MVP of the NFL
So who's the MVP so far? Aaron Rodgers? Personally, I think its Peyton Manning. I dont think it can be stressed how valuable he is that a team that wins 11 games or more for the past decade cant win a single game without him. What do you guys think?

Programming Suggestion
I would like to see a bit of code added that automatically turned in an order for players who had zero SCs at the beginning of the build phase. Too many times have I seen build phase draw out because the guy who just lost doesn't put in the order for the destruction of his final units. Seems unnecessary.

Cheating
Before anyone bites my head off, I am not naming names nor a particular game -- just wanted to tell the members of the site about an alarming trend, and how two incidents have been handled in divergent ways.

MichiganMan (5121 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
Two GB games in a row now, there has been obvious communication between players as evidenced by excessive and continual coordination between the offending players. Following the games, as usual, I found that two offending players were habitually playing together and uniting. I confronted all four players in private, and along with other players from the games, emailed the mods. I received two responses from the accused players.

The first stated: "He's actually my brother. We are both new to the site, and we wanted to play a few games together. We didn't realise that communicating outside of the game wasn't allowed, so yeah, we were using Skype to talk to each other that game. All I can say is I'm sorry. It was an honest mistake. I've emailed the mods and explained what happened, and asked for them to take the points from us if they can and distribute them to everyone else in the game. And it won't happen again. Neither of us are cheats, it just never occured to either of us that this wouldn't be allowed, which is obviously just stupid of us. Looking back I can't actually believe how naive I was :/ I'm sorry if this ruined that game for you. I'd be happy to give you a fair rematch some day :) Otherwise, please just accept my apology." An honest and contrite response, to which I replied that I accepted his apology. As an aside, I played another GB game with these two gentlemen, and this time they weren't communicating and attacked each other with vigor.

A second response from a different player: "Suck my dick. I have friends, and you don't."

To which I responded: "Having friends is not the point. The point is that you CANNOT communicate with other players in a gunboat game. It is obvious in looking at the game we played that you were communicating -- you two were way too coordinated for a gunboat game. Friends are fine unless you a) communicate in a gb game and/or b) ALWAYS unite with them. BOTH are considered cheating. You've been reported to the Mods...good luck!"

He responded: "if you get me banned i will just register again. i don't care about my stats. i care about my friends.unlike you."

I said: "So you're saying that you're going to keep in CHEATING?!? You're not getting it are you?!? It's not about friends, it's about the honor and integrity of the site. People on here take cheating very seriously. If you play a gb game, you're not supposed to communicate. I have friends that play in here too, you're not supposed to ally with them EVERY time you play. If you do either of those things, you're a cheater."

He said: "yeah i will keep on cheating."

Amazing huh? As I said, I've emailed the Mods about the specific game, as did another player in that game. But, from the sounds of it, this chap is going to register under and new name and continue to undermine games.

Any thoughts?

Don't play open games. Only enter games that are password protected. Choose your opponents.

Anything else is just pointless. There's nothing the mods can do or, rather, nothing they can do about it unless they were paid to constantly monitor players and IP addresses linked to their accounts. So it's pretty much up to us, in the community, to try and avoid those issues. Password protected games are the simplest way we have to do this.
Otherwise, if you want to keep playing open games, I guess that's just a risk you run: there will always be cheaters and I suppose the best you can do is remember that while this is just a game, your attitude towards it is either a point of honour or not.
Cachimbo (1181 D)

I will add:

What Tru said.
MichiganMan (5121 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
Yeah, playing pword protected games is probably the answer. It never ceases to amaze me that people will cheat at something that gets them nothing. I mean, cheat at blackjack, your taxes, on your wife/gf...in all those instances you get SOMETHING -- in here you get nothing but worthless points
TheJok3r (765 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
MichiganMan, I can completely vouch for the character of the people who cheated against you in the one game. The person who apologized to you and claimed his brother, that is 100% accurate. In fact, I looked through his recent games and saw it, and I made him aware of the rules, and had him message the mods immediately.

I can 100% personally vouch that it is not his character to intentionally cheat or play the game to an unfair advantage, and that this was an honest mistake of not being aware of the rules. And neither is it the character of his brother.
MichiganMan (5121 D)

I wish I could do what Tru suggested. Although, I prefer a nice double finger slap to the throat -- it doesn't do any real damage, but makes the poor sap's throat close up for a few seconds (that feel like minutes) and scares the shit of them.

