Can anyone defend the idea that "people" can produce a better society by diminishing governmental control in exchange for increased libertarian imposition of civil freedoms on the government?

Are no-hitters not a big deal anymore?
When guys like Ervin Santana can get one and we've had something like 10 in the past 2 seasons are no hitters going to become passe?

Also, what the heck is La Russa's major malfunction?

HEY!

*I* happen to love baseball! (Then again, I also drink tea and all my favorite literature and music comes from old white dead guys so I'm already an old fart at heart, quite probably...BUT STILL!) ;)

And NO! the no-hitter isn't blase yet...

*MY* team has still yet to pitch one, 50 eyars into existence!

We've had some of the best pitchers of trhe last 50 years play for us, countless 1-hitters...

WHY CAN'T MY METS EVER GET THAT NO-HITTER?!?! (Oh, right...they're the Mets. Well...at least they won today!) :)

Hey Obi, think we should trade Reyes? I know he's having a great year and all, but we're broke.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
28 Jul 11 UTC
And I'm glad to see dominant pitching back and 609-70 HR seasons by steroid freaks gone now...

I can almost look at the numbers and believe them once more...or at least more than I could ten years ago (sorry, Barry Bonds--NO ONE at 37 grows tens of pounds and plenty of hat sizes all of the sudden and hits 73 HRs...sorry.)
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
28 Jul 11 UTC
NO! We've already traded K-Rod and Beltran, which is fine, but the Mets mde those moves in part because they want to be able to affor Reyes...

He's PERFECT for Citi Field! He's a gap hitter with great speed and average, so in spcacious Citi Field, he can get a ton of lead-off doubels and triples, like he's done this year.

Trade Wright before Reyes, he MUSTs tay (though I'd like to see the two stay together, and I think they'll be able to, Wright's contract's not up until next year, and the new 49% owner Einhorn is bringing in new moeny, so with that and the contractss for Ollie Perez, K-Rod, Beltran, and Luis Castillo off the books, there should be enough to keep Reyes and Wright...

And that's going to be a GREAT linuep!

Thole, Ike, Turner, Reyes, and Wright is a great infield, all home-grown talent...

And then send Daniel Murphy to play RF, he can handle it, or send him to play 2B, eitehr way, his bat;s so good we HAVe to keep him...Pagan's decent...the only dud is Bay.
Putin33 (111 D)
28 Jul 11 UTC
They can't trade Wright. For 1 - the fan base would go nuts. Wright loves the Mets and is the heart and soul of the franchise. It'd be like David Cone all over again. 2-His contract only really allows the Mets to give him to a team for a year in 2012, then he'd be a free agent again. I don't think we'd get full value for him. Reyes on the other hand is another matter.

It's going to be an era of pitcher's dominance now that the MLB is starting to really crack down on steroid use. Collective league ERA's are lower, BAA's are lower, HR's are lower.

Don't blame La Russa (or Mozeliak for that matter). AA is a god of a GM. He's playing chess while the other GMs play checkers.

The average number of no hitters since 1875 is two per season with 3 so far this year. But last year saw 6 while 09 and 08 saw 2 each and 07 saw 3.

But this is my favorite no-hitter if just because it was a loss to Cincinnati and Pete Rose scored the winning run. April 23, 1964 - Ken Johnson of the Colt .45s pitched a no hitter but lost in the 9th inning to the Reds when Pete Rose scored on two errors separated by a ground out. And that isn't the only no hitter that was still a loss for the pitching staff.

La Russa ran Rasmus out of town because he wouldn't kiss La Russa (and his worthless roided up hitting coach's) ring. Toronto got a great pick up.
the mets still don't have one, im sure when they do they'll lose 1-0 in 14 innings.

Perfection will never cease to be a big deal to those that wish to succeed in life.

