12-hour high stakes WTA gunboat?
Greetings all. I've set up a 12-hour per phase WTA classic gunboat with a password and was hoping to entice some of the more experienced Diplomacy veterans to join up for a high quality game. The entry fee is 333 D. Shoot me a PM if you want in. If you meet my moderately rigorous requirements (you've got some skill and don't make a habit of resigning games) I will send you the password. Thanks.

This Time On Philosophy
In "The Odyssey" by Homer, Achilles, the elite hero of the Greeks, leads a large mass of unquestioning, robot-like followers, the Myrmidons, who are classically described as being "ant-people" in their nature. If we were asked which we'd rather be, a hero or a drone, most of us would choose the former, "drone" doesn't sound appealing...and yet, politically, we prefer the rule of masses over the few...so, which is preferable? Why? Elitists, Pluralists, ho! :)

Barak Obama - American born?
Is he? look below?
Vaibhav Warden (100 D)

In class today my teacher told me that Obama may not actually be american born and then that means he cant be president.

I always though since grade school that every pres was from USA but if he really is from Zambia then that would mean hes the most unamerican presidentt since carter. If his Zambian birth certificate is real then what will happen? Will the US Army fuight to remove him from power or can he reign as a unconstitutionional president? I think that he would have to step down and then maybe he could have a political carer in Zambia?

What do you guys think?

"In class today my teacher told me that Obama may not actually be american born" if you're in the U.S. and your teacher is saying this. I think your teacher should not be spreading what are obvious lies to students.

It's a challenge, but try to filter through the propaganda. Usually if you see a single point/sentence repeated word for word from multiple sources or there's a massive attack on someone's person (and not their policies) then you can safely ignore it.
I can't believe we have to choose between two platforms; one that wants us to have personal choice but can't be fiscally responsible, and one that uses myth to make policies to control our social lives and can't be fiscally responsible.
Is your teacher really using phrases like: "hes the most unamerican president since carter."?

Hearing this, I'm doubting your teacher's credibility.

Granted, I don't expect all teachers to be truly unbiased. But phrases like this should stick out to you.

Yeah I thought it was pretty fucked too but it makes you think. i obviously cant vote but i would say im democract but just the idea if a sitting pres suddenly was found out for a fraud and he/she could no longer be pres BUT he/she had large supporter base and entrenched in society and govt then what would happen if they refused to step down?

Ridiculous.
Tiderion (274 D)
26 Jun 11 UTC
A) His birth certificate in full is online available for viewing.
B) His father was Kenyan not Zambian. Obama has no tie to the country of Zambia.
C) Carter was un-American? How so? The man was President of the United States.
Yonni (136 D(S))

I'm not sure why America has a fixation on place of birth. For a country with a rich history of immigration, it seems a little silly.
Tiderion (274 D)
26 Jun 11 UTC
To become president, one undergoes the most thorough vetting process. You can't get away with that sort of thing. There's not even a question of anyone getting that far. And even if the President was found to be a fraud, we have an impeachment process to remove them from office.

I would seriously question your teacher's motives. This is not productive towards learning nor is it challenging your critical thinking skills.

Did you know that the first president wasn't born in the USA?
Invictus (240 D)
26 Jun 11 UTC
If it were true, it would be a serious constitutional crisis. He WAS born in America, but I think it's a perfectly legitimate question to ask of any president. You just need to know to stop asking it when the evidence is presented.
krellin (80 DX)
26 Jun 11 UTC
Yonni, because it is in our Constitution, and first and foremost we are supposed to be guided by the principles set forth in that single Document. Not really that difficult to grasp. On the other hand, if you start picking and choosing which parts of your founding legal document you choose, then you have no legal system at all, as who will be the person to pick and choose which parts are valid. (I seriously hope you aren't that ignorant that you don't grasp this concept....it's pretty basic.) *IF* people want to allow non-US born citizens to be President, then people should push for a Constitutional Amendment. Again...not too difficult a concept to grasp.
krellin (80 DX)
26 Jun 11 UTC
@Tiderion -- Actually, there is no "thorough" vetting process to become President. Clearly, you don't even have to show your Birth Certificate....as Obama only **recently** showed us his. that being said, if he was not US born, you would not have to impeach him, as he would not be President. You would imprison him.
Yonni (136 D(S))
26 Jun 11 UTC
I realize it's in the constitution.

I was thinking about it in more of a hypothetical sense. Even if it weren't in the constitution, I still think that Obama's place of birth would still be hotly contested issue. I may be wrong, but I've felt that American popular opinion supports the notion that only an American born person can lead America.

Also, Krellin, you don't need to post like that. You're a dick.

It doesnt really matter where he was born, because whether he is 'allowed' to or not he is the president. It's too late for the birth certificate bullshit. I realize alot of people have trouble accepting a president thats not a white guy but I think this issue was laid to rest when he came up with like 2 birth certificates.

He didn't need to show us his birth certificate, since he showed it to agencies acting on our behalf like the CIA and FBI who check things out very thoroughly. And I would hope that the CIA is better able to determine country of origin than a billionaire or a math teacher, because otherwise, we're in a pretty scary place.

@Kalel - enjoyed your comment

re: Jimmy Carter - born in Plains Georgia - why is that un-american? Seved as a nuclear engineer in the US Navy. Was the right man at the right time to be president at that time. I know I was very relieved with him being president at the time of 3 mile island accident because he knew what to look for and what to ask about. Why is that un-american?

None of the first 7 presidents (Washington, Adams, Jeggerson, Madison, Monroe, Adams, Jackson) were born in the U.S.A. Barack had an American mother, which automatically granted him US citizenship. My kids are both USA citzens although they were both born overseas (as I was). This is quite common for children of US Military. Are they un-american because their parent(s) are serving their country?
A child born abroad to one U.S. citizen parent and one alien parent acquires U.S. citizenship at birth under Section 301(g) of the INA provided the U.S. citizen parent was physically present in the United States or one of its outlying possessions for the time period required by the law applicable at the time of the child's birth. His mother grew up in the USA, moving quite a bit because her father was in the military. Is that un-american?

Tell the teacher to get the facts correct before parroting stupid comments!
Invictus (240 D)

"None of the first 7 presidents (Washington, Adams, Jeggerson, Madison, Monroe, Adams, Jackson) were born in the U.S.A."

That's because they were born before the Revolution. They were still all born in the colonies which would later become the United States.

Jeggerson? What are you, a communist?

Draugnar (0 DX)
27 Jun 11 UTC
This is old news, dpromer. Donald Trump tried to bring it up again and again, making an issue of it, until the President got fed up with a stupid controversy, ordered the long form, and released it to the world, dumping a shitload of egg on Trump's bizarre haired head.

The point is "not releasing an details on the situation" is a false statement as plenty of details ere released, including his long form birth certificate that put the birthers' conspiracy to rest and showed them as a whacked out group of idiots.
