Game Error
For some reason, instead of showing how long each of my games has until the next phase, they all just say "NOW" which normally isn't the case unless it just became the new turn. Im wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same problem and if so how did they fix it?

Kubla Con/San Francisco Face to Face event Ranking System
At the Kubla Con F2F event, we had 3 previously all Email players playing FtF for the first time and they loved it. The ranking system uses separate scoring systems for each round so that you have to vary your play style.

Draw or win?
I understand the Gunboat WTA games exist, but why in regular games does it seem like players more interested in Draws than Wins? I think draws are reasonable when there are true stalemates, but VERY few other times. It bugs me for people to suggest ones, when it is clear someone could take an 18th sc. Thoughts or opinions on why its better to draw? Anyone?

Whatever.. I was just curious to see what the general opinion was. I don't think drawing is worth it, its a bit ridiculous.

Well, you see, this is going to turn into a WTA vs PPSC argument.

You have a legit question, I'm just dreading what the outcome of this will be.

@ilse10 - I agree that people draw too early and it is really annoying. There is a such thing as a "strategic" stalemate when you are down to three players, but besides that there are very few non-stalemate line situations in my mind.
SacredDigits (102 D)

I have a short attention span and will occasionally draw early because I'm sick of the game.

(that is, if I'm not in a position to win and people who ARE in a position to win offer the draw, I'll snap that shit up. With few exceptions, I won't draw when I'm winning, live games being the biggest exception back when I didn't know how to budget time for them well)
Always go for what's best for you. If you can convince someone to draw when they can win there is no reason not to do so. And it's why so many people try. If that's the situation you're in, where you can clearly win and people bug you for a draw, ignore them. Plain and simple.

I do find it kind of annoying when people set out on 2- or 3-way draw pacts from S01... I find that behavior contrary to the spirit of the game, because it willfully defies the overriding objective of the game (to win) and often has very little rational basis. It's an effective way to farm points and get a respectable win/draw combined %, but it's completely in opposition to the explicitly-stated goals of the game.

But those are relatively rare. Otherwise draws don't bother me too too much.
SacredDigits (102 D)

I agree with Eden on the 2 or 3 way draw pacts. And add on that whenever someone offers me one, I'll go along with it, but be even more wary than I normally would. And stab-happy. I can't trust someone who starts the game with a stated desire of not winning.
taos (281 D)

there are many draw players ,i mean they just like to draw ,some farm points and others just dont believe they can win i guess.

At the OP: just because a game is not at a stalemate doesn't mean its not stale.
I can't think of a specific example at the moment, but you can reach situations where for any player to make an aggressive move would lead to their demise, so noone does, so you draw.
Draugnar (0 DX)

I assume all agreements to draw from S01 should always be viewed and played as if one person is going to stab and go for the win. That's what I do. If I see the opportunity, I'll grab it. The exception being certain league games where the draw outcome is *better* for me in the league and I don't want to risk someone else getting the win by stabbing me first.

Of course, this doesn't apply to any of the alliances I have going in any of my current games. :-)

I will often draw in the if I attack you, the third player will win, so lets just call it a draw,

PPSC is a VARIANT. It is NOT the original game of Diplomacy, where one should only go for a win. It EXPLICITLY ALLOWS draws and allows "splitting the world", so those of you that insist that PPSC players play as if the game were WTA....need to get over it :)

Because if I can't win, I want to make damn sure no-one else does. If someone else gets to . 18SCs I've failed

Win >>>>> Draw >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Survive. And it makes no odds if it's PPSC or WTA to me

To me, the goal of any game is not to win. The goal is to have fun. If aiming to win is most fun for you, you should aim to win. If aiming for a draw is most fun, you should aim for a draw. De gustibus non est disputandum.
^Then you shouldn't be playing diplomacy if you don't try to win. If your saying that you play to have fun by trying to win, but not necessarily winning, I'm fine with that. But if you're playing to have fun by not even attempting to win, then I don't think I would ever want to play with you.
SacredDigits (102 D)

A draw in PPSC and a draw in WTA give equal diplo points to each player.

The main difference is that you get some points for surviving if someone else solos. Draws are the exact same in both.

Diplomacy
Cheers to all,

I was out and about browsing through various Diplomacy pages and came across this site. Quite interesting how many from different ages and skill levels can indeed play here. As an advanced Diplomacy player myself long out of practice, I would like to challenge the best on this website. There is only one way to be the best, it's to play the best. So hello all again, but I challenge you advanced players to a game. Look forward to playing with you.
