Punishing leaves
I'm sure the following might not be taken well by some, but I just wanted to make some general comments on leavers. I think there needs to be a system through which players who leave consistently are punished. Now with non-anon games that isn't as much a problem if people considering joining a game look at the people who have already joined, and what their leave percent is.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Wanted--President/Prime Minister: Qualities: ...?
After a couple weeks of theological debate and bunk--and because I've just become completely enamored with "The West Wing"...yeah, it's an "old" show at5+ years, but I was too young to care when it first aired--we swing back to the political side here, and ask a simple question: what is desirable and/or needed in a modern world leader (disclaimer: This is NOT about the race, so please leave fights about Obama, Bachmann, etc., for another thread.)
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
22 Jul 11 UTC
So, what do we like in a modern world leader?

I think particularly in America, the average American asks the impossible of the President image-wise, namely, that the President is supposed to be somehow greater than the common man, some great leader figure who can "get the job done," and yet, at the same time, has to be on the level with the common man...

I'd also go so far as to say I THINK MYSELF the Left prefers a President that is more the former of that equation--ie, a powerful, greater-than-the-common-man figure, somewhat of an elitist--whereas the Right prefers the down-home, more humbly-rooted President...

Which is a bit paradoxical, as a Leftist President, I think, tends to be, in nature, more intellectual and distances themselves from the public somewhat socially and via class, and yet at the same time are more prone to try and equalize things somewhat amongst the masses...and yet, the Right-Wing President tends to cultivate the down-home image, and yet, certainly recently, is so often tied to larger corporations that in cultivating that image of being relatable to Joe Six Pack, at the same time, the Right-Wing President seems more alright with keeping Joe where he is...

I think of FDR and JFK when I think of the quintessential Leftist President--both from elite families, extraordinarily-well educated, their families tied to politics and power even before them, and being an intellectual-if-cold/cutthroat leader; FDR and JFK certainly had a good relationship with the common man, but clearly distanced themselves from them.

And then for a Right-Wing President, one need look no further than the Bushes and Palins for the present--and yet, too, should look nevertheless to Lincoln in the past, for it's Lincoln the Right-Wing President tries to emulate--the GOP's even sometimes referred to as "The Party of Lincoln," whereas the Deomocratic Party cultivates an image of "The Party of FDR/JFK/Jefferson," high-minded, intellectual, and elitist presidents, far removed from any "log cabin" mythos.

Of these...

Of course, I prefer the Intellectual, Elitist President.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
22 Jul 11 UTC
Elitism, once again, is the right way to go, or at least the way I prefer to go.

Why should the American/English/Western pulbic care how close to the people the President is socially? If he has a dog or a wife or watches the Big Game on Sunday?

For PR reasons, I understand why the PRESIDENT needs to try and enforce that image...

But why should we care, as people, to fool ourselves into thinking the President is "one of us" when, clearly, we elected him to represent and lead us, and therefore have decreed him a set of powers and a certain prestige that makes him BETTER than us, at least in theory?

A Philosopher King isn't practical or feasible for the modern era, but the Platonic or even Hobbesian ideal that the leader is elevated somewhat above the people as a necessity of rule, in order to create a great Leviathan, shouldn't be lost on the public.

Big government? Maybe yes, maybe no, it depends (I laugh at those arguing for a miniscule, streamlined government, that simple isn't feasible for a modern superpower--as of yet...still...somewhat--and it's akin to asking why the controls and inner workings for a Play Station 3 can't be more like the goold-old-fashioned simplicity of a Nintendo Entertainment System...that being said, a BLOATED government is no great idea, either, but I don't think we're--too--bloated yet.)

But a Big Leader?

That is a necessity.

And Prime Ministers tend not to be bombastic leaders, because of the nature of the system in which the PM is just but one MP, who rises through the party ranks and doesn't shoot to the top as an "outsider".

@Putin:

1. I'm sure he's fine, but...of all the great public political speakers, you choose Castro as your example? Even given your communist leanings, you couldn't think of a better one? (Lenin abroad, or a liberal president here...JFK or FDR? Neither were communist of course, but still, FAR better public speakers than Castro.)

2. Jiabo's not ringing a bell...and I get the feeling it's someone I know but don't know the name *checks online*

What I look for in a leader, is someone who can stick to a principle. And win other reasonable people over to it's cause. A polarizing personality, albeit one that would likely never be elected to an office by their very nature that would allow them to be a good leader in my eyes. One can only compromise so much before you don't stand for much of anything. I'd look for someone who can take a stance, and champion their cause. And I think America is the only nation that this could ever feasibly work in; Only the USA is a nation that wasn't originally formed as an ethnicity, or on geographical closeness, but on ideas.

I think I've wondered too far from where I meant to take this, so I'll just stop now. Sorry for confusing anyone, and myself. : /

Wen Jiabao is the Premier of China. Effectively he is the 3rd most powerful person in China but he gets a lot of press because the Premier officially runs the State Council (cabinet). During all the myriad natural disasters Wen has been very active on the ground helping the rescue effort. He spends holidays with Chinese workers instead of recreating in Zhongnanhai. He also lives in a simple apartment in Beijing.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
22 Jul 11 UTC
I hate to burst your bubble, Putin, but I honestly never buy any of that "spending holidays with the workers" or "simple apartment" lines.