@TheJok3r,
thanks, I too felt very comfortable with his response, and as I said, we played another game together and following its completion, he PMed me immediately and we discussed the game. He and his brother are honorable and welcome new members of the site as far as I am concerned.
TheJok3r (765 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
Excellent. I'm glad this is being handled well. I cant say the same for the other half of the problem. That's just unfortunate that we have people like that on this site.
MichiganMan (5121 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
I too am glad. I was very refreshing to get that response and to know that these guys were not only taking responsibility for their mistake, but showing the respect to the rest of the site to contact the Mods (thanks to you Jok3r) and offer an explanation.
santosh (335 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
I realise this thread is probably not meant to be a psychological analysis of cheating and the motivation behind it, but you might find the link at the end of this interesting. In essence, people succeed by cheating, then they objectively look at their results and conclude they're good at the game (without taking into account that they cheated), and so keep playing and cheating.

Complete experiment and write up are here -

@MM, If you were to communicate with the second player again, I would suggest discussing how cheating really only cheats oneself. After all, what did this asshat prove by cheating? That he and his friends were superior at diplomacy? Nope. As far as we can tell they can only succeed by cheating, so if anything they have proven themselves inferior. And if they did it because they enjoy fucking other people up, then that is very sad that that is the only way they can get enjoyment. Either way the second player is quite pitiable. Not much more than a worm really. Sad indeed.
TheJok3r (765 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
+1 Alderian. Very well said and agreed on all accounts.
MichiganMan (5121 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
@Alderian, I've basically said that to him and told him that I feel sorry for him. I will say that there is a bit of satisfaction in to be able to force a draw with the cheaters despite them having all the advantages that come with communicating in a GB game.
virtuslatin (130 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
The issue with passworded games is that relative newbies can't establish their reputation, because they cant get the password. I am doing the best I can to play in games and start making one, but until then, I would be SOL if all games were password protected.

Just to throw this out there, the mods should be able to block access to someone repeatedly making new account.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
06 Dec 11 UTC
I've found that different types of games on this site are more likely to attract cheaters than others.

For instance, live games are more likely to have cheaters than long games.

Gunboat are more likely to have cheaters than full-press.

In sum ways, this is good, because it means the games closest to the real game of diplomacy (full press, 20 min) have the fewest cheaters.

However, there is no doubt that live gunboat games are really hit-or-miss.

When I started on this site, I quickly became active in the forum, allowing me to join high-level games much sooner. I constantly got crushed, but I was at least playing with good people. Make yourself known on the forum, and you may find a surprising number of people willing to play with you.

How would we do such a thing? We can do IP bans, but we rarely do because it could prevent an innocent person from accessing the site.

@virtus - I suggest getting into the 50CC or 150CC clubs then.
virtuslatin (130 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
@Draug: In 50cc, and even run some games. 150cc is somewhat defunct, and I am too new (and too unlucky) to be in. I have played a few gunboats here, but so far they have either been multiCD games, or I have been the lucky pierre Austria in the middle of an aggressive TRI. But I do like the community, so I will be around for a while and hope to show my mettle for 150cc eventually. And thanks again.
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Dec 11 UTC
@virtus - The nice thing about 48 hour games is it's only every other day so you can do your diploming in the evening and on weekends. You could even do 72 hours and get some interested parties (I'd play that too).

@abge, like you just said, ban traffic from an ip address.
Mr_rb (594 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
I just try to be careful about it.. check the players history before joining a non-anon game, and check the times of when people join the game in anonymous games. For example, yesterday I was in an anonymous game, waiting for 3 more people to join. Then 2 players joined in exactly the same minute- that's enough reason for me to try it somewhere else.

santosh (335 D)

@jmo There might be other people on the same subnet, or the ISP may be using a proxy so it may have only a few IP addresses for a lot of people. You might end up banning innocent people.
virtuslatin (130 D)
06 Dec 11 UTC
@ John the brown: 50cc is an open live game club, with one rule: Don't CD and draw if there is a CD at any point in the game. I am setting up a game this afternoon and will PM you.

50cc was modeled on 150cc, which was a group of 'better' live game players who would organize games only for members--promising better quality and no CDs. It is somewhat defunct, but was organized by Damien, Sargmarcher, and one other. Damien states that it should be making a comeback soon.

Listen, guys, we have had people who claim that they'll just reregister and cheat, yet there are no stories about that ever really happening, right?

I think the mods may have it under control.
Quit listening to the threats of cheaters and trolls. If he's so worried about his friends, maybe he should get off the computer and actually play f2f with them. We'll make sure to make it easier for him to play f2f instead of webdip if he tries to reregister, k? ;)

Banning IP doesn't really work. Especially if we are talking about someone that is likely (but not necessarily) younger. Just find a different computer at school (middle school, high school, or college) or go to the library or local coffee shop with free internet or wherever. Do smart phones keep the same IP addresses when they move around? And even if you ban their home computer's IP address, there are ways to get assigned a new one.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
06 Dec 11 UTC
And of course there are free proxies. Easy. But I have yet t find one that supports Javascript so I can't start using it.

A gunboat variant where you could see who had joined but did not know who played each country. That would allow you to screen who you played with and could avoid obvious cheating red flags. Just a thought.
