Gunning for the Gunboat-3 Discussion
I don't think Turkey understands that this is a WTA game.
He gets nothing for letting Russia wins.
And I played poorly as Italy. I tried to stop the Jugger but France kept attacking me and not sending a fleet to safeguard the Ionian.

* why does it take an act of congress to get a "contact the moderator" button somewhere visible?

Seriously, how many threads do we have to see where people can't easily find a way to contact moderators...before we either put a button next to "create a new thread" or just at the top next to "Home"?

I'm not a programmer...or I would write the code.... I've contributed two or three times, so I'm not just a person who throws out ideas without pitching in.... and I pledge $50US if someone will create a visible button. It would make our site better.

Can I get an amen?

"Delicate euphemism" is an unnecessary repetition because all euphemisms are, by design, delicate. If you (knee jerk) disagree with me, then I will ask you for an example of a harsh euphemism.

It was still funny though, so don't cry (princess).

Maple, if I describe a piece of clothing as 'soft velvet', was the 'soft' unnecessary? No. All velvet is soft, perhaps, but by describing the velvet as soft, this reinforces the fact. So a delicate euphemism would be a euphemism that is particularly delicate.

tldr: stop being pedantic.

It is possible to have a crude or distasteful euphemism. I agree it defeats the purpose of having a euphemism in the first place, but people do it anyway.
There are tons indelicate euphemisms for penis. Cock is probably the best example.
And as for euphemisms for sex, "doing it" and "screwing" might be juvenile, but I wouldn't call them delicate.
mapleleaf (0 DX)
18 Jun 11 UTC
@Maf - You're a moron. Those are not euphemisms at all. You ought to stop taking it up the ass long enough to educate yourself.

"Euphemism is a substitution for an expression that may offend or suggest something unpleasant to the receiver, using instead an agreeable or less offensive expression,[1] or to make it less troublesome for the speaker.

Some euphemisms are intended to amuse, while others are created to mislead."
The euphemisms I list are used to avoid avoid discomfort on the part of the speaker and thus fit this definition. Shut up maple.

Mafia, I think that maple, despite being an ass about it, has a point. I think the term euphemism implies connotatively that the "euphemism" isn't just another name for it. Would you say that "Chicken Pox" is a euphemism for "varicella", the proper scientific name for the disease? What makes that name correct? Is "hombre" a euphemism for "man"? Language is just a semantic construction, and everything is a "euphemism" for the true identity of the object.
Mafialligator (239 D)
18 Jun 11 UTC
Hmmm... I do see what you and him are getting at, and this is an absurdly pointless argument, but the examples I gave started off as euphemisms in the strict sense that you and maple are referring to. They really were ways of discussing something that were not to be discussed in public, while avoiding offense in certain circles. All the examples I gave however, have since become so widely known however that they no longer serve this purpose, and have thus become offensive again, simply because everyone knows what they mean. But fine. In the interests of just letting this rest I will concede the point to you, and with much chagrin to maple, and amend my original post in this thread. I should have made my meaning more plain and said "Is it just me or does "act of congress" sound like an especially delicate euphemism for sex?"
There. I hope reading that correction was worth all the time and effort. (rolls eyes).
☺ (1304 D)

I didn't really have umbrage with the phraseology "delicate". Most euphemisms probably are, but I'm sure some are not. Especially reverse euphemisms, heh.

My only real objection was to your examples, as I didn't really think they fit the connotation of euphemism, but were rather just another word for an object.

Maf was using slang expressions as examples of euphemisms.

I gave him props for being funny too. You guys are hurting my feelings.

Why No in-game messaging?
Isn't the main purpose of "Diplomacy" communications? Why are there lots of games that specify No in-game messaging? Just curious. Unless the game is anonymous, I would be worried about lots of private communications.

Beginners guide to Gunboats?
So, I'm pretty intrigued by the idea of gunboats but I feel that there are a lot of nuances that are a little tough to pick up on the fly.
Anybody wanna give me a quick few points so I don't seem like an idiot on my first game?
