The game Hello my Brothers 3
It was clear from the first year that 3- 5 players were working together. That ruins the live games. Russia, England, and France made moves no one would make in a game with unknowns.

Pre-Pause for US Storm?
So pretty much the whole northern US is getting whacked by a storm, and I know I'm not the only person who might be without power for a good long time. Perhaps those of us in the path should vote pause, with the understanding that the other players should also pause if we vanish for a couple of days.

Leisurely Playing the Game of Diplomacy
Perhaps it's just me, but do some people take this game way too seriously? Here I am, playing Diplomacy for fun, countlessly running into people, other players, that I can't help but to assume have a dictionary nearby whenever they play the game. Intimidation via vernacular, if you will. And to be honest, I find this concept incredibly humorous. Anybody else?

Pick up Italy in a locked 24 hr low-stakes WTA game?
gameID=46247

Italy is at 7 SCs but about to hit 5. The players in the game have been very dependable -- no other NMRs up to 1905. A good bet for a decent player who enjoys negotiation. The password is playfair.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: "Will you be kind enough to justify your existence?"
The above quote is from my SECOND-favorite playwright of all-time (we ALL know who my favorite is) Mr. George Bernard Shaw, who was staunchly of the opinion that life SHOULD have a purpose, and that if it didn't...well, he didn't look kindly on that, but let's focus on the positive--IS there such a thing as "purpose/justifying your existence?" Is it granted naturally, or obtained? Can it be lost? WHAT IS IT? And if there IS no justification for existence...what THEN?

Anonymous games are evil - discuss
I consider FTF Diplomacy to be the purest. When playing FTF, you often know who are the players you are playing against, you know their history and how they play. This allows a more intricate diplomacy. By playing anonymous games on WebDiplomacy, we ignore the most fundamental side of FTF Diplomacy - history.

PPSC v WTA: A top 100 GR player fails to understand the controversy around 17 17 games
As so eloquently stated in a post yesterday, "PPSC is NOT a gentleman's game. PPSC isn't anything good."

Please elaborate. I promise a good faith attempt to try to understand why PPSC games are inherently evil.

In memory of charlesf
charlesf appeared on the webdip scene on December 10th of 2010. He had one bad game experience so came to the forum to both talk about how this site could be better and to get a better quality game going.

He was last seen on January 10th of 2011 when he had the audacity to leave his country in Civil Disorder in that game.

Diplomacy: Best approach?
I'd just like to discuss about how to approach in compromise and resolve through diplomacy. I'd like to know your guys opinions about what you think is the best form of diplomacy.

I'd also like to ask your guys opinions about what basis you guys form when creating an alliance. As in, do you guys form rules to be kept when you guys make an alliance?
SacredDigits (102 D)

I usually specify what target I'm looking at, one or two SC's I'm looking to get, one or two SC's I'm looking for my ally to get, and one or two places that we either bounce or agree to keep empty. Then I listen to what he has to say, and respond back.

Very often, I start out with something VERY vague, like "How do you feel about Austria?" If the answer is "I like them", then I like them too and suggest something else.
Putin33 (111 D)
28 Jan 11 UTC
The less you can depend on diplomacy the better. #1 thing is to avoid isolation or a counterbalancing alliance against you. I usually have a target in mind but if that target puts me at odds with all of my neighbors then obviously it needs to be changed. Depending on how desperate I need a friend, I offer one-sided offers to get them on my side. But the drawback obviously is that your 'friend' will exploit your generosity and just turn around and stab you anyway. It's always a crapshoot, that's what makes diplomacy interesting.

As for rules, there's almost always a space in which neither side should cross else it be considered a threat/violation of the alliance (Russia % Austria have Galicia, Turkey & Russia have the Black Sea & Armenia, England & France have the Channel, Italy and France have Piedmont, etc). 99% of the time when these 'red lines' are crossed it's an obvious stab, although sometimes they're just "passing through" or whatever. They better have a damn good explanation otherwise prepare to defend yourself.
Furball (237 D)
28 Jan 11 UTC
I agree very much with both your points Putin33. I have experienced those instances as well many times. And I have seen many players that also start with many vague intros like, how do you feel about this or that. just curious though, how would you persuade someone good enough to block all other proposes?

And should diplomacy always be about expansionism?
SacredDigits (102 D)
28 Jan 11 UTC
If there was a surefire way to always convince someone to join you, we wouldn't all still be playing the game. The best we can do is give tips.
SacredDigits (102 D)
28 Jan 11 UTC
And no, it doesn't always have to be about expansionism. Often, if I'm France, I shoot Italy a quick, "Hey, what's up, can we just agree that we have bigger fish to fry and leave Piedmont, Gulf of Lyon, and Western Med empty?"

Or if I'm Turkey I'll say hello to France and see if they feel like talking about what they're up to.
Putin33 (111 D)
28 Jan 11 UTC
Expanding too quickly can alienate your allies. I once played a game as Italy in which other countries were tipping me off as to where Austria would move, I ended up taking two Austrian territories plus Greece as a result. The very next turn I found myself attacked on all fronts.
Furball (237 D)

What if you don't expand?
kaner406 (356 D)
28 Jan 11 UTC
some of my very favorite games that I have played have involved me taking second (or third place) throughout much of the game - only to draw later on. Diplomacy is not about ALWAYS winning (which is good and gives me wet dreams) but it is also about working the situations as they occur.
Furball (237 D)
28 Jan 11 UTC
Yes, but in those situations, how do you work them out?
What kind of diplomacy is it that you use?
Putin33 (111 D)
28 Jan 11 UTC
You have to expand, but if the rest of the board thinks there is little in your way to prevent you from running rampant all over the board and they aren't busy trying to liberate their own home territories, then they'll coalition against you unless they are already too committed to the battle they are in.

The key is - expand quickly when your potential rivals are preoccupied, expand slowly and reassure your neighbors if they don't have any strong commitments yet.
Putin33 (111 D)
29 Jan 11 UTC
By the way - if anybody messages you with a 5 page message about how they're going to work with you - laying out all of their moves and your moves - its a transparent stab.
This has happened to me 3 times, every single after these long winded posts I get stabbed. I don't know why they bother with the verbiage.

@Putin
Some players, especially those who started in PBEM, right that much to everybody every turn. What should tip you off is when somebody who normally doesn't write like that suddenly does. Or when somebody who normally writes 5 pages a turn only writes you a few sentences.
SacredDigits (102 D)
29 Jan 11 UTC
I've also found that when someone who's been chatty all along suddenly clams up, they're usually coming for you.

Is it ideal in creating a global alliance from the beginning of the game?
I think I know which game you are referring to haha. And no, its not, in my opinion. Its best on the world map to find one, or two - you're better off with two - solid allies and roll with it from there. Had our game kept going, Oz, F-A and I probably would've won it
Furball (237 D)

Nah it's done, Mother Nature assured that. I enjoyed all of the random banter in the beginning though, it might be worth an EOG thread after we close it up.
Furball (237 D)

haha, it was quite random thinking bout it xD
whats an EOG may i ask?
Draugnar (0 DX)

EoG = End of Game

Some players like to post a summary of the game and their thoughts during the various turns. I'm not so good about doing this as I don't always recall my thoughts unless I take notes along the way plus it takes a lot of effort, almost as much as playing the game. But it can be fun to read them.