OK....damn me to hell....I can't help myself. OK....if a pitcher pitches a no-hitter, he receives great praise and rewards (future contracts are boosted, etc.) I think even Putin can agree to this, as I see he is a fan. And yet, if a corporation succeeds, and is the best at what they do, and as a result they make gobs of money....people want to tear them down and steal their wealth, instead of rewarding them. What is the difference??? I am *not* trying to be a troll....I truly want to understand the viewpoint of someone like Putin who hates corporations, but apparently doesn't mind awarding individual achievement (even though it is mostly the random luck of genetics that provided the skills....)
the mets need to trade Reyes he's going to want to be the highest paid player in baseball, the mets cant afford him especially concidering his injury history and his propensity to play hard only in his contract year. Trade him at peak value, get a windfall of prospects and draft picks, and let tejada show what he can do. Use the money saved from Beltran K-Rod and Reyes to get 2 pitchers and 2 Position players.
thts how you build a dynasty of the future IMO, and all you are going to lose is a few months service on a lost season.
actually I just realized while I was preparing for this job interview tomorrow, the mets have won 4 straight, that might change things. Only 7 back from the wild card.

I'm on the fence about wanting the Jays to go after Reyes in the off-season. He seems like the kind of guy to overachieve in a contract year

I can't speak for Putin, only myself, and I have a less extreme view.

I don't mind corporations in general, but there are corporations that are unethical in their dealings, moreso than most. I dislike unethical ballplayers and root against them, and I avoid doing business with those corporations whose ethics I disagree with, and I will publicly decry them and their,,,

Oh, who am I kidding. No matter how much McDonald's deforests the Amazon, I fucking love Filet O Fish. But I have managed to not do any business with WalMart for about ten years, and it took a year after the spill for me to use BP again. And I love Pete Rose, but that's not an ethical issue I take seriously, gambling.
Tony La Russa is one of the worst managers in the history of baseball. He frequently plays players out of their natural positions, plays matchups more than necessary and ignores platoon splits while doing so, runs good players like Rasmus/Rolen/Drew out of town due to terrible player management skills, orders bunts, is responsible for the current exclusive use of closers in save situations rather than using the best possible relievers in high leverage situations, and is a tea partier.

Also the Blue Jays should go after Albert Pujols. >:)

@Santa and Putin:

If they wanted to trade Reyes, the WOULD have moved him by now...they parted with two major pieces in Beltran and K-Rod, and Reyes was the talk of trade rumors all year, so if he was going to be traded, he'd have gone by now.

Reyes wants a lot of money, but also has made it clear he'd like to stay with the Mets and David Wright, if he can, since the two are friends and Citi Field might as well be called Reyes Field for as much as he owns that park.

He's EXACTLY the kind of player that Citi was built for...and he knows it and they know it, so if they trade him, it'll just mean they have to go out and get another Reyes or wait a few years and hope another emerges...they have their franchise player NOW, and it's thusly cheaper and more logical to trade others around him in order to pay for hm rather than sell him off only to pay for another Reyes someday.

I don't buyn that they can't keep Reyes--the contracts for Ollie, Castillo, Beltran, and K-Rod are all off the books, now...that frees up a lot more moeny for them to committ to Reyes...

And finally, the Mets KNOW they aren't drawing ANYONE to watch them play without Reyes...so if you trade him to save money, you're really losing it, as attendance will crash and BURN.

The Mets need Reyes.
Reyes needs Citi.

They can work it out, especially with that new moeny coming off the books and the new minority owner bringing in fresh money.

Moeny troubles or no, it's a NYC franchise, they WILL make money, and they CAN afford to keep their big moneymaker, Jose Reyes.
Not true at all. Reyes could still go, there are 3 days to go and many blockbuster deals are done at the deadline. They know they have an extremely valuable commodity in Reyes and they could be waiting for the right offer. The fact he isnt gone yet means nothing but the mets are not as stupid as they once were.

"Reyes wants a lot of money, but also has made it clear he'd like to stay with the Mets and David Wright, if he can, since the two are friends and Citi Field might as well be called Reyes Field for as much as he owns that park."

