do with Belgium and France. We both wanted to deny France the extra build conferred by Belgium but I also wanted to carry on the attack. I bounced France out of Belgium and told England to convoy an army to Brest (France had told me he was not going to cover Brest with his fleet). England, however, moved his fleet into Brest (and simultaneously botched a move order for his army). This aroused my suspicions because (1) no one actually screws up orders like that and (2) this was the setup for a Hey Bresto. England assured me that it was merely a mistake, and France was sending me messages to indicate how his displeasure at England, so I thought little of it.

I was hoping that an English army in Brest would allow us to push deeper into France and give me the chance to make up for limiting myself only to one build in 1901, but this proved to be a mistake. The English fleet in Brest did little to help, and from what I've read above, I was right in guessing it was a Hey Bresto.

In spring 1902, I was talking with Russia about how I would not help England into Sweden if in exchange he stayed out of Bohemia. I wanted to make sure that Austria didn't go under because he was the only person I figured I could maintain an alliance with. I told England that I would support him into Sweden in the fall because I wanted to give Russia at least something to trust me on, but we had an argument about this. England eventually convinced me to help him take Sweden in the spring. It turned out that Russia moved to Bohemia anyway, so I guess it didn't matter too much that I'd helped England take Sweden.

While this was going on, I was also talking to Italy. Austria had passed on some information that Italy was gunning for Munich, so I tried to confront him about this. Naturally, he denied it, and from what I was able to gather from others was that Italy was telling something slightly different to everyone. I bounced him out of Tyrolia anyway because I absolutely did not want him near Munich and I was also concerned that he would help Russia take Austrian centres.

In fall 1902, England, France, and Russia all conspired to attack me. I lost Denmark and Munich, but gained Holland. I was promised Belgium, but England took it instead. I had tipped my hand to England immediately prior because I figured that since I had helped him take Sweden he wouldn't be in search of additional supply centres and I also hoped that he hadn't solidified an alliance with France.

Following that phase, I offered support to each of the three countries against another, citing vengeance as my motivation. France and Russia both agreed they would like my help against England, so I made plans to attack England. I told Russia to take Denmark in the spring so that he could hopefully move on the North Sea in the fall, but somehow our communications got crossed and he tried to support me into Denmark. He told me he had simply erred in entering his orders, but after I had already swallowed that line from England, I wasn't having it this time. I took English support into Sweden (because he had agreed to attack Russia with me), but then he took Holland.

After that, I took back Denmark in the spring, but there were English units all over me, and I knew it would be an essentially futile exercise to survive for much longer. I spoke to France about taking back Munich, but I generally stopped trusting his word too. After I lost Kiel, I figured I might be able to help anyone against England, so I just did what France told me to do while waiting for elimination.

"no one actually screws up orders like that"

The funny thing is I actually did screw up my convoy to Hol almost exactly like that at the very end of the game, which is how France took it. I thought I had completely blown it with Austria. I was so pissed.
