Should +1 bump a thread?
In light of all the new uses for the +1 feature, should it also bump a thread? The con would be that the front page would have threads without new replies while new replies might be buried. Thoughts?

A Tribute to Mr. Calhamer
Draugnar pointed out that this is the creator of Diplomacy's 80th birthday coming up this December 7th and I've got an idea on how we can say thanks in a way that shows him just how many and how far his game has captured across the world.

Hypothetical move
Let's assume that St. Petersburg is surrounded. Norway and Finland are going to support Barents Sea in. Armies in Livonia and Moscow could support the hold in St. Pete's, but a German army may cut Livonian support. If St. Petersburg hits Norway to cut support, and Moscow supports Livonia into St. petetersburg, would everyone bounce?

Are discussions of banned players allowed on the forum?
Obviously cheating accusations aren't, but I seem to recall hearing that we're allowed to discuss players banned for cheating openly, and I'm curious as to the story behind some of the recently-banned players... seems like some familiar names are out.

PHP Help
PHP/SQL database construction
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
14 Nov 11 UTC
I need some help on a final project for a PHP/SQL class. I need to create a web database connected to an SQL database that enables querying, updating, adding, deletion of records, etc. from the database. My project is pretty basic: an online database of baseball statistics for players on a team that lets the user add players, update player records, view team stats, and a few other queries.

I've constructed my database and made my rough draft of the homepage in html. The next step, though, is creating PHP forms through the HTML homepage that creates SQL commands to carry out the queries mentioned above.

First page I'm trying to make is an SQL Insert command. Is there anyone well versed in PHP/SQL that would be willing to help a bit?

We have developers here. I'm a Java architect... I can run SQL commands and can probably tell you the errors in your code if you want to post them...
please note, though, that we will steer you in the right direction, but will not be doing your project for you.

Be more specific, I might be able to help.

Or just use Drupal ;)
Draugnar (0 DX)

First SQL is SQL. there is no PHP/SQL. There is MS Transact-SQL or another flavor of SQL based on the SQL server in question, but PHP is not a SQL server and doesn't have a distinct flavor of SQL.

Second, if your SQL platform allows them, use stored procedures. They are independent of the PHP and makes the PHP calls (or the .Net calls) that much easier and secure.

And as fortknox pointed out, we can help mentor you but we won't do it for you.

I can provide solid help with the SQL, but my PHP is a bit (ok *a lot*) weak.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

there are loads of php to SQL security issues which may also appear as bugs if you don't account for them.

but a basic system seems pretty easy.

@Draug, i didn't know baout SQL stored procedures, show my fragmented learning i guess.

do you know if MySQL has the same functionality?

My assignment is to access an online database using SQL in PHP. My main problem exists with creating SQL queries to access and change the database. For example, my "insert" functions don't insert and returns an SQL syntax error message. The (very) rough draft of my website is here, I haven't done much with the CSS and layouts yet, so it's in a very raw form:

http://tomscudder.netai.net/Final/StatsHome.html

My one query that is actually working is "view team stats," where a statistic is selected and the result is a list of players on the team and the associated number for that statistic, but that's a fairly easy query to run since nothing is being added or changed. Insert and update functions are proving to be tricky for me.

And just to clarify, this is a grad school final project, so I would never expect anyone to "do it for me." Not that I would want that anyway, I need to know the proper skills on how to create, access, and change SQL databases.

Sounds like you need a primer in SQL if your INSERT statement is throwing an error. That or your security permisisons are all messed up.
fortknox (2059 D)

give us your insert statement and we'll tell you what's wrong.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))

I've created successful INSERTs before, but the issue I'm having is creating the INSERT entry in a separate form and getting those user-generated names and numbers into the SQL database. For example, when I write the INSERT statement myself in mySQL, everything works. My problems are arising when I try to create a PHP form in which the user can manually enter names and statistics to insert a new record into the database, which keeps kicking back syntax errors.

or another common mistake is that one tries to execute more than 1 query via mysql_query (or using the mysqli library)

cool stuff, thanks draug.

@2ndWL, i've failed many times at going from php to SQL, mostly because of stupid syntax errors, and because i never learned SQL in the first place so was making it up... just echo the SQL query before calling it, to see what it says. (or store it to be echoed later...) it's probably poor practice compared to proper php debugging, but it may be faster if you're not planning to do things properly...

I'm sure my professor would like the code correct, but thanks for some of the links. I'm still trying to figure out why I can't get terms from PHP forms to SQL commands using POST or GET commands. ($term, etc.)
mittag (391 D)
16 Nov 11 UTC
register_globals are nowadays off (or should be). You can get those using the superglobals (always present in each scope) $_GET['term'], $_POST['term'] etc

Another thing you can to better debug PHP/MySQL is to make a wrapper function for query. In that function you call mysql_query and after that call mysql_error() to see an error happened. If so display that error message + query and die else return what mysql_query returned.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

post and get may have some security arrangements which alter your data between submitting them and using them as a query.

and make sure you check each step of the way...

i recall many little issues like this, apart from the annoyance of writing your database queries in php...
fortknox (2059 D)

make sure you commit your transaction, as well...
Draugnar (0 DX)

And double check to see if the variables in the request are encoded and check the lengths of any VarChars/strings. Encoding could cause a problem with numeric, boolean, and date fields or make the length exceed the varchar fields defined maximum length.

And one more thing to check. Be sure to remember the "'" around any string information you are sending up to the SQL when you build your query string.
