12-hour high stakes WTA gunboat?
Greetings all. I've set up a 12-hour per phase WTA classic gunboat with a password and was hoping to entice some of the more experienced Diplomacy veterans to join up for a high quality game. The entry fee is 333 D. Shoot me a PM if you want in. If you meet my moderately rigorous requirements (you've got some skill and don't make a habit of resigning games) I will send you the password. Thanks.

Hello, I'm going to be at the family cottage with no internet from Afternoon of June 30th to Evening of July 4th. I'm in 5, 2 or 3 day/phase games (none are anon) that I would need a sitter to enter 1-2 sets of orders for if I don't get pauses. anyone willing to help with that? Please PM me.

Trolling question
See inside...
Alderian (2425 D(S))

In the scene near the end where they are caught in the trolling net and all the fish get organized and all swim downwards, causing the boom holding the net to break, could that really happen? Could there be enough water between the tightly packed fish for them to get some serious downward force? Or is it just a fun story, one of Pixar's best?

What other Pixar movies do you think are their best? Toy Story and The Incredibles were great too of course. I did not care for Cars at all and have NO plans to see Cars 2.

I think you should have informed everyone that you're talking about the movie Finding Nemo first.

No I'm sure it couldn't happen (although I don't know the amount of force that a steel boom can withstand). I'm sure that the net forces fish to not be able to swim the same direction since the net eventually takes on an elliptical shape (roughly) which is an intensely strong shape.

Cars 2 was pretty good. I took my son to it for his 5th birthday and he really liked it. It was tough for him to follow since it jumps back and forth between a spy-game involving Mater the race going on with McQueen.

I'm not sure how I feel about Pixar going into sequels (apart from Toy Story 3, of course, which made me cry twice). I bet they'll still be better than 95% of the crap most studios shell out, but I really didn't care for Cars that much. But if the money made from Cars and Cars 2 merchandizing pays for things like Up then I suppose it's worth waiting an extra year.

...I don't think I've really liked, like any of the pixar films that much. I mean they aren't bad, they just weren't my thing. At all.

Oh and I believe you mean a trawling net.

Trawling for trolls? As for Toy Story 3, I didn't find anything really good about it, it was okay.

Actually, I'm looking forward to Cars 2, despite not being a fan of Cars. But my favorite Pixar films are The Incredibles and Wall-E. And it's hard to say which I like better. The Incredibles has the best plot start to finish, but Wall-E starts out so strong that it's like comparing Schindler's List to Saving Private Ryan (Ryan is Wall-E with the Omaha Beach opening and Schindler's is The Incredibles with the entirity of the moving being one of the best movies ever made).

Monster's, Inc. was also fun and the technical aspects like Sully's fur were incredible. As far as Nemo goes, I'd rather watch Lilo and Stitch (well, I think Stitch is just plain cool!) but Crush is pretty cool and the sharks were fun.

Sorry, I'm not sure how I managed to not mention I was talking about Finding Nemo.

There were parts of Lilo and Stitch I liked. Basically any part that didn't involve the big sister. Family means blah blah blah, ugh.

Why is it that every Disney-Pixar film gets a sequal or 2 or 3 except for Finding Nemo?

Ratatouille was good not great but better than Cars and Toy Story 2. Favorite out of all Pixar Films. A Bugs Life. Yea I said it.

I actually haven't watched Up, but I have heard very positive reviews about it. How is it like?

The Incredibles is my fav... the story was amazing, and the music was some of the best movie music ever (started my love of Giacchino).
I was disappointed with Cars. It is Doc Hollywood (and a dozen other movies) in animated form.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

By the way, if you liked The Incredibles, you should check out The Iron Giant which was written and directed by Brad Bird who did The Incredibles as well as several other classics such as "*batteries not included".

I just saw Cars 2 because somebody had free movie passes for it. I had low expectations, but it was actually mildly entertaining, since Yugos (Hugos) were the "villains". It had a lot of subtle humor in it which was surprising since Larry the Cable Guy plays such a predominate role.
Draugnar (0 DX)

@Alderian - Yes, Iron Giant is a great film. And I love *batteries not included.

@fortknox - Giacchino also did the music for the Medal of Honor series of video games. The man is the chameleon of composers being able to take his distinctive style (like Lost) and yet replicate the feel of John Barry (the Incredibles is so 007 musically speaking) or John Williams (Medal of Honor sounds like classic Williams) or anyone else he desires.
FatherSnitch (476 D(B))

@Riphen: I thought Ratatouille was great. When I watched it I actually wished I was 25 years younger so that the animated movies I got to watch growing up would have been of that standard rather than some of the mediocre stuff churned out in the 1970s and 80s.

@Gobbledygook: Up is superb. Story, characters, music - all top notch. And the montage of Carl and Ellie's life together is a miniature masterpiece of animated storytelling. Squirrel!
fortknox (2059 D)
28 Jun 11 UTC
@Draug - from my understanding JJ Abrams found Giacchino through his work with the medal of honor series (and, yes, it, too, is brilliant). He has many styles, but still distinct. And is the superb composer... adds sooo much to the movie/show/game, but on its own is great to listen to. Very similar to Williams but much more dynamic as you said. I've often called him the 'John Williams of the new generation'... but he may be better than williams when he's finished.

This Time On Philosophy
In "The Odyssey" by Homer, Achilles, the elite hero of the Greeks, leads a large mass of unquestioning, robot-like followers, the Myrmidons, who are classically described as being "ant-people" in their nature. If we were asked which we'd rather be, a hero or a drone, most of us would choose the former, "drone" doesn't sound appealing...and yet, politically, we prefer the rule of masses over the few...so, which is preferable? Why? Elitists, Pluralists, ho! :)
