Getting people to talk
I usually get the ball rolling and open up communication with everyone before spring of the first year is over. However, recently I took over for someone and I can't get any dialogue going with the other folks. Any suggestions?

Daily Christian Slaughter Thread
Perhaps I'm just glib. I guess I understand that Jesus might want to test his flock by making them martyrs every once in a while, but why would he allow them to massacre innocents in his name? This thread will explore this question, semi daily.

Buying a Truck
So, I'm thinking of buying a truck with my parents to help them with yard work. It will mostly be for picking up mulch and trees, bringing the lawnmowers for maintenance, and I'd like to use it to plow their driveway. I'm thinking a Ford Ranger from '95-'00. Thoughts?

Diplomacy App?
See below.
dave bishop (4694 D)

I'm going inter-railing across Europe with some friends this summer, and thought the numerous and lengthy train journeys could be enlivened by a few games of diplomacy.

Unfortunately, I don't think the trains in Eastern Europe have internet, and I don't want to bring my board with me. There is an app on my ipod touch for diplomacy, but I'm afraid it needs internet to work (which would make it a really rubbish app, as I have internet anyway).

Does anyone know if there's an app that doesn't need internet to work, or have any other suggestion of how we could play? Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that you need internet to access the website... you need to be connected to see the changes in the games... so i'm going to say no.

Back in the late 80s or early 90s, there was a DOS program.
dave bishop (4694 D)

@achillies: Obviously i wasn't asking about one connected to a website...

As in, you can buy monopoly apps that you can just play with friends, no internet. Self contained. I wondered if there was an equivalent for diplomacy.

I don't know then... i still would guess not.

Someone was talking in the forum the other day about a Diplomacy app they had made for android that might have the capabilities you are after.
JECE (1322 D)
06 Jun 12 UTC
Yeah, if all you need is an adjudicator you've got it. I not sure if it's for any operating system other than Android, though.

For the ios, I don't know. If you have a laptop, there's always jdip...
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Some of the fancier European trains do have internet, but either way, an offline app would be nice. Don't know a thing about making them work offline.
TheFlyingBoat (2743 D)

Just bring a laptop with Jdip and use it as an adjudicator. I am assuming you will converse with notes etc.
SunZi (1275 D)

Unfortunately the app I wrote, Little Dipper, only works on Android. Maybe one of your friends has a Samsung phone...
JECE (1322 D)

Or you could try making a board with magnets. ;-)

@spyman, SunZi
Sorry what's android (please excuse my poor understanding of technology). I'll ask them about the Samsung thingy...

@bo sox48
Unfortunately we're in Eastern Europe for most of the trip so ours probably won't...

@fortnox, TheFlyingBoat
I didn't know about jdip, that's really useful, thanks! I think that's probably what I'll use.

Android is an operating system used on many mobile devices. The major ones are Android, Apple iOS, Microsoft Windows Phone, Symbian and BlackBerry.
spyman (424 D(G))
07 Jun 12 UTC
dave, if one of your friends has an Android phone, for example the Samsung Galaxy Note or the Samsung Galaxy Nexus - they can install the app. (The Note would be idea because it has such a enormous screen.) Samsung isn't the only company that uses Android - several of the big brands use Android. It is the main competitor to Apples iOS - so unless all your friends have iPhones I would say there is a good chance one of them will have an Android.
Wait, what Android app? I see a "Little Dipper" in the market but it's a geological surveying tool. Are you talking about Droidippy?
ghug (5068 D(B))
07 Jun 12 UTC
Not every android app is in the market.

That's obvious and not at all helpful.
In case anyone else is wondering: http://getjar.com/littledipper
Thanks ghug :D

Sorry, I was going to find the link and then I accidentally posted and forgot about it.
Eh, it's cool. Sorry if I came off like a jerk there. SunZi, this app is pretty cool.
Apparently right now I think everything is cool.
SunZi (1275 D)
07 Jun 12 UTC
Thanks but I think it could be cooler still. Currently I'm working on making it compatible with higher resolution devices - not sure if it will work with the Galaxy Note - and adding options for different DATC resolutions. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for the next version, either by posting here or at:

Thanks spyman i'll ask around. How are you btw, its been a while since we played together?

Thanks for the link thatwasawkward, looks like a great app. I just wish there was a version for ipod touch!

You can get territory-conquest based games for Android, and Apple products I believe. If no-body has suggested it, try looking at European War 2 or 3. I have European War 2,, for my Android tablet. While it does not include Diplomacy aspects, the general territory based strategy is good. It's quite alot like a WW2 version of the popular PC series Total War, except without lots of Empire management...
It's worth checking out.

Taking this from the Great Debate thread. So who do you guys like better? Any match ups you'd like to discuss or what not. I'm personally a Marvel fan because I feel they use more shades of grey in their writing and plotlines.