He's a man with extreme power, being one of the most powerful men in arguably the most powerful nation on earth, certainly at least tied with the US, and rapidly surpassing it.

His public image is his public image.

He's NOT a an of the people if he's a ruler; the human ego is a basic fact of the human condition, and there's no way that man believes himself to be on par with workers.
Putin33 (111 D)
22 Jul 11 UTC
I hate to burst your bubble Obi, but people don't always conform to your generalizations and assumptions. It's hip and edgy to be cynical, but some people genuinely care about public service. And for all his supposed power you didn't know his name, so that says something I think.
SacredDigits (102 D)

There have been plenty of historical examples of leaders who walked among their people, and historically the Chinese leadership has gone the other way seeing the people as a more or less disposable unlimited resource. I've actually studied China extensively and been there several times, from what I've seen, Putin's analysis seems pretty spot on. China has needed that sort of leader for some time because, frankly, it was a ticking time bomb for a while. And then you can look at the changes in Chinese policies and how they're pulling people out of poverty at a record rate, it's clear that the current leadership cares more about the masses than past leaderships. Even in the US you have examples like William Proxmire, who declined almost all expense accounting while in the Senate and fought to stop pork barrel spending (well, except pork barrel spending on the dairy industry). In his final campaigns, he didn't accept campaign contributions, and he also signed some of his paychecks back to the US Treasury. Are they the exception? Yes, but they definitely exist, and I would agree that Wen Jiabao is among them from what I know/have seen.

I did a lot of research into the earthquakes that happened around the time of the Beijing Olympics, and he was definitely present throughout that.

And Castro did give some good speeches, but he also tended to run a little too long for my tastes.

I want a President who has strong moral values and has no previous political experience. I want a President with plenty of successful business experience. Also, military service is a big plus in my book, but not necessarily a deciding factor.
Octavious (2802 D)

I want a President who is deeply patriotic but has questionable moral values. That way we can shake our heads in soul cleansing moral outrage, while he boosts the arms industry and steals third world resources, and still enjoy all the benefits that such policies offer.

An inclination for making short speeches is also a plus.

"I hate to burst your bubble Obi, but people don't always conform to your generalizations and assumptions. It's hip and edgy to be cynical, but some people genuinely care about public service. And for all his supposed power you didn't know his name, so that says something I think."

I hate to burst your bubble, Putin, but my cynicism doesn't come from it being "hip' or "edgy" but rather from experience and unswerving belief in Hobbes' doctrine that human beings are desire-pursuing machines and Machiavelli and Nietzsche's that the biggest goal for any and all people are power over both themselves and over one another...

So you'll forgive my rejecting your utopian, rose-colored vision of the 3rd most powerful man in China being no more egotistical than the average worker and not elevating himself to a higher degree than them, to say nothing of the fact I'd be APPALLED if the man actually did denigrate himself to that degree...if he's that powerful a man, he doesn't have to have act an ass, but he should act like the elite and accomplished man he is.

(And my not knowing his name doesn't make him any less powerful or prestigous, it means I didn't know his name--and you'll forgive me for not knowing the names of the cabinet members of China, as you might imagine, I'm generally far more concerned with knowing the names of the cabinet members and Congressmen of THIS nation and the heads of other nations...the cabinet members of Germany, while undoubtedly important and accomplished people, are not exactly on my radar.)
Putin33 (111 D)
23 Jul 11 UTC
"f he's that powerful a man, he doesn't have to have act an ass, but he should act like the elite and accomplished man he is."

Well thankfully most everyone else doesn't share your condescending and contemptuous attitude towards the "common folk". You give snooty academics a bad name with your attitude. Being responsive to the "common man" doesn't mean being an ass. It means doing your job. People get into government, believe it or not, to help people. It's not rose-colored, it's the truth. But we live in the age of entitlement, where people expect instant results like mana from heaven. So when we see real public service we have an jaded attitude to it. And of course there are quite a lot of corrupt people out there who give all politicians a bad name. But to paint all civil servants with that broad brush would be committing the same kind of sin that anti-intellectual clowns commit when they say all academics are detached, snooty bastards.

He isn't just a cabinet member, he's the equivalent of the Prime Minister in the Chinese government. He's the one who does all the press conferences explaining Chinese policy. He's the public face of the regime. If you don't know his name you might as well not know anybody's name in the Chinese government. The reason he is #3 and not #1 is because of his party rank. Typically the Premier is #3 in the party (Party Secretary for the State Council). The President (Hu Jintao), which is a ceremonial position, is nonetheless #1 because the President also holds the position of General Secretary of the Party and Chair of the Central Military Commission. The #2 man is generally unknown by the international community, he is Wu Bangguo. He is unknown because his position in government doesn't afford him much of a public presence. He's the presiding officer of the National People's Congress. His party position though affords a great deal of power, as he has a lot of influence over who gets elected President through his control of the legislative body's party committee.

Hello? Anyone there?
I tend to get the last post on a lot of politically-charged threads. Is it because of my debating prowess or do I tend to (borrowing a metaphor from American football) "jump on the pile" after the argument is long over? I hate to start an attention-whorish "Hey, look at me!" thread like this, but my curiosity got the better of me.

I may well be on dipcast very soon, and I've been more distant from webdip over the past year. What tournaments have happened, who's been running them? Is there anything else big I may have missed? Have school of war things happened, any changes to the way live games are played? How about gunboat tournaments?
