I'm very new to this so I was foolish enough to sign up for games despite taking vacations this summer. I'm going to be gone from Sunday to Thursday and I'm not sure if I can get a pause in all of my games so if someone would be willing to submit moves for me (or at least a move so I don't CD) I would be very grateful. Reply and I'll PM you my password.

Sorry about this, I'll be more careful signing up for games in the future.

Just ask Macbeth and Caesar about Shakespeare's curses...anyone REALLY want to take that chance? ;) (And for what? To see if he smoked weed? Let the rest be silence, PLEASE!)

Time Limit
Is there a way to make a game with a time limit either in game years (ie 1913) or a real date (ie 7/13/11 at midnight)?

Besides the interest as a variant it would make it easier to avoid NMRs by having the game end before a trip

Not Voting Pause If It Means The Win
Playing at Boston made me realise how many outside factors there are to the original game. There are many other ways to lie, decieve, and trick. There are some here too that get utilised, like waiting until the last second to enter orders so your opponent makes moves against an NMR that fail. But what about NOT pausing?

First, very well done, I'm proud of you, a fellow webdipper kicking butt F2F!!

Second, this proves I was right to take Burgundy last weekend when I was France and you were Germany, AND I was right to take Black Sea last weekend while I was Turkey and you were Russia, you would have killed me otherwise, just admit it already!! :-P

well, to put that into perspective, the turnout for the tournament unfortunately wasn't as big as in previous years, it was only 1 board per round and some players didn't play all the rounds. I actually didn't beat that many people :(
So nothing to be overly proud of.

But I met some of the New England FtF regulars and a guy from down south who had just played at DixieCon. Contrary to MadMarx's experience at WAC this year they were all nice to me and let me top the first two boards and only 2 dots down on the 3rd one. I hope to see some of them again at HuskyCon in August,

There being only 3 boards also contributed to me getting best Italy in game 1 with 13, best France in game 2 with 17 (damn) and best AH in game 3 with 7.

Alex was a great host and besides running the tournament, playing 1 round himself and getting food and drinks, he also promised me to play in our Boston FTF final table rematch (yay!) and introduced me to Clone HIgh (yay!). And gave me a shiny gold trophy in the end :)

MadMarx (36299 D(G))

I'd hold you to that if I could, but I can't, so I won't...

Anyway, regardless of how much you play it down, being the Boston Massacre Champion is quite an impressive accomplishment, though not surprising, we all know you are an excellent player, way to prove it yet again!

Sorry for the quick digression, but I'd like to respond to TheWizards comment implying that the people at WAC were not all nice. Honestly, there was just one guy that really rubbed me the wrong way, being sooo wrapped up in the tournament and himself, and any place can have a bad apple. In my first game, the Russian may have "turned the board" against me since, I , as Austria, would not agree to support him into Munich in fall '01, but he seemed like a great guy, he just took a very hard line within that game. There were very many very nice people at WAC, there were just many other factors at play, like me being extremely introverted around people I don't know at all (unlike the webdippers, I felt like I knew you guys to some extent), the fact that people with previous experience with others nudged them to ally up at times (though this may just be a bit of sour grapes on my part since I got my butt kicked), AND when I posted those post game comments it was not a purely non-fiction piece of writing, I was exaggerating a bit here and there. SO, bottom line, I'm confident anyone/everyone on this site would have a great experience at future WAC tournaments, don't let my one poor showing discourage you from going there and doing well! F2F appears to be catching on a bit in this community, and I think that's great and would encourage everyone to try it at least once, and hopefully at least twice!! :-)

WIZARD!!! you're da man!! congrats and very well deserved. way to rep us "internet" playes haha!

having played with you now in the leagues on here and in Boston, I have no doubt you deserve the honor of Boston Massacre champ!

Great job getting Alex to join up a game on here - I think its going to be awesome to get more cross-pollination. I have enjoyed the game on every platform I've played it on, and its great to get more FtF play out of the folks who have been learning the game from the webdip community.

Looking forward to hearing the full report and seeing any pics. please post the links if the Boston folks have a site up.

Ok, this is how I remember the tournament:

Pre-boards:
I come there Saturday morning, remembering what MadMarx wrote about his WAC experience and how the regular FtF players were only too happy to take him out right away as they didn’t know him, not knowing anyone besides Alex Amann, who TD’ed the whole tournament and whom I also had just met 1 week before. All I was hoping for was some friendly faces, maybe some other new players and not some set of guys who have played each other over countless other tournaments only too willing to take out the new unknown guy.
So I got down in the basement of the store and sure enough behind shelves of some of the most unknown board games there is this small group of veteran dip players telling war stories about previous tournaments and unknown people I had never heard of. Great!
The familiar faces for me were Alex busy setting up everything, Neil from the week before, who I had not interacted with too much as he was always playing on different boards and Robert who had also played with us the week before and who I had not talked to a lot either as he had only been a Turkey to my England on my first board in 100 Memorial Drive and had then been on different boards. He especially seemed to have a good time talking to a guy with a grayish long beard that looked I always imagined a veteran diplomacy expert to look like. It was all pretty intimidating, everyone knew everyone and I just sat down and was quietly fighting my empty stomach first and then the taste of a microwaved 7 Eleven sandwich with coffee from the same store. Ok I thought, at least go down fighting, show them you know something about the game and hope that some will remember you at least as someone not being too gullible and not making stupid moves when you give it a second try at HuskyCon in a few weeks. Let’s fight!
TheWizard (5364 D(S))

