New game, serious discussion
Hey,

I'm looking for six more players who would be interested in a game with long-ish deadlines and ample banter. If you're interested, let me know. The long deadlines are designed to give you no excuse for dropping, as well as to communicate a lot. If you're not down with this, the game's not for you.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Do Holy Water and Logical Oil Mix?
Probably one of the two topics I discuss with people the most--the other being the whole merit/greatness vs. regularity idea--comes via my personal stance that you CANNOT, SHOULD NOT say, one way or the other, that you "KNOW" that God exists. Logic and Faith have never been great friends--Logic and Religion less so--but SHOULD they mix...or are God/faith-based ideals and Logic Holy Water and Oil? Should we EVER take a Leap of Faith?

New End of Year Award Proposal
I think an addition should be added for the end of the year awards. A rookie of the year. The award winner would be using the same stats and formulas used for deciding the player of the year, except all the candidates would have to be in their first year of WebDiplomacy. Thoughts?

Retirement
sad but true
Agent K (0 DX)

Id like to announce my retirement from Webdiplomacy. the truth of the matter is that it has gotten too repetitive and boring. I know that BigZombieDude took a break because of this same reason. Ill finish out my tournament games, but since i dont care too much im just gonna enter moves and be done with it. As for the School of War game, the mods or people in charge can figure out if they wasnt to replace me. Im just assuming that if I can't put forth 100 percent effort, it would be better to replace me so the students can gain the most knowledge from it.

Also if anybody has any suggestions of how to remedy this newfound boredom, i would love to hear them.

Agent K-Are you in the GFDT? signed up for Masters and/or Leagues? What about all those games you are registered for?

I too was needing a break recently, but relented and signed up for those events.

I always find that surrendering all of my points to smaller players re-invigorates my will to play. but where could we find a small player who would accept those points??? *subtly points at self*

Have a go at some variants - I'm finding I'm spending more thought time dedicated to examining other lines of play on other maps some with slight variations of the rules.

@ Crazyter. Im in the GFDT, but neither of the other two. the main thing that bothers me is that most players arent willing to try new things out.

perhaps i will just play world games from now on
maltizok (787 D)

idk who created webdiplomacy but i think its a great game, i do agree they should make new maps. i think that a USA map variant and variants such as taking the world map and splitting it into smaller maps. we already have a europe map but what about a map of USA Canada and Mexico? or other things like that. idk who to talk to so that those maps could be created but i would love to try some of them out if they are ever made

i have a question for the mods. is there any way to set up games where you can pick your country? i think ive found the solution to my problem, because im only really interested in the diplomatic diversity playing Italy offers. So, is there any way to always be assigned the italian?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
24 Jan 11 UTC
Yeah, I'd say play a few live games, or try to find some people in your area that play f2f.

It gives diplo a whole new lease on life.

And also, try experimenting! Instead of doing what you know will work, try something that *might* work and will be interesting in the process!

Who knows you may end up inventing the next lepanto.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Yes, ask very nicely and agree with the other players first!

However, advanced warning: I'm going to take a long break from the end of the month so sort it out quickly

If anyone wants to start a game with set countries instead of random ones, I'm happy to accommodate and won't be taking a long break.

To accommodate this properly there are a few things that would need to be done in certain ways.

1. Agree who gets what in a forum thread, as well as the other game attributes. This should be very clear in the thread.
2. Create game as no messaging with a 7 day phase length and password. Other game options should be set as desired.
3. Send PMs to join.
4. Once all have joined, PM me with a link to the thread and game and I'll set the countries and alter the phase length and messaging as necessary.

Note, I am only offering my services, so don't expect the time and effort from every mod just because I'm willing to do it. We're each donating our time to help this site in whichever way we can.

Just play less. You've obviously mastered the game, only natural that you will get bored with it. Take a break, enjoy somethings different, and then play the odd game only if you really want to.

Well, if you want to sing out, sing out
And if you want to be free, be free
'Cause there's a million things to be
You know that there are

Oh, and that was a month ago and I've since been to the doctor and found out my blood sugar was 3x normal when I had fasted and my thyroid had shut down even further. Doubled my thyroid med and added a new med to my diabetes meds to try and bring them under control. So do you want me to go medieval on your ass? Or will you lay off and let me bring things in check? Huh, iDick?

@AgentK--Play for fun. I saw someone commented about trying new tactics. I play live games and it is more fun to me than playing 2-3 day phases. It's quick and when you try new tactics/alliances it is quite fun. MAke it your mission to form an AT alliance that splits 17/17.
hellalt (24 D)
26 Jan 11 UTC
Why does everyone think AT alliances are that hard? I do them all the time.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
26 Jan 11 UTC
It takes players who understand that you can swap centers around to maintain balance with Austria having slightly more centers than Turkey. At least that has been the key for me. Newer players can have a hard time with that concept I think. I like the AT alliance.

I imagine getting a 17/17 split could be hard as it requires getting into MAO from a long ways away.
The Czech (40398 D(S))
26 Jan 11 UTC
That's why I said 17/17. Can you name a harder alliance to get 17/17?
Babak (26982 D(B))

Agent... put up your points.

get a 1500 or 2000 point game going... put up your points and you'll realize how important that ONE game then becomes for you ;) I'll even be willing to play if you want to be italy ;)

1500 pts and we can set up our preferences like in PBEM games with a GM... Aldrean has volunteered to do it. ... 48hr deadlines to accommodate the high level of diplomacy. I guess anonymous cant work since we'll be picking our countries in public.

my pref list would be FRGETIA. if you can get 5 others, we'll have a good game and you'll have your adrenaline pumping! well... until the rest of us kick your ass =P
figlesquidge (2131 D)
28 Jan 11 UTC
You can pick your games privately if you agree some method for choosing them (like I did for smiles game)

American History
Alright, I've got an American History Exam tomorrow, and I think I ought to spend some time studying the history of your slaves/ coloured people and your many civil rights movements. I'm pretty sure that's something that'll be addressed, and wanted to know what the rest of my fellow Dipers (as I think I will now call you all) think about this highly controversial topic.
