Sad thing is - this is war Obama said we were *supposed* to be fighting, and Obama has never really fought it...he's just spent 4 year malingering around, not providing the troop levels requested - not that it would have mattered... - but if this is the war he "wanted" to fight, then why didn't he fight it?

Try and read. I said we should have left years ago or keep the current level till the Afghan election is over. As it is, we're leaving in big numbers just as there will be a presidential transition (Karsai is term-limited), an unstable time in even an established democracy.

I don't want another ten years. This war was fought in the wrong way ever since America moved big numbers of troops in rather than just special forces. It just seems like the height of folly to leave just as Afghanistan changes administrations. A coup or other crisis coming from the election which destroys the Afghan government would be the biggest foreign policy embarrassment in American history, and it could be stopped by a slight extension. Or immediate withdrawal starting tomorrow. But the current plan has us leaving at the worst possible time we could ever leave.

As for your assertion we need to keep levels til after the election -- it will make zero difference in the long run. It is a tribal nation, essentially, in which outsiders (the US, the UN, etc.) have tried to force a unified government where the people have no cultural desire to have one. We can hold mock elections all we want....and as it always has, when the outsider military leaves, they will revert back to whatever it is their culture history dictate. democracy is not a part of their cultural history, and our imposition of it on them with guns sure as hell isn't going to transform them in to one.
