Actually, I agree with that to some small degree. Actually, to my understanding blacks calling eachother Nigger and gays calling eachother Fag is an attempt to do just that, to reclaim the vernacular and pull the teeth of the ones who try to use it to put them down.

But insisting we put all the onus on them isn't really fair. It sounds like you are saying "as long as there is a black person in the world who says Nigger, than I can too." Well, you CAN. It's not a racial slur. It's a word. When nigger calls nigger nigger, it is a word of affection from one person to another. So it is not by definition a racial slur. That's absolute crap. I had a nickname growing up that I hated. Everybody knew I hated it and they called me by it anyways, probably because I raged when I heard it. Somehow, in my adult life, an acquaintance discovered that nickname and in jest began calling me by it.

It hurt more than I still could ever believe, even though he had no way of knowing it would, and I was wise enough at that point to not show it. Words DO have power, whether you choose to show it or not. I don't think in my life I'll EVER be able to hear that word without being angry. Even when its used in its proper common-use form, I still cringe.

This must be the smallest fraction of what a black man feels when he hears "Nigger."
