Just realized
The rhetoric of this website is so bombastic and antagonistic because that's how people who play diplomacy with each other inevitably end up feeling about each other. Duhhhhhhhhhh.

Add in your standard issue krellin, and agitate with a wooden spoon occasionally. Voila! gameID=696969

EOG Trying Gunboat Again, Be nice
LakersFan (899 D)

Lesson learned: Make sure to be a border power to ensure success in gunboat.

Corollary: If Italy attacks Austria, they are both doomed to be swept through. Particularly when Austria suicides on Italy for revenge.
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))

Locked up completely in a stalemate with turkey nearly all game.

Italy - instead of holding yourself you could have supported either one of us to break the other and started to regain your units, then you may have been in better position to not be wiped out just before the draw.
My mind was blown when I looked at S15 and thought I saw a successful convoy from Smy to Lvp.

Uhm, yeah, sorry Lee, I thought I could do better against you and actually I was doing well. Then I made a mistake, lost the opportunity to gain more and since England was rising fast I rushed to seal Med. I wouldn't do the same moves again against you, it was silly of me, I should have waited for a better chance after wiping Italy off, having the chance to put armies in Ven - Tyr.

I'm happy that you accepted Rum as my peace offering.

It's funny that we needed England to take Venice! :D

(I feel bad for Italy though)

Uh, that Smy - Lvp... once I have a chance to draw a red diagonal line on the map, I don't miss it... :D

BoV, its fine you just stabbed a little too early where it wasn't crippling. I was going to vacate serbia for you but you took it before I could. Italy was really puzzling to me, the one point where you got an advantage was b/c he support held trieste - which was crazy to me when you were either sitting in or threatening naples. Then he didn't poke into the battle again, lol. I didn't feel bad he didn't do anything to stop the solo and bunkered down for several years just holding.
BreathOfVega (597 D)
12 Nov 12 UTC
Well, I didn't want to take Naples, I only wanted to bounce with him. My goal was to stop France.
His third army build was good, so he wasn't being a threat to me but was still needed to stalemate England with Tus/Pie.

I didn't expect Ven S Tri, it was great, even if that fleet in Trieste was good for him too. That's why I feel bad for his elimination... I don't play for points or GR, so a 4-way draw was good for me, but I wanted to close the game asap because I'll be soon on vacation.

And he asked us to be nice...
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))

Oh, he started the game? Well there is a lesson in gunboat, don't bunker down, you better mercenary yourself or find away to get back to a viable amount of units and get yourself into position to be a necessary piece of the stalemate line. :)
My initial plan was to knock Russia out of the north altogether (success!), then leave him alone while I favored Germany at France's expense. Then, at that time, presumably I would have been strong enough to either stab Germany and go for the solo, or help Germany crush the remnants of Russia while I advanced as far as I could against Italy before the lines hardened. But when Germany built his third fleet, that was pretty much an open declaration of war against me. So, I had to play a patient game and flank Germany. Fortunately, France was too tied down and overly land based to force me to stop trying to gain control over the Baltic. Even more fortunately, Russia and Turkey were squabbling and occupying all of Russia's attention. So, it was basically a mano y mano duel with Germany, and I think I acquitted myself fairly well even before France decided to stab Germany and throw the balance decisively in my favor. I was cackling with delight when I saw Germany turn his full fury on France, and I was more than happy to help him reduce the vile blue hordes. Unfortunately, France collapsed a little too quickly, and suddenly, Turkey and Russia had 18 very good reasons to kiss and make up.

All in all, I had fun, but then, I would, considering the result.

But he was, in my opinion. It's just that England didn't take the chance to put an army to Tus; then cutting Tyrolia from Pie and go for Munich, and in the meantime cutting Rome from Tus and taking TyS while I was still taking my fleets to Ion (why Aeg H, btw?).
BreathOfVega (597 D)
12 Nov 12 UTC
Yeah, Bob, you scared me when you danced in the Med...
Well, I was toying with the idea that there was a Russian weak spot in Livonia that I could use to try and grind my way through his northern armies to Berlin, and I jumped into the Med to see if I could figure out some way to maybe pick up one or two more SCs down there, but frankly, I didn't want to play another fifteen years on the off chance I could grind my way to eighteen somehow. Given the way that Russia functioned as a de facto ally, I was hoping he could get something out of this experience, as well.
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))

B/c munich was untouchable i never even needed a tyrolia hold on it. I dont understand what why Aeg H means?
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
12 Nov 12 UTC
meh, there was a brief hole at livonia after you had already thrown up holds across the board signaling us to kill italy. Even if you got in there you get moscow but thats it, not 3 more. :P
BreathOfVega (597 D)
12 Nov 12 UTC
Lee, maybe I am wrong (sure I am), but with StP - Botnia - Baltic he could go for Livonia; then you would have to guess what to support with Silesia (if Ber or Mun). Am I wrong?

Just when you took Aegean, you stopped there - I was sure you wanted to use that fleet to stalemate England in Ionian, since there was the chance for Italy to cut Rome and then I'd have to guess what to defend with Tunis (NAf or TyS).
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
12 Nov 12 UTC
yeah i did want to but then the game should have ended but we goofed and both supported each other lol. Bob gave up going for the solo pretty early, i did get scared when i saw him pretend he was going in for it.
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
12 Nov 12 UTC
yes there could have been a guessing game there i guess but not 3 centers worth., which why didnt you come up to tyrolia, that would have stuffed that?
BreathOfVega (597 D)
12 Nov 12 UTC
If he took Mun (or Ber, or both?) and I lost TyS because I guessed wrong, he could have gone for Tunis or Rome as 18th center. Happy he didn't try, anyway....
Good night guys, midnight here.
The way I was thinking about things was that had I got St.P-Livonia, you would have retreated to Warsaw. My guess then would have been that you would have support held Moscow from Warsaw, meaning I could have either gotten to Prussia or forced Silesia to support Prussia, putting Munich in play through a rather lengthy chain of events. but I would have had to have you guess incorrectly at my intent at pretty much every step of the way, and then, even if by some chance I miracle my way into Berlin and Munich, I still have to figure out some way of getting another SC somewhere. I probably would have tried to work on the Italian peninsula, forcing your fleets to arrest my movement, and hoped that i could have somehow used that attention to get to the point where I could possible take Tunis in an autumn season, but that seemed an awful lot of work for a relatively small chance of success.

Rule question Re: convoyed army cutting support
I should know better, but does a convoyed army cut support to the province it is attempting to reach? I want to support hold the fleet that is next to the province, so I don't want to use my fleet, but I've got an idle army that I wouldn't mind convoying if it will cut supported action by the unit in the province I am convoying to.

Socialized Medicine
People who defend communism often take Cuba as an example and in particular the Cuban health care system. I once saw this movie by Michael Moore which I found manipulative, and I don't want to use it as a direct source, but it did inspire me to think about this subject.

When I play Gunboat...
1. Everyone likes to attack Russia.
2. Austria always seems to attack Italy when I hear conventional wisdom is for them to team up.
3. In light of Austria attacking Italy, S01 A-Venice to Trieste works well for Italy despite conventional wisdom that says stay neutral, especially as Italy.

About the only thing that makes sense about that game was the final score. I dunno whether to be ecstatic about LSU finding an offense or pissed that the same old coaching miscues cost the team the win.
