The Roads NOT Taken--If You Weren't Doing What You Are Right Now...?
Simple question--

If you weren't doing or majoring in whatever it is your profession or major is now, what wold you have chosen? What was that 2nd Road that seemed so tantalizing, maybe...but you took Road #1 instead, (bonus points for--why?) :)

The site needs a banner.
We are having far too many cheating accusations on the forum. It would be nice if it was stated clearly and visibly that it should not happen.

Ghost Ratings?
What are they? I've seen mentions of them, but I'm in the dark as to what they actually are. Would someone care to elaborate?

Best Webdip Chess Player?
I think it would be interesting to find out who the best chess player on webdip is and see if there is any correlation between that and their GR. Though they would likely be very good at tactics, I know a lot of people who are good at chess and socially awkward, which I would think would make them less likely to be able to effectively negotiate.

What are your thoughts? Would anyone be interested in setting up some type of chess tournament?

I'm up for it, but unlike playing anonymous diplomacy... it is really really easy to cheat at online chess.

I was USCF for a while as 1570. I've been playing amazing chess lately since ive done more webdiplomacy. I think it helps alot

Really, brain? I'm fairly mediocre and easily frustrated at chess but feel I've been fairly quick to catch on to dip.

They are very different games - and in my opinion chess is far more unforgiving of errors (though to a rookie it would seem that way no matter what).
brainbomb (290 D)

Chess is much more capable of allowing a penchant for sacrifice for the sake of positions, and attacks. I have rarely seen someone outgunned in diplomacy be able to go up a war of attrition and come out safely
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
29 Apr 12 UTC
Over the long term, no. But the idea is that if you're outgunned you can find a diplomatic solution before you are destroyed.

We could call it 'The Unforgiving'. Thx Yellow.

If we do organize a chess sideline count me in. I find chess and gunboat to be quite similar

Opening moves aren't as important in Diplomacy, there are over one hundred thousand possible moves after the first move in chess. in Diplomacy you would not often see someone with England move his fleets back to his home centers to have tea, unless he's bored and wants to experiment
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

hey brain I was just studying up on Chess960... I think I would like that more, as some of the main reasons I become annoyed with chess disappear.

What are your thoughts? Just curious, not trying to derail or start a 960 tourney or anything :P
CSteinhardt (9560 D(B))
29 Apr 12 UTC
@brainbomb: In Diplomacy, tactics are generally more important than the number of units. I've certainly defeated larger forces, and sometimes much larger; the main difference is that a small force has a much lower margin for error.
I love chess. I'll play against any of you!
Timur (684 D(B))

Ok. It seems like a buncha people are up for the idea. How can we make it happen?

@patizcool: You good at chess? You socially awkward? Your problem, kiddo.

Although I still play chess for the intellectual exercise, and I agree that 960 is an improvement to original chess (unless by chance variation 518 comes out), starting to play Diplomacy made me feel like a robot when I played chess..

Sorry, been busy... my 6 hour shift turned into a 12 hour shift at work, and then a lot of thesis research, but that's beside the point. People do seem interested in the idea. I know games.com and yahoo both provide live games of chess.

I would assume live games are the only way that would be very fair as computer simulators allow for the 'perfect' move in chess, where as diplomacy has a much more human element that can not be simulated (yet).

I can be good at chess at times. My problem is often times getting caught up in one path and missing an obvious obstacle (1 more move until my queen puts his king in checkmate, his bishop takes my queen as my knight set up the final move). However, when I'm on, I can beat some pretty decent rated players.

Would people want to set up a round robin type thing? Doing an elo rating for whoever wants to do this, I can guarantee, is easier than setting up the GR for webdip lol

There is no strategy for Austria
When Turkey, Italy and Russia attack you there is no strategy to survive. I would even say that if two of the three attack you and there is no third person who tries to ally with you, you just die. Does anyone have a successful history with Austria? its my least favorite starting point because there is basically no hope for a win
