Gunning for the Gunboat-3 Discussion
I don't think Turkey understands that this is a WTA game.
He gets nothing for letting Russia wins.
And I played poorly as Italy. I tried to stop the Jugger but France kept attacking me and not sending a fleet to safeguard the Ionian.

Why No in-game messaging?
Isn't the main purpose of "Diplomacy" communications? Why are there lots of games that specify No in-game messaging? Just curious. Unless the game is anonymous, I would be worried about lots of private communications.

Why always so north? Boston was feasible because it was on the coast, but getting to Chicago from Virginia is not an economical expense without carpooling. Babak, I can almost guarantee to be at the DC one.

I think we should compile a map of players interested in FtF, that way we can notify each other of events coming their way or possible plans to meet up. In fact, brb, I'm going to make one.

Montreal is only 6 hours away from Boston. I'm surprised that none of them managed to make it. The problem with Canada is the American border security. Not all Americans have passports for international travel.

I would like to see one in Syracuse NY (that is the closest American city to me) and it is only 4.5 hours away from either Montreal or Toronto.
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Jun 11 UTC
Ah the good ol' days. Remember when you could drive to canada and back on a US drivers license or state ID? Heck, we went to Canada when I was a kid and I (the kid) had no ID at all.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
14 Jun 11 UTC
Yeah, Canada would be a pain for me, but if that's where we decided to do it, I'd probably make it work.
Geofram (130 D(B))
14 Jun 11 UTC
I'd be down for some Toronto Dip, I'm there 2x a year at least and love excuses to go more.

Also, passports are getting harder and harder to get, Americans have no excuse not to get one now.
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Jun 11 UTC
The problem with the passport is the time it can take to get one if you don't already have one. But I would say plenty of American's have a perfectly good excuse not to get one. If you live in Tennessee and don't plan to fly to another country on a trip, odds are you won't be driving to one for any foreseeable reason. So why go through the hassle?

Not sure how keen I am on combining standard F2Fers equally with our webdip group. As I said previously, standard F2Fers, on the whole, in my very limited experience, tend to be much more intense, ruthless and "angry" during game play (since they don't play nearly as often, thus every stab, taken or given, is much more critical and emotional). What really made our Boston experience special, in my opinion, is that everyone was so laid back and mainly there to have fun playing with the webdip people that we have played for so long on the internet. The couple F2Fers that were there were great, but I fear if we bring in a large group of F2Fers, the F2F "cliques" could very well throw off the entire vibe, which would be tragic...
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Jun 11 UTC
Ah, but if you have a year, you get the F2Fers here on WebDip and make them disciples of Kestas. (Sorry, a little bleed over from one of the religion thread :-P )
Geofram (130 D(B))

I had a friend that wanted to go to Canada with me. He got a passport in 4 weeks without expediting it. The prices go up every year and its the last thing you want to be caught without.
Geofram (130 D(B))
14 Jun 11 UTC
I agree with Marx. I'm always willing to play FtF, but I'll never go through the scheduling loops and budget of making a big trip if it isn't a webDip majority.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
14 Jun 11 UTC
Yeah Montreal would be a lot of fun since I speak French but I can definitely see how it would preclude many people.

About passports though... it was really no trouble for me to get one for the first time in 2009. But hey, idk.

Chicago is cool I guess, never been there either. I would ask that wherever we go, it's a city with good public transit. Because, being poor and under 25, I can't rent cars or afford taxis. Other than that... I am down to go anywhere.

What about Miami or something hot?

Well, if it is in driving distance and I'm going, I'd be willing to be the "around the town" transporter (flip the Jeep over in mid-air and scrape the bomb off the underside on a crane, hehehe) and I can guarantee a designated driver seeing as, despite what I present here, my drinking is very limited. I'm like the guy from the Dos Equis commercial. I don't often drink, but when I do, it's well-aged single malt highland Scotch, VSOP (or better) Cognac, or a Vodka Martini and then only one in any given night. The Jeep holds 5: me, my wife, and three others.

I think the biggest factor in where the location will be is who is willing to be the Event Coordinator.

Although Crazyter will deny it, she actually did a tremendous amount of work and I simply don't see how it's possible to coordinate this event unless we have a native of that city willing to take point on coordinating.

Honestly, I know how to run a tournament now, and I'm happy to do it again or give someone else pointers. The real work is replacing Crazyter in a new city.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
14 Jun 11 UTC
yeah you're right about that ab. i'm willing to help in whatever way i can however. if it's in texas i can certainly do my best in that regard
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Jun 11 UTC
If we do Greater Cincinnati, I would volunteer to be the coordinator. I know of several locations which would be suitable and have some friends who are event planners. Plus, I and my wife planned my mom-in-laws 75th birthday party which had over 100 people attending at one point or another during that day, so planning an event for 20 to 30 should be feasible for me.

Elsewise, if it is a midwest one where I am driving, I'll be happy to help out by bringing stuff.
Crazyter (1335 D(G))
14 Jun 11 UTC
I would be willing to help organize another tourney from afar and assist in any way that I can. But yeah the main events coordinator has to be a native of that area. I think Draug would be a good coordinator if its in Cincin, because he has a lot of time, energy, and passion for the site and the game. But he would have to have help. Ab filled in a lot of gaps for me, like when our first venue didnt put anything in writing and then fell thru completely. If I had been the only one working on it, I might have despaired at that point, so Ab was great to talk to and had a lot of common sense and good advice. Similarly Wizard and I proofread his draft rules and made suggestions.

I agree with 3 other people who said they would only travel for a dip FTF if its this webdip community. I definitely agree. I dont want to go to the Boston Massacre this coming weekend becasue I just didnt enjoy the people there.

RE Driving: If you can deal with Boston, you can deal with any American city and many European ones too.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)

Hmm, we clearly have too many Americans here. Still, maybe some day you decide to go out of the US/Canada zone and come over to the old world... the places actually represented on the Diplomacy board :P

If it's in Bulgaria I'd be happy to organize logistics and entertainment with alcohol and light recreational drugs on the house :)

Great stuff looking at the pics and the video. Nice to put a face to the names. Babak looked very pleased with himself after that solo win (as well he should). Next time I think someone should go around the room and do a quick interview with each participant.

@ Draug: I live in Bowling Green (south-central KY). My brother-in-law is here also and Jacob is in Lexington. Indy would be a great place to host since we have family up there for the wife and kids.

I agree with Draug that Chicago is really busy, even more so than Indy, and difficult to travel in.
Babak (26982 D(B))
16 Jun 11 UTC
I'm definately down for a mid-west version. Indy, KY, StL, or Chitown all sound good to me.

Also - DC is hosting a tournament on 9/30 to 10/2 if anyone wants to go. I'm going to get more details etc soon so I'll probably post something on the forum
