Writing a book
Has anyone here written a book? Once I finish another project I am working on, I am mulling over writing a biography of a secondary figure from the early American Republic. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with publishing a manuscript before.

Spending, deficits, and debt
Federal spending has grown from 20.7 percent of gross domestic product in 2008 to 25.3 percent last year, its largest share since the end of World War II

Federal spending for fiscal year 2011, at $3.6 trillion, is still up 4 percent over 2010. And the president is seriously trying to force through a $447 billion stimulus 2.0.

Unemployment in January 2009 was 7.8%
All of this deficit spending and additional debt resulted in unemployment reaching 10.1% at its peak and remaining at 9% and above ever since.

Fact-In 2010, all tax revenue collected by the Internal Revenue Service went to paying interest on the debt and mandatory payments.
Every single dime in the stimulus package and all other discretionary spending in 2010 was borrowed, with half of the borrowing from foreign nations.
2010 replicated the horrendous practices of socialist European governments and is fiscally unsustainable.
Just look at Greece.
All democratic governments *everywhere* spend every penny they can get their hands on buying the next election. To them *any* other consideration is secondary (regardless of what they might tell the electorate).

If the Euro nations had stuck to the borrowing rules (3% GDP per year, 60% total) they wouldn't be in the mess they're in now. But they all saw what was happening, what the others were doing, and they all kept their mouths shut because they were shovelling money into securing their re-election as fast as possible too. If somebody had stood up and said something the party would have been over for all of them, and they couldn't have that.

The money that they spend on the next election in the United States comes from private sources and doesn't contribute to the national debt though.
The policies politicians enact to get reelected does contribute to the national debt and the crisis just as you say.

Gross Federal Debt Debt Held by Public
FY 2012 $16.7 trillion $10.8 trillion
FY 2011 $15.5 trillion $9.9 trillion
FY 2010 $13.5 trillion $8.2 trillion
FY 2009 $11.9 trillion $6.8 trillion
FY 2008 $10.0 trillion $5.3 trillion
Gross Federal Debt is the total debt owed by the United States federal government. It comprises “debt held by the public” and “debt held by federal government accounts,” such as IOUs owed to the Social Security trust fund. “Debt held by the public” includes debt actually held by the public and foreign governments, and also debt held by the Federal Reserve System, i.e., monetized as part of the monetary base.

Use National Deficit rather then Federal, the number is higher so it makes the situation sound worse...

Rule question! Retreat edition!
Just looking for a quick reminder (I'm still working the rust out of my long absence). If Austria's Vienna Army supports its Army in Bohemia to Tyrolia and Italy moves its Tyrolia army to Bohemia, can an Austrian Army dislodged from Silesia retreat to Bohemia?

If i have missed anyone out - apologies-oh and i wont say there are lots of "blow outs" as everytime someone says that on here, something weird happens like the Rams beating the Saints!

A couple of questions about American courts.
In the UK, when a jury has a verdict the judge asks them what the verdict is and they say it out loud. In the 'States, once a jury reaches a verdict, they write it down on a piece of paper and hand it to the judge, He or she reads it and then hands it back and someone in the jury reads it out.

Why do they hand it to the judge first? What does this achieve?

Since there are so many well-read, historically-minded, opinionated members on the site, I thought it might be fun to read and discuss a book with anyone who is interested.

The Biggest Threat To Liberty is _____ (?)
I say a Lack of Education:
It was with more education we got out of the Stone Ages and into the Greco-Roman era...and then when education made a comeback, we had the Renaissance...and then the Englightenment...and then Civil Rights/Suffrage movements...cured diseases, more production...but currently my home state is 48th in education and the West is most of my doctors ARE from India...what's your take? Biggest threat is...what?

Probably not new game play idea, maybe for tourneys
Is there a tourney here that we could do a Triple vs Triple deal with a rogue Italy? I think if we have enough players that would be a fun thing to do. I think best would be 7 players or 49. Could be fun. Let me know if anyone is interested or has a way to make it a better idea.
