There was once this guy with a double account who posted on the forum under the wrong screen name and then created an argument with himself: "SHUT UP YOU'RE GONNA GET US BOTH BANNED!"

He was b&. Quickly.

I once did a multiaccount myself; this was years ago, and I was detected. My other account, Civil Disorder ltaly, was used to join games in which Italy was in Civil Disorder (often in games that started with six players, back when webDiplomacy authorized that, and the seventh player was the dummy account named Civil Disorder Italy).

I was allowed to keep cteno4 and finish my games as Civil Disorder ltaly (which is not how the site has usually handled multiple-account holders). I believe I was doing a service to the site by allowing games to have a seventh player even though I was also in violation of the site's rules of operation. It was also a lot of fun to watch the global chat when I joined up: WHAT THE FUCK? IS KESTAS PLAYING TRICKS ON US?

David, you can't be sure until you accuse them on the forums for proper investigation. If you suspect a cheater, make sure to create a forum post with the game and Player ID. Do NOT email the mods at [email protected], as they are very busy and will be annoyed.

The way my account was detected was:

1. My screen name made me pretty much suspect from the get-go, and
2. I was using the same IP addresses to log in as Civil Disorder ltaly and as cteno4 at around the same times each day.

Mods can also look at the press each country sends during gameplay, and the consistency of my syntax/word choice/etc. probably made them reasonably confident that these two accounts were being played by the same player.

Of course, most multiaccounters who get banned are playing more than one country in the same game. In that case, good coordination without any press, frequent registration in the same games, suicide in favor of one account over the other, etc. are also good indications of a multiaccount players.
