I think it's time to donate a few more bucks to kestas! ;-)

I'm confident this wasn't a money issue, but I threw $25 Kestas' way regardless, it's always a good time to donate a little money! I promised ab I'd donate $20 in his honor, back on his webDip birthday, and I threw in an extra $5 for interest, since it's been so long since I said I'd do that. I'm sure all donations would be much appreciated, so feel free, those that are so inclined!

At the bottom of http://webdiplomacy.net/?pingability=on you'll now see a small status code, which is checked for every 15 minutes. If it isn't normal once I get an e-mail, twice I'll get a text, and if it isn't normal for 2 hours I'll get a call. (I'll decrease the frequency so I get a text sooner after a trial period)

It changes from normal if the server is down, in panic mode, games are paused after downtime, if there's an error, or if there's less than 10% free space on any partition, so hopefully that'll help avoid / minimize downtime in future.

Kestas, you need to thank abgemacht, he asked for people to donate to the site rather than get him a "birthday" present, so that money was donated in his name! :-)

Can I make a claim for the emotional trauma I've suffered by not being able to get on the site for one evening, panic set in, I was all a-shiver, I feel my fundamental human rights have been violated, where's my MP when I need him !!

But then I looked on that other site and it looks like this but you can play 1v1 there and 4-player games ....... what is that other site ??

vdiplomacy.net (or .com) is a sister site. It is based on the same code but with variants including special code for those variants, and other special functionality that Sleepcap/Oli has added over time. Different database so you have to create a user over there as well to play there.

The game hand off feature there sounds awesome for sitting purposes/reducing the number of CD's

@Nigee - The code is open source. Oli used it to create a variant site and it has Kestas's blessing. Our own map variants (World IX and Ancient Med) both came from VDip.
