Downtime
Apologies for the downtime. The web server's logs were taking up a huge amount of space, so the database had nowhere to write to.
24 hours have been added to all games, except short-phase games which will have been paused.

Contacting the Moderators
The game 'Masters of Europe' got paused during the recent problem, and we need to get it re-started by the moderator. There are 2 inactive players who won't vote to resume, and we never voted to pause it. Anyone know how to contact the moderator, or perhaps they will see this?
thanks.

TV no longer ubiquitous?
So, I'm currently moving to a new apartment and I'm probably not going to pay for TV service. Has anyone else taken this approach? It's so expensive for such a poor service, I'm having trouble justifying the cost.

Can a tactically skilled player succeed?
Would a player who is highly tactical and has great and innovative moving abilities, but lacks on some of the finer Diplomacy skills, manage to succeed? Basically, a debate on tactics vs diplomacy and level of importance.

22nd Annual World Diplomacy Championship
The 22nd Annual World Dip Con is coming to Chicago this summer. The dates are Aug. 10-12. Make your plans to be there!
JimTheGrey (968 D(S))
22 May 12 UTC
World DipCon will tip off in 81 days at the historic Congress Plaza Hotel in downtown Chicago. The list of attendees is now up to 66 and includes players from all over the States and Canada, plus Australia, France and the Netherlands. It should be the largest North American tournament since at least 2005.

Here are a few things you should know about the event.

* The dates are Aug. 10-12, and it will be at the Congress Plaza Hotel in downtown Chicago. The hotel is right on Grant Park, the scenic location of President Obama's acceptance speech four years ago. It's within walking distance of our city's museum campus -- containing the Field Museum of Natural History, the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium -- the Art Institute, and Lake Michigan. In short, it's a great location.

* WDC will be a five-round event, with two rounds each on Friday and Saturday, and a final round on Sunday. Best three rounds will count for score, so players can take a couple of rounds off if they so choose to enjoy all that Chicago has to offer. Keep in mind that the tournament will start at 9:45 a.m. on Friday and end no later than 5 p.m. on Sunday.

* The room rate at the Congress is $129 per night, plus tax, for a single or double. That's a competitive rate for the city. We have noted a couple of cheaper options on our website, including a hostel. The cheaper options are both within two blocks of the venue. Also, one player got a room at a place on the next block for only $79 per night by doing a blind search for a two-star hotel on Hotwire.

* The tournament fee is $70 at the door, $60 if you preregister. (For students, it's $35 at the door, $30 if you preregister.)

You can find all the info you need, including the schedule and lodging info, at our website, http://windycityweasels.org/wdc. If you have questions, don't hesitate to contact me. Please consider joining us for a great weekend of Diplomacy in the Windy City.

Best,

JimTheGrey

I will be in Venice, Italy those three days, hanging out with my brother's family that lives in Spain, which is kind of a bummer since it would be pretty cool to check out Chicago...

I highly recommend making the trip for this, even if it's the only face-to-face tournament you attend anytime soon. The Chicago group puts on amazing events year after year, and this will be (as Jim said) the largest North American event in recent years.

I didn't rate Venice much to be honest. Lots of Graffiti in the places where they really should clean it off. Gondolar ride for my wife and I, cost a ridiculous ammount (even after haggling for 10 mins). We found the South of Italy much better and more interesting. The driving has to be seen around the Naples area, otherwise you wouldn't believe the tales I could tell. ;)

Excellent, nice work Jim!

Larfinboy, thanks for the heads-up. I'll be starting in Rome, a quick stop in Pisa, Florence for three nights and ending up in Venice for one or two days, still have to nail that down... Graffiti happens, I suppose, and so does spending money on vacation, but knowing what to expect is priceless! :-)
