Punishing leaves
I'm sure the following might not be taken well by some, but I just wanted to make some general comments on leavers. I think there needs to be a system through which players who leave consistently are punished. Now with non-anon games that isn't as much a problem if people considering joining a game look at the people who have already joined, and what their leave percent is.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Wanted--President/Prime Minister: Qualities: ...?
After a couple weeks of theological debate and bunk--and because I've just become completely enamored with "The West Wing"...yeah, it's an "old" show at5+ years, but I was too young to care when it first aired--we swing back to the political side here, and ask a simple question: what is desirable and/or needed in a modern world leader (disclaimer: This is NOT about the race, so please leave fights about Obama, Bachmann, etc., for another thread.)

Public Press Game for the Long Winded
I'm looking for six mature players who know how to write to join a friendly public press game. More details inside.
Geofram (130 D(B))
17 Jul 11 UTC
I’ve joined games that promised a lot of press before and have been thoroughly disappointed. I know that there are players out there that can never seem to write enough, I’ve just never been in a game with them all at once.

So I ask you to join me in a two-day per phase game of words and require a promise to make all attempts at grammar, punctuation, and spelling. If you’re the aspiring novelist, this game is for you. Leave the flame wars at home, we’re here to be civil, the nature of public press allows everything to be open and acknowledged.

We’re here to read what you’ve got to say and be convinced by your eloquence. If you would like the password, just post here convincing me that you’re prepared to say: “I hereby promise to write much and read all.”

Dearest Geofram,

I do enjoy to talk. This somehow carries over to enjoying to type. I check the site several times a day, and I'm often disappointed in how little other individuals message me, which kind of atrophies my in game message count. I would adore playing in a game where everyone talks quite a bit, unfortunately, points are at a bit of a premium for me lately. Perhaps later.
Geofram (130 D(B))
17 Jul 11 UTC
Alas, you have squandered all your points in inferior games. Should no other scribe wish to take up the mantle before you've recovered your wealth, the honour would be mine to extend you an invitation to fill our seventh seat.

I do hereby promise to undertake to write much and read all. No representations are made regarding quality, however, as that would be prideful. First topic: If we say we are not proud, is that the surest evidence of pride?? :-)

While I would certainly qualify (8000 messages in 40 games), I'm a bit consumed currently. Geo, it's a great concept and I wish you success. I think you might find that there are struggling artists who don't have your resources, and you should consider changing the game fee to 5 D, allowing all 5 players who have thus far responded, to sign up. Good luck!

Well, if you are asking for preferences, then 36 hours or less, whatever buy in, annon, and all messaging. don't play gunbboat and would rather ppsc as I think it makes for a more real game, but will play wta as that seems to be what the real players play.

Dear Geofram,

I would love to join your game, but fear that I am forbidden from doing so. You see, what you have written so strikes a chord that I feel we must be either two parts of the same co-joined twins separated at birth or we may indeed be the same person who has multiple identities. Either way I think being two sides of the same coin (or perhaps I am Ying to your Yang) would cause the others to cry 'MULTI'. If you fthink they can overlook our apparent telepathy then please add me to your list.

Regards

Maniac

@Indy

So sad you won't be joining us. We all go through writer's block, its nothing to be ashamed over. Call us when the cogs are turning again and we'll see about another round. =P

@Pete
If you're up to the challenge, welcome aboard. The phase is two days, plenty of time for you to bookmark webster.com! In all seriousness, don't be frugal with your words. I can't speak for everyone, but as this is public press, I need to be impressed! I think you're up for the challenge, so welcome aboard.

@Maniac

I promise to wear my aluminium hat if you do! I'm glad you like the idea and think you would be an excellent addition to the wordsmith arena.

Passwords sent to you both!

great idea. i'm a new player, and i was in a public-only game recently that, for the first time, had some serious press. i wasn't aware of the concept but i was really getting into being Sultan Mehmed, until we had to shut the game due to multis.

i'm in, if you'll have me

Dearest fellow diplomats,

It seems that another game I am currently embroiled in may very well end in a draw by the end of this glorious day. If you happen to notice my points spike up to the necessary level, I implore you to PM me the password in due haste. Thank you.

Cachimbo (1181 D)
18 Jul 11 UTC
(I just realized that I voiced my desire to be part of this game in very few words. I'm only hoping that it will not be held against me! If you guys need to verify that I can be loquacious, I think that the 2650 in game messages in just 20 games should be a good sign that I love to chat!)
JesusPetry (258 D)

One of the most fun games, if not the most fun one that I've ever played, was a Public Press one. Please send me the password and I'll join and write a lot. I also like that this one is WTA!
JesusPetry (258 D)

And don't be fooled by my message count, it's just that I play a lot of gunboats.

Geofram (130 D(B))
20 Jul 11 UTC
Maniac, can you confirm for us that you are the seventh player?
Cachimbo (1181 D)
20 Jul 11 UTC
I'm thinking that if our writing is decent enough, we should post the link to the game and invite others to comment on the developing story.
Geofram (130 D(B))
20 Jul 11 UTC
The issue being that the can't see the press if they aren't in the game eh?
SacredDigits (102 D)
20 Jul 11 UTC
Sure they can, public messages are public.
Cachimbo (1181 D)
20 Jul 11 UTC
Actually, it's true that they may not be able to read them. Well, not directly anyway. Once in the next phase, I think that the public might be able to read the messages by accessing them through the archives, at the bottom of the page.
It remains to be shown that it works though.
TBroadley (178 D)
20 Jul 11 UTC
Just add "&viewArchive=Messages" to the end of the game URL to see the archive if the Messages button isn't there.
Geofram (130 D(B))

By the way, thanks for setting this up Geo!
Ruisdael (1529 D)
20 Jul 11 UTC
I didn't know that either. That's amazing. Haha in one game alone my dialogues are 73 pages long, 42,000 words. I once estimated that I'd written over a million words in Diplomacy and now I see that guess is probably conservative!

And we're at almost 4,000 in the new one, all of 8 hours in! Cachimbo you're my hero.

Anyone here read Nicholas and Alexandra by the way? Or Peter the Great?
SacredDigits (102 D)
20 Jul 11 UTC
I sadly had to do some googling and wikipediaing.
Cachimbo (1181 D)
20 Jul 11 UTC
Huh? How did I acquire Hero status????
I must humbly decline it (said he as he quickly reopened his word document only to further procrastinate on his thesis!)
TBroadley (178 D)
20 Jul 11 UTC
Hmm... Too bad I missed out on this. Can we round up another six interested parties and get a second game going?
Geofram (130 D(B))
22 Jul 11 UTC
I seriously just went to the library to pick up books for research material. I've already exhausted Wikipedia. I'm also keeping a list of all these characters everyone is introducing, last I counted it was fourteen.

Hello? Anyone there?
I tend to get the last post on a lot of politically-charged threads. Is it because of my debating prowess or do I tend to (borrowing a metaphor from American football) "jump on the pile" after the argument is long over? I hate to start an attention-whorish "Hey, look at me!" thread like this, but my curiosity got the better of me.

I'm not back, but...
I may well be on dipcast very soon, and I've been more distant from webdip over the past year. What tournaments have happened, who's been running them? Is there anything else big I may have missed? Have school of war things happened, any changes to the way live games are played? How about gunboat tournaments? I've plenty of stuff to talk about, but would like to be a little more filled in on recent developments :)

i'm back on webdiplomacy since about 3 hours after being away for more then a year and i was just in a tournament, to be clear; it wasn't my fault the first few months and after that i had no reason to come back since everything would've ended already...
now i'm curious, when do there come new tournaments like the leagues or something??
