Of the Masters Tourney games thus far played, I and others have found many players that hardly communicate. Please be aware that a lack of communication puts a big target on your back.

lack of communication = stab early
lots of communication = stab later

It's true that in most tournaments and cups and at the masters cup as well there are awfully lot of people not communicating enough, but what the hell does this guy smoke?
it seems like obiwanobiwan to me :P

Really, I think that *is* obiwan. He can't exactly hide who he is with his overly verbose ramblings.

It would have been funny had someone along the way decided not to push it on to another player. ;-)

I've found that no one wants to talk after they commit the stab or to anyone that is their enemy. It is frustrating as hell when there is a complete refusal of communication... you don't even know if they are reading or are just screaming "DIE DIE DIE!" and they hit their commands with slobber streaming down their chin.

I did a statistical study a long time ago that dealt with the trend between the average messages sent per game by a player and their win/draw percentage.

It is true that there is a trend. The trend indicated that the more messages sent per game by a player, the higher the win/draw percentage and that this number increased at a reasonable ratio up to about the 70-90 msg/game and 50% win/draw mark before it began to level off. Therefore, noobs beware, if you're not talking to the other players in the game at regular intervals, you will likely lose.

Tru Ninja +1 I have definitely noticed that when I have enough time to respond reliably to the other players, I do fairly well. When I get busy at work or RL or if I am in too many games, so I dont have time to respond , wham I am likely to get stabbed.
TheWizard (5364 D(S))

I get stabbed a lot more than normal on 3 occasions...
1) Anonymous games
2) games with Babak
3) games with Crazyter
unfortunately I had a lot of all 3 lately, or even all 3 combined :)
Draugnar (0 DX)

#1 is probably games with #2 and #3. :-) I know Crazyter always stabs me, but usually she costs us both the game when she does.

Love ya' Crazyter! Please don't stab me any more...
TheWizard (5364 D(S))
08 Apr 11 UTC
yeah
I usually drag her down as well :)

And I second the please don't stab me any more!
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
08 Apr 11 UTC
I'm at 52% with just over 140 messages a game. Crazyter is at 56% with nearly 300 messages a game (well done for playing into gender stereotypes there)

When I get to the A League (assuming she hasn't moved to Premiere), Crazyter will just stab me anyhow and remind me that everyone lies in Diplomacy, even when they aren't in a game of Diplomacy and that, had she not stabbed, she would have been metagaming. Therefore she had to stab to avoid cheating!

Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
08 Apr 11 UTC
If i were to guess who's top in the msg/game, it would be djbent. she has over 300 as well. i think it was up in the 320+ range. although, the one game i played with her, she didn't talk much. course that could be because she was eliminated pretty quickly...
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

btw, if anyone is ever interested in the statistics that i perform on the game, let me know. you can email me at [email protected] and I can send you them.

Though the patter of messages to win/draw percentage is by now means perfect. As I've got an average of 125 messages a game, and a 57% win draw ration, But once you get above 100 messages a game it starts to even off a bit more, and you all do well.

(For curiosities sake I pulled all my gunboats out of my record to see how many messages I sent per press game and the result is 138 per game, with a recalculated win-draw ration of 60.5%)

Point is you don't have to send 300 messages a game to do well but the more you communicate the better off you are.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
08 Apr 11 UTC
@Tru Ninja, did you calculate messages per game year against result... after all, better players play for much longer.
hellalt (24 D)
08 Apr 11 UTC
I think 120-140 msgs/game are just enough.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

messages per year would be interesting.

But is there any way to get number of characters/bytes/letters/digits per game or per year? I know some people write a lot of small messages and others, like I, write long multi-paragraph messages.
Eliphas (100 D)

Should draws even be counted when considering how good a player is? Aren't most of them fake? Or is just with live games?
Alderian (2425 D(S))
08 Apr 11 UTC
The ideal game would have lots of going back and forth but would ultimately end in a draw. In a game of competent players, if someone wins, it is because at least one person made a horrible blunder.

Certainly the draws in live games where it was done because it was getting late, versus the game having no play left in it, would be nice to not consider, but there isn't a way to do that. Draw's in non-live games don't usually happen like that.

I could almost say the same thing about live games. Not having played more than a couple of live games, I assume that wins there are often due to key positions going CD. But I could be wrong.

Maybe it would just be nice to separate live games from non-live games. Communication may be less of a factor in live games since other factors may be larger.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
08 Apr 11 UTC
@TGM: I simply took the messages they sent, counted the games they played that were not gunboat games or public messaging games and simply did the math. Messages per year would be a bit difficult as many of the people don't have much in the way of games played. I had a minimum of 10 games as a requisite for the count and I took random samples from the Ghost-Rating list to produce an unbiased statistic taken from a simple-random-sample.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
08 Apr 11 UTC
@Eliphas: I counted draws since they are reasonable. A draw is simply a win shared by a group and you cannot possibly draw (unless in a 7-way draw) unless you effectively communicate with others on the map.

@Alderian: Yes, live games are a problem since in many of the live games I examined, in most games there were at least one or more CD'd countries. They have to be calculated, however, because it's unreasonable to separate them from the message count. Also, how many players have played only games where no one CD'd? I would venture to say none or nearing none.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
08 Apr 11 UTC
@TGM: I misunderstood games/year--this would still be a bit problematic because more messages are sent early on and less later in the game. Thus you dont get a true normal curve, rather you get a curve that is skewed-right and you have to make additional changes to the statistics and other assumptions in order to have semi accurate measurements
Crazyter (1335 D(G))
09 Apr 11 UTC
Also I had one game where Madmarx and I got into a VERY long debate-(we may have set the world record for messages in 1 game on this site) an that probably has skewed my stats on game messages.

Am I the only one in looking forward with eager anticipation to an Icelandic default on their loans? After Iceland then maybe Portugal, Greece, Ireland etc....That should wipe the smile off a few self-satisfied faces! In fact if I were them I would act in concert and to hell with the 'credit rating agencies'.

I've made a few changes to the tournaments.webdiplomacy.net site, including adding pages for FAQs, a Glossary and external links. The idea is that if something turns up like this, it can be added to these pages, and so newcomers (if they find the site) will be able to find out things much more easily. PLEASE help me to make these worthwhile by submitting content in this thread

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: What (Book) Brings You Here?
We all have so many discussions and bring so many different perspectives to said discussions that this time I wanted to ask...what book or books do YOU hold most dear, that you feel you can look to in a time of need and find meaning and say "Yes...yes, that's what I believe, and I can persevere!" Are these religious texts? Philosophical texts? Knowing some of you...perhaps mathematical texts that'd make my head spin? ;)
