Can anyone defend freedom?
Can anyone defend the idea that "people" can produce a better society by diminishing governmental control in exchange for increased libertarian imposition of civil freedoms on the government?

Are no-hitters not a big deal anymore?
When guys like Ervin Santana can get one and we've had something like 10 in the past 2 seasons are no hitters going to become passe?

Also, what the heck is La Russa's major malfunction?

Account sitting.
I'll be out of town for four or five days, and I'm not sure what to do. I'm pretty new to this site so I'm not sure how it works, but I've seen people mention 'account sitting'? How does that work? What are the rules? How do I find someone to do that for me? I guess I'm just looking for a general explanation. Thanks in advance. Oh, and sorry if this is explained elsewhere on the site. Perhaps I missed it when I looked.

How Much Is Everyone Muting?
I ask becuase I see folks saying they're muting folks in threads more and more...and it just seems like a shame and almost unfair to me, really...granted I'm probably one of the most-muted on the site--at least I would guess I am--but even so, all the more reason I just can't mute anyone..."if you can't stand the heat"...? You can't have it both ways, give a critical opinion and erect a shield to deflect all criticism, even if that "criticism" is a foolish troll, yes?

An Education in Economics
Liberals have the mistaken and baseless idea that government creates jobs, that government creates demand that stimulates the economy, and that any time there is a great reduction in government spending a recession will result.

Looking for sitter
I'll be away for 5-6 days next week and still have a couple games running. It shouldn't be too huge of a time commitment if anyone is willing, since one is a 4 day phase world game in which I have only a single unit. The other is a game in the summer gunboat tournament, so someone not part of that would be preferred.
I hope I'm not asking too much with only a few days notice, but if someone with a good reputation would PM me saying they can, I would be extremely grateful.

Pizza v. Tacos
Let's say there is a pizza joint and a taco stand right across the street from each other...
Darwyn (1601 D)
27 Jul 11 UTC
Every day after work the people who like pizza eat at the pizza joint and the people who like tacos eat at the taco stand.

But let's say that while you are sitting enjoying your pizza someone walks in through the door and starts complaining about pizzas and extolling the virtues of tacos.

Would you be very suspicious of the motives of a professed taco lover standing in the middle of your pizza joint insulting pizza eaters?

Probably.

But, would you suspect that the professed taco lover standing in the middle of your pizza joint insulting pizza eaters is secretly working for the taco stand?

cui bono? Who benefits from a taco lover badmouthing pizza lovers?

The taco stand owner, of course.

how about you give us the great reveal already and stop talking about tacos
whats the conspiracy this time?
TrustMe (106 D)
27 Jul 11 UTC
Unless... it gets out that the Taco stand owner is trying to sabotage the Pizza joint and then the taco eaters realize what bad form it is to bad mouth pizza, since they kinda like pizza too. So they all go to the Pizza joint and no one eats tacos. So maybe the Pizza joint set this all up...
TrustMe (106 D)
27 Jul 11 UTC
So maybe we should all just ignore the taco lover badmouthing pizza lovers and eat whatever we want.
Jack_Klein (897 D)

I would answer this by demanding a taco pizza.

I'd see if the taco lover had any tacos on him, then beat the crap out of him, steal his tacos, and go have a good international meal of pizza *and* tacos.
Draugnar (0 DX)
27 Jul 11 UTC
Oh, and I'd have to have them with a big ol' pitcher of iced sweet tea (artificially sweetend, unfortunately) to add a desidedly Southern US flair to my international feast.
krellin (80 DX)
27 Jul 11 UTC
Come on, we all know that both the pizza joint and the taco stands are part of the same multi-national and that the whole thing is staged simply to generate press. The multi-national knows that every time the news comes on, they will show photos and video of people licking delicious greasy goop from their fingers...and thus the mutli-national will use the willing, but ignorant, media to get some more free advertising.

And, since they also own the hot-dog stand, they clearly aren't concerned inf anyone is turned off by the whole event.

My wife runs a store and has had a competitor post on craigs list as if they were just an average consumer, asking about my wife's store and then starting to bash it. Thankfully karma was good and they are out of business while my wife is not. Do I have proof it was the competitor? No. But they were just making stuff up so I strongly believe it.

So yes, I would suspect that the person badmouthing the pizza place was somehow associated with the taco place.

OR, that the person really likes pizza, but not how busy it is and wants shorter lines.

"I would suspect that the person badmouthing the pizza place was somehow associated with the taco place."

I agree. At minimum, it is a safe assumption to move forward with.
Maybe the taco-lover is actually an employee of the pizza place that is causing a ruckus in order to convince people that taco-lovers are terrible people and the taco joint must be terrible if that is the average customer. Just a thought.
Darwyn (1601 D)
28 Jul 11 UTC
that sounds like there's one two many steps in logic for that to be considered Shock.

The intention of the taco-lover is clear...to get pizza-lovers to hate pizza so that they can start loving tacos.
gigantor (404 D)
28 Jul 11 UTC
Going a little off-topic here, but surely bad-mouthing pizza wouldn't be the best way to do it, if he indeed wanted to get people to stop liking pizza and start liking tacos. Sure, talking up tacos would help his cause, but insulting the very people he's trying to convince must be somewhat of a hinderance.

Insulting your opponent *is* the American way, is it not? Let's see, Obama says the Republicans are idiots, but never puts up his own plan. The candidates with the most negative ads wins. etc. You get the point. It may not be the most effective, but it's our way.

Let's pretend I'm a Republican. Yee-haw. (no, I'm not American either) Obama says, "Hey that dude you like is an idiot who's going to ruin the economy." I get annoyed because I like that dude that I like, mumble (or yell) some expletives and go home to eat corn and talk about how I hate Obama even more than I did yesterday.

I just don't get how that works as a political strategy! (apologies to all the folks I surely offended during this post)

Hysteria & Welfare State Bankruptcy
In the current budget debate you see two viewpoints-the House of Representatives realizes the Welfare State is bankrupt with $200 Trillion in deficits and unfunded liabilities. The Obama administration and the Senate think everything will be fine if they raise taxes and keep pumping devalued dollars into the economy.

gunboats are stupid and ruin diplomacy
the point of diplomacy is exactly what it says. DIPLOMACY. When we get rid of ingame messaging it does away with the crucial factor of diplomacy and results in no improvement of luck. It actually makes the game far more random and chancy than it should be. I believe that we need to get rid of this option to allow DIPLOMACY to take its course. Please add your comments about this.
