The Euro Crises Explained
<See inside>
Some years ago a small rural town in Spain twinned with a similar town in
Greece.
The Mayor of the Greek town visited the Spanish town.
When he saw the palatial mansion belonging to the Spanish mayor he wondered how he could afford such a house.
The Spaniard said; "You see that bridge over there? The EU gave us a grant to build a two-lane bridge, but by building a single lane bridge with traffic lights at either end this house could be built".

The following year the Spaniard visited the Greek town.
He was simply amazed at the Greek Mayor's house, gold taps, marble floors, it was marvellous. When he asked how this could be afforded the

Greek said; "You see that bridge over there?"
The Spaniard replied; "No."

I presume this is a made-up story, not a real example? Otherwise, go ahead and name the towns involved and the EU body that gave them grants to build bridges.

Most EU grant programmes such as the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) actually subject the recipients of their grants to pretty strict auditing procedures. I know this at first hand - I work for a local council in the UK that has recieved grants of this nature. There is no way we would have been able to get away with spending even a fraction of the grant money on gold taps for the mayor's house...

@Jamie - It's called a joke, oh humorless one...

SpeakerToAliens: Oh, come on. I'm Spanish and was looking for a real explanation/solution when I clicked on this thread, not this baloney.

Draugnar: Yes, I realize it's a joke.

It's a nice joke.

The answer, JECE, I believe: the incompetence of all of our leaders.

"Any people gets the leadership it deserves"

The answer is politicians realizing they can buy votes with promises and then realizing they need to fulfill those promises to stay in power and that leading to benefits that the people expect but really can't be sustained long term and the longer they try to sustain them the deeper the hole.

For all I know that isn't the problem in the EU. But it is the problem in the US.

Should +1 bump a thread?
In light of all the new uses for the +1 feature, should it also bump a thread? The con would be that the front page would have threads without new replies while new replies might be buried. Thoughts?

A Tribute to Mr. Calhamer
Draugnar pointed out that this is the creator of Diplomacy's 80th birthday coming up this December 7th and I've got an idea on how we can say thanks in a way that shows him just how many and how far his game has captured across the world.

Hypothetical move
Let's assume that St. Petersburg is surrounded. Norway and Finland are going to support Barents Sea in. Armies in Livonia and Moscow could support the hold in St. Pete's, but a German army may cut Livonian support. If St. Petersburg hits Norway to cut support, and Moscow supports Livonia into St. petetersburg, would everyone bounce?

Weird glitch.
I imputed my orders. And none of them went through. Does this happen often. It has caused me to drastically change a game that I was winning.

What to do?
I am also playing on another Dip site that shall remain nameless and have noticed from looking at game history that 2 of the players in my game almost always play together and seem to always be allies. What should I do?

Are discussions of banned players allowed on the forum?
Obviously cheating accusations aren't, but I seem to recall hearing that we're allowed to discuss players banned for cheating openly, and I'm curious as to the story behind some of the recently-banned players... seems like some familiar names are out.
