Live Game Etiquette
I'm curious to hear different takes on live game etiquette. If there are no-shows, or players miss the first phase, it seems to be that the game should be cancelled or at least a draw. However, if one player is the benefiary of said no-show, then he or she has little or no incentive to vote for a draw or cancellation, forcing all the other players to participate in a game in which he or she has a distinct starting advantage.

Question about a bounce move
...
maltizok (787 D)
19 Feb 11 UTC
if there are 2 units Aa and 2 opposing units Bb and Aa tries to do moves A-support move to b from a and a-move to b, and the opposing units do moves B-move to A and b-move to a, why dont the units just bounce?!? A by getting attacked from B would have its support cut that its giving to a correct? so why then does a still push into b when it should b a 1v1 power from the support being cut or am i missing something with this? it's happend to me before so im just curious why that happens.
Centurian (3257 D)
19 Feb 11 UTC
Its kind of confusing the way you have laid it out, but territories under attack can't break support on attacks against themselves. So in your scenario, B's move fails to do anything and B is dislodged, while b moves into a unopposed.
maltizok (787 D)

maybe i should use places instead of letters so i can make this easier to follow.(on the ancient med map and all units are tanks)
player1 has Venetia and Vindobona
player2 has Illyria and Dalmatia

Player1 moves Venetia to Dalmatia supported by Vindobona
Player2 moves Dalmatia to Venetia and Illyria to Vindobona

As far as i know the attack on Vindobona from Illyria should cut the support that Vind is giving Venetia shouldn't it? Which would make Dalmatia moving on Venetia and Venetia moving on Dalmatia a 1v1 power so everything should bounce...Right?
For some reason something like this happend to me and even though Illyria attacked Vind to cut the support, Venetia still pushed through into Dalmatia which just doesn't make any sense to me. (and yes i know this could all be avoided if the defending player would just support hold each of their units with the other)
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
19 Feb 11 UTC
In the situation you outlined, everything would bounce. If this isn't what happened, clearly other moves were made. If you aren't convinced, you can PM me the link and I'll double check.
maltizok (787 D)
19 Feb 11 UTC
i'll have to find the game it was in because that DID happen to me, it wasnt the same places and it was a long time ago so i'll have to look for the game but when i find it i can pm it to you

Oh, if this isn't an ongoing game, you can jsut post the link right here.

make certain the targets of player b's weren't reversed. if they were, then a would get b's territory and b's other unit would move in behind a's move.

@abgemacht
i took a quick glance through my games and i may have missed it but i couldnt find the game where someting like that happend but i want to try it out just to be certain that what your saying is right because im almost positive that is exactly what i did and they still pushed through.
maltizok (787 D)
19 Feb 11 UTC
if we can get enough people to do it we could try it out just like i used for my example, we would only need to play till the 2nd year most likely and then could cancel the game. anybody interested?
Centurian (3257 D)

Here are the results. I used Austria and Germany.

Austria:

A gal-> boh *Bounced with boh (1 against 1)*
A vie Supports A gal -> boh *Support cut by Move from Tyrolia

Germany:

A boh ->gal *Bounced with gal (1 against 1)*
A tyr->vie *Bounced with vie (1 against 1)*

19 Feb 11 UTC
ok, thanks. i could have sworn that it wouldnt do that but guess im wrong =P
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
19 Feb 11 UTC
Do you understand why?

When a unit is hit, it's support is broken. That's the end of that. So, you're left with two units just hitting each other.

Now, a unit cannot break support against itself. So, if there was no unit it Ill and Dal moved to Vin, then Dal would be dislodged because it's then 2 against 1. Perhaps this is the situation you're thinking of?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
19 Feb 11 UTC
That was worded poorly: A unit cannot break the support of a unit that it is under attack from.
maltizok (787 D)
19 Feb 11 UTC
No i understand why it does that but for some reason i remember it not doing that in one of my games. i tried it out on purpose in that game because i knew if i just support held both my units with the other it would still keep them from advancing but i want to see if attacking them each with a unit would do the same thing and it didnt, they still pushed through and i was really confused how that had worked
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
19 Feb 11 UTC
Well, it's very likely that you remember it wrong, or orders were issued incorrectly. But, as they say, you can't have a murder without a body. : )
maltizok (787 D)
19 Feb 11 UTC
i think i may have come up for a reason why it worked, going back to my example2
Venetia moves to Illyria supported by Vindobona, Dalmatia moves to Venetia, and Illyria moves to Vindobona. What i think might have happened was sinve Venetia moved to Illyria with support from Vindobona which stopped Illyria from being able to attack Vindobona which would make sense why it worked then because the support was never cut and then Dalmatia would just move to Venetia since the unit from Venetia is now in Illyria.. Do you follow what im saying?
maltizok (787 D)
19 Feb 11 UTC
i think that could be what happend because if Illyria is getting taken over by Venetia how would they be able to attack Vindobona, they would have to retreat instead

Ilyria's move to Vin doesn't cut Vin's support of the move to Ilyria since Ilyria is the target province. A Venetia moves into Ilyria with the Vin support. Ilyria is dislodged.

Since A Venetia is leaving Venetia, Venetia is an open province for Dalmatia to move into, bypassing the skirmish to their north.

SacredDigits (102 D)

Double attack would work if you attacked the correct places with the correct units, but double support hold always works (in that situation).

@mal

Yes, that would force a disband; however, that's very different from your original example.
maltizok (787 D)
20 Feb 11 UTC
i fail to see how that is different since to me i said it all the same, but ok
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
20 Feb 11 UTC
Seriously? In the first example you sand VEN-DAL and in the second you said VEN-Ill. Those are the same to you?
maltizok (787 D)
20 Feb 11 UTC
oh i got it now, i switched where is getting attacked when i explained why the double attack wouldnt have worked. thanks everyone =)
maltizok (787 D)
20 Feb 11 UTC
i had to go back and reread my example because i thought i explained it the same way both times but after you mentioned they were different i had to check
maltizok (787 D)
20 Feb 11 UTC
so basically the double attack thing has a very low success rate while double support hold (at least in these circumstances) is 100% guarantee to work
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
20 Feb 11 UTC
Yes, in that particularly case, it would have been better to just sh each unit.
Draugnar (0 DX)
20 Feb 11 UTC
actually, in this example, the double attack has a 50/50 chance of success.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
20 Feb 11 UTC
Agreed, but sh has 100% of success.

abge: how do you test these moves in jdip. I downloaded the programme, but can only start new games. If I throw in A gal-> boh straight the obvious answer is 'No unit in Galicia'.
Do you first need to order all units to move into the situations you want to test? Sounds a bit too complicated.
