World DipCon will tip off in 81 days at the historic Congress Plaza Hotel in downtown Chicago. The list of attendees is now up to 66 and includes players from all over the States and Canada, plus Australia, France and the Netherlands. It should be the largest North American tournament since at least 2005.
Here are a few things you should know about the event.
* The dates are Aug. 10-12, and it will be at the Congress Plaza Hotel in downtown Chicago. The hotel is right on Grant Park, the scenic location of President Obama's acceptance speech four years ago. It's within walking distance of our city's museum campus -- containing the Field Museum of Natural History, the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium -- the Art Institute, and Lake Michigan. In short, it's a great location.
* WDC will be a five-round event, with two rounds each on Friday and Saturday, and a final round on Sunday. Best three rounds will count for score, so players can take a couple of rounds off if they so choose to enjoy all that Chicago has to offer. Keep in mind that the tournament will start at 9:45 a.m. on Friday and end no later than 5 p.m. on Sunday.
* The room rate at the Congress is $129 per night, plus tax, for a single or double. That's a competitive rate for the city. We have noted a couple of cheaper options on our website, including a hostel. The cheaper options are both within two blocks of the venue. Also, one player got a room at a place on the next block for only $79 per night by doing a blind search for a two-star hotel on Hotwire.
* The tournament fee is $70 at the door, $60 if you preregister. (For students, it's $35 at the door, $30 if you preregister.)