Board 1:
We are only seven players, so Alex has to play as well; remembering how he played Germany and was stabbing my Russia in Scandinavia basically every turn we shared a border until I was gone from there the week before, I was just hoping not ending up next to him and also not in between Robert and Carl (the guy with the beard) who seemed to be old acquaintances. But I was hopeful I could make a good impression and it only being 6 other guys that after game 1 and then probably playing another game with them, I might get some sort of credits and do well in the second game.
Off we go, Country assignments: I didn’t really know the names of the people yet, so most of the assignments were blanks to me until I heard my name…. Italy! Could have been better, but I wasn’t really unhappy with that, after listening to the Italy podcast a few weeks ago I was curious to try some of the things I had heard in there and determined not to just sit there dithering and slowly fading away… I had a plan!
Who would be Austria? Curiously I was awaiting the assignment….. Alex!
Shit! So I would have to defend Venice from turn 1. So much for my plan of being active and trying all these fun things, but ok, hopefully as Austria he will be busy defending the Balkans and maybe not look at me as aggressively as when he was Germany last week. Maybe Russia or Turkey would keep him busy enough. Russia was the only other guy from outside of the greater Boston Area, Will, my companion in fighting 7 Eleven sandwiches (the store was next door), and I knew he also played online at playdip besides FtF. Maybe I could get him into an IT? Turkey was Robert, which was ok, I didn’t expect him to make stupid moves and allow Alex to grow too fast. Until I saw who was France. The guy with the beard, Carl, Robert’s best friend. They surely won’t both go at me with fleets… or will they? Well, at least not in 1901, but overall the assignment couldn’t have gone much worse.
OK, game starts, everyone tells me they are my friends and they don’t trust the other guys. I decide to keep most options open and as I will surely exit soon, play a fast-paced game and no lengthy lepanto that Alex would stab me out of anyways. So I’m getting all my units to where they can do something, Ven-Tyl, Rom-Ven and Nap-Ion. Alex is not too happy with that but as Turkey and Russia seem to be fighting, it all seems to be ok for me. I try to convince Alex I am not looking at his dots and wonder what to do next. R/T not going for a jugger, nothing interesting happening in the west I decide to stab Alex and support myself into Tri, wanting to get off to a good start and 5 centers. Maybe this game will last a bit longer than I expected. Alas, Alex guesses right, blocks me from Trieste, walks into Greece uncontested and gets 2 builds. To make things worse, France builds a southern fleet. There go all my plans of being active and doing something good here. I have no idea where my 5th center could possibly come from, I have France on my heels, his best buddy is playing Turkey and I have angered and unsuccessfully stabbed Austria.
The next year goes as expected, I do not pick up anything and am stuck at 4. E and F turn out to be allied and with Russia also turning onto Germany he is in an even worse shape than I am. Alex at least is occupied with R and T in the Balkans, it looks like I will do the exact one thing I did not want to do: Dither and wither. Come Fall 03 I get the impression my only way to do anything here is to stab each and everyone. I accept France’s support into Munich despite telling Russia I would support him there and walk into Trieste realizing that after 3 seasons of truce it might be unprotected. Both work and to my surprise I find myself at 6 units, suddenly capable of defending against French fleets and thanks to a Turkish(?) gain Austria being too small to take revenge. In the next years I continue to stab on all sides and get to 7, down to 6 , up to 7 an then up to 9, 12 and finally 13 centers. After me getting into Marseilles and an English stab, France is crumbling and on his way out, I come around Iberia, lose Marseilles in the process but end up in Brest, Austria is finally going down as well, Russia later blames it on me that because of my failed support into Munich in 03 he didn’t get a crucial build (true) that gave England the upper hand in the north to expand all the way into Moscow and up to 11 centers, but Russia keeps Berlin and Munich that I lost in 05 until the end of the game. Because of me growing at Austria’s cost, Russia and Turkey are forced into an alliance but with their armies partially out of position and Russia being busy in Germany and with England on his doorstep, both not really being able to profit from Austria’s demise so that most falls to me. Despite losing hold of Mun and Mar, I end up with Bre, Por, Spa, Tun, my 3, the Austrian 3 and Ser, Gre, Rum when the game ends, me unexpectedly leading the tournament.

to be continued...
