New game, serious discussion
Hey,

I'm looking for six more players who would be interested in a game with long-ish deadlines and ample banter. If you're interested, let me know. The long deadlines are designed to give you no excuse for dropping, as well as to communicate a lot. If you're not down with this, the game's not for you.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Do Holy Water and Logical Oil Mix?
Probably one of the two topics I discuss with people the most--the other being the whole merit/greatness vs. regularity idea--comes via my personal stance that you CANNOT, SHOULD NOT say, one way or the other, that you "KNOW" that God exists. Logic and Faith have never been great friends--Logic and Religion less so--but SHOULD they mix...or are God/faith-based ideals and Logic Holy Water and Oil? Should we EVER take a Leap of Faith?

New End of Year Award Proposal
I think an addition should be added for the end of the year awards. A rookie of the year. The award winner would be using the same stats and formulas used for deciding the player of the year, except all the candidates would have to be in their first year of WebDiplomacy. Thoughts?

Surrendering?
Ive noticed open games where people have surrendered their countries but I cant seem to find a place where I can surrender one of my current games. Any help is appreciated
figlesquidge (2131 D)

You'll get a lot more of this coming soon, but the simple answer is:
DON'T SURRENDER.
Play each and every game as best you can until its end, it would be bad sportsmanship not to. Imagine how you would feel if you started to control a game, then a weak player just stopped bothering, another nation took their SCs and all your hard work was undone. Also, you never know - until that last unit&SC are gone you can still win a game.

I realize this. I do play games to the very last but when it comes to a game where i have one supply center that is completely surrounded and my only option is to hold, it gets pointless. I am a couple points from being able to join another game and the points from surrendering would allow me to play a game where i actually have a chance.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Well you never know: offer the players around you supports against the others and you might be able to broker survival in some way.

And you call yourself a spartan.
Spartan22 (344 D)
28 Jan 11 UTC
Thats possible but highly unlikely. I realize you are attempting to keep sportsmanship in the games but it gets to the point where its unfair that i have to wait 24 or 48 hours for everyone to put their orders in when i have one option. Is there anyway you can just tell me how to surrender?
SacredDigits (102 D)

There is no way to do it with the system. The best possibility is finding a way to move out of your last center and hope someone will take the low hanging fruit. But that's kind of annoying too. I'm currently in a game where England never got off the ground and, in like 1904, just decided to walk out of their home SC's and let France have them. As Austria, and one of the points leaders, this really annoyed me because it gave someone a pretty unfair advantage of 3 SC's (well, two really, since France already had one dead to rights).
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
28 Jan 11 UTC
It's obvious that you can't surrender. Just play the game. I'm pretty sure I would loathe to have a surrenderer...uh play in the same game as I. It would kinda ruin the game.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
28 Jan 11 UTC
"Thats possible but highly unlikely." - that depends, is two neighbours are desperately trying to stop a third player from winning, your single supply center may be key to victory.

also there have been cases of people coming back from 1 to win.

Sometimes the threat to 'throw the game' to an opponent is enough to encourage a change in the diplomacy (not that you do it - although it has been done)

Try to keep some points in reserve next time. You will regret it if you resign, once that is on your record people will think twice before playing with you.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
28 Jan 11 UTC
By the way, if you do drop out of the game, you don't get the refill to 100 D. That only happens if you are actually eliminated from the game, or when the game normally concludes.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Wow...Worst Spartan ever...

Can you imagine being at the Battle of Thermopylae with this guy?

"But, Leonidas, it's not fair that we have to fight all these Persians! Can't we just surrender and fight somewhere else?"

But, seriously, Spartan, if you have "Resigns" in your profile, people aren't going to want to play with you.
Indybroughton (3407 D(G))
28 Jan 11 UTC
That's why he is Spartan22. Spartans 1-21 will fight to the death. He considered the name "SpartanLite" but it was already taken.
Indybroughton (3407 D(G))

One other, more serious suggestion. I see that in six games, you have a total of 6 messages to other players. Diplomacy is a game of...well, "diplomacy". You'll have greater success if you talk to the other players. You may find, then, that you are less often in this situation.
SacredDigits (102 D)
28 Jan 11 UTC
I was going to use the "some of them might be gunboats" defense, but it looks like only one was.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
28 Jan 11 UTC
I only see 3 games completed. The number of messages sent only updates when a game ends. But still, 3 messages for 2 or 3 games isn't going to get you far. This game is called Diplomacy, not Risk.

@Spartan - Even if you quit, you won't get the points back resignations lose the points they put into the game.

he will he has less than a 100. shame on you spartan im ashamed of my resigns...... though many of them are because im a chronic live player and shit happens.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
28 Jan 11 UTC
the thing about diplo vs other games is that this is a 7 player game.

quitting tips the balance of the game. in chess, if you surrender, the game just ends, but it keeps going in diplo.

so you really shouldnt quit games.
Draugnar (0 DX)
28 Jan 11 UTC
no he won't. at least not until another game ends after he has resigned.

American History
Alright, I've got an American History Exam tomorrow, and I think I ought to spend some time studying the history of your slaves/ coloured people and your many civil rights movements. I'm pretty sure that's something that'll be addressed, and wanted to know what the rest of my fellow Dipers (as I think I will now call you all) think about this highly controversial topic.