You mean when he isnt injured for half the year or hitting 70 D below what he is now when it isnt a contract year

"He's EXACTLY the kind of player that Citi was built for...and he knows it and they know it, so if they trade him, it'll just mean they have to go out and get another Reyes or wait a few years and hope another emerges...they have their franchise player NOW, and it's thusly cheaper and more logical to trade others around him in order to pay for hm rather than sell him off only to pay for another Reyes someday."

How can you call someone a franchise player who has missed so many games? He makes his living on his legs, and his legs have shown they might not be able to keep up.

"I don't buyn that they can't keep Reyes--the contracts for Ollie, Castillo, Beltran, and K-Rod are all off the books, now...that frees up a lot more moeny for them to committ to Reyes..."

Or 3 other players and the top flight prospects you will get for him.

Haha well I'm a Cardinals fan, and to be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about the Rasmus trade yet. I liked Colby Rasmus and thought he had a lot of potential, but this year he seemed like a bust. Obviously its only his second year in the majors, but I was expecting a lot from him. I just wished we would have gotten a decent reliever instead of another starter.

As for La Russa driving out Rolen and Drew, I agree that Rolen was an especially bad move, but Drew I wasn't as concerned with.

Also, If the Cardinals can't resign Albert Pujols everybody in our front office should be fired.
Yonni (136 D(S))

"I just wished we would have gotten a decent reliever instead of another starter.

Zach, you'll be pleasantly surprised by Zep. He's a good young reliever that you have under control for another couple of years. He's no Carpenter (still sour about that one) but he'll be a loss for the Jays.
Putin33 (111 D)
29 Jul 11 UTC
In Rasmus's defense, he was moved around in the line up and benched a lot. Hard to come back from a slump under such conditions. Plus the season is far from over.

Krellin, how the hell do you manage to politicize a thread about no hitters? Every month you seem perplexed about the same issue, this idea that socialism doesn't reward effort or achievement. Again I say, why is the AK-47 named after its inventor, and why aren't American inventions named after theirs?

"Successful" corporations are cheats. Most of the most successful ones are good at cost cutting, exploiting cheap labor, and getting around anti-trust violations. That's nothing to celebrate, and a huge portion of them don't pay taxes due to loopholes.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
29 Jul 11 UTC
It's a misconception Reyes misses a lot of games:

Last year, 133 or so out of 162...

And the other years he's pretty fine as well, 100+ tallys...

He's only had one major injury and one lost season--2009, only 39 games--since his start in 2003.

I'll be out of town for four or five days, and I'm not sure what to do. I'm pretty new to this site so I'm not sure how it works, but I've seen people mention 'account sitting'? How does that work? What are the rules? How do I find someone to do that for me? I guess I'm just looking for a general explanation. Thanks in advance. Oh, and sorry if this is explained elsewhere on the site. I ask becuase I see folks saying they're muting folks in threads more and more...and it just seems like a shame and almost unfair to me, really...granted I'm probably one of the most-muted on the site--at least I would guess I am--but even so, all the more reason I just can't mute anyone..."if you can't stand the heat"...? You can't have it both ways, give a critical opinion and erect a shield to deflect all criticism, even if that "criticism" is a foolish troll, yes?

Looking for sitter
I'll be away for 5-6 days next week and still have a couple games running. It shouldn't be too huge of a time commitment if anyone is willing, since one is a 4 day phase world game in which I have only a single unit. The other is a game in the summer gunboat tournament, so someone not part of that would be preferred.
I hope I'm not asking too much with only a few days notice, but if someone with a good reputation would PM me saying they can, I would be extremely grateful.

the point of diplomacy is exactly what it says. DIPLOMACY. When we get rid of ingame messaging it does away with the crucial factor of diplomacy and results in no improvement of luck. It actually makes the game far more random and chancy than it should be. I believe that we need to get rid of this option to allow DIPLOMACY to take its course. Please add your comments about this.
