Possible replacement needed.

I'm advertising on special request from a player in the game. France appears to be on the verge of CDing but is in a good position. A replacement would be welcome. Thanks.

Punishing leaves
I'm sure the following might not be taken well by some, but I just wanted to make some general comments on leavers. I think there needs to be a system through which players who leave consistently are punished. Now with non-anon games that isn't as much a problem if people considering joining a game look at the people who have already joined, and what their leave percent is.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Wanted--President/Prime Minister: Qualities: ...?
After a couple weeks of theological debate and bunk--and because I've just become completely enamored with "The West Wing"...yeah, it's an "old" show at5+ years, but I was too young to care when it first aired--we swing back to the political side here, and ask a simple question: what is desirable and/or needed in a modern world leader (disclaimer: This is NOT about the race, so please leave fights about Obama, Bachmann, etc., for another thread.)

Ethics Feedback requested
I would never ruin my pristine no-resignations record, but intellectually, I'm curious....
Indybroughton (3407 D(G))
22 Jul 11 UTC
suppose you were in a game where you were getting slagged and were just about to lose. And another country in much better shape went CD. What would be your view on the ethics of resigning your country (don't know how you do that other than just staying away) and paying to sign up as the other country. (and then wouldn't it be sweet to give a little payback as the new guy lol)
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Jul 11 UTC
First, it wouldn't work. The moment you returned to the game, you would resume your old position. So you couldn't take over the stronger one. Second, you go yourself in the hotseat, so I'd find it questionable to snag the other CD, even if it were possible.
dexter morgan (225 D(S))

how is it not possible? Does the system remember that you were in the game as country X (even after you have fully resigned/left) and not give you the choice of picking your country as it does others looking to join the game?
SacredDigits (102 D)
22 Jul 11 UTC
That's it exactly, dexter. I tried to re-enter a game I was eliminated from, it doesn't allow that either.
Katsarephat (100 D)
22 Jul 11 UTC
@Draugnar: Does that include after your own position is fully taken over? (Of course, nobody would go for the worse off position before taking the better one, but that would be an interesting experiment...)
SacredDigits (102 D)
22 Jul 11 UTC
For evidence, look at a game someone's resigned in.

gameID=61014 as a convenient example. Austria's name is still there, so were it ongoing, the system would plug boondude in there if he clicked on the game.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Jul 11 UTC
That's tough to say. Once someone takes over your position, there is no record of you being in the game, so you may well be able to buy back in to a different one. And it is theoretically possible that the person only had enough points to buy in to your lesser position, not the better one.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Jul 11 UTC
@dexter - You are automatically unCD'd if you return to a game you abandoned. It costs you nothing. But you don't have the option of snagging a different spot. It just automatically puts you back in your old spot.
TBroadley (178 D)
22 Jul 11 UTC
@Draugnar: you can go to the "Open" page and find games with CDed countries. Theoretically you could find your game and join back in as a larger country.
dexter morgan (225 D(S))
22 Jul 11 UTC
@TBroadley, I've noticed that games I'm in don't show up in the "Open" page for me... therefore, I would conclude that in the situation where no one has taken up your CD'd country yet, that the game would be invisible to you from the "Open" page. i.e. your only choice would be rejoining as your former country if it's still available. Somebody's obviously thought this out.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Jul 11 UTC
@TBroadley - It depends on if the code recognizes you as a former player somehow. We've already demonstrated that you can't rejoin in a different position if yours is still open, and that you can't rejoin if you've been eliminated. I'd have to dig deeper into the PHP and see if it looks back at some historical record to determine if you were ever a part of the game.

It is my personal and professional opinion that this is wildly inappropriate.

I thank you all for the feedback :)

I contemplated this situation in a recent game where a successful partner of mine went belly up, and I wondered if our opponent, who was being crushed, could resign and come back as "my partner" and haunt me. Glad to hear it would be difficult!

Hello? Anyone there?
I tend to get the last post on a lot of politically-charged threads. Is it because of my debating prowess or do I tend to (borrowing a metaphor from American football) "jump on the pile" after the argument is long over? I hate to start an attention-whorish "Hey, look at me!" thread like this, but my curiosity got the better of me.

I'm not back, but...
I may well be on dipcast very soon, and I've been more distant from webdip over the past year. What tournaments have happened, who's been running them? Is there anything else big I may have missed? Have school of war things happened, any changes to the way live games are played? How about gunboat tournaments? I've plenty of stuff to talk about, but would like to be a little more filled in on recent developments :)

i'm back on webdiplomacy since about 3 hours after being away for more then a year and i was just in a tournament, to be clear; it wasn't my fault the first few months and after that i had no reason to come back since everything would've ended already...
now i'm curious, when do there come new tournaments like the leagues or something??

2 questions:
1. In webDiplomacy, can an army be convoyed without its intention? (last line of paragraph http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Diplomacy/Rules#Convoy)
2. Is webDiplomacy the same as the phpDiplomacy on Facebook? Thanks.
