Wherefore art thou been there?
Is the above legitimate King James English? Was "to be" conjugated in the with "to be" rather than "to have" in the perfect tenses?

@Draugnar - you are exactly right in saying that some religions "EVEN Christians" believe in independent study. The phrase "being a good Barean" in Christian circles is a reference to the people of Barea, who when taught would then go home and study to ensure that what they were taught holds true with the writings they already had.

The church I attend often spends as much time studying the history, culture of politics that were in play at the time and place the scripture was written as we do studying the scripture itself. Without understand WHY something was said and WHO it was said to, the scripture is very often misleading, misused, misunderstood, etc.

The problem - as I have stated previously - is that most "religious" people are hardly believers in God. that is to say, they "believe" in God if asked, but if they *truly* believed in some all-powerful being that can snap you out of existinece with a thought, they'd probably do a hell of a lot better job at living the way he asks you to. Most people live more in fear of their parents/principles/bosses/government/etc than they do their "God"...and yet they won't deny His existence. The problem with this half-ass belief system is then that most people have NO IDEA what their Bible or particular choice of religious tomes has to say; they know few verses here and there, they cherry-pick verses that please them, they don't understand what the whole thing PUT TOGETHER means, and therefore they live like schmucks and tend to offend a lot of people. But does this mean religion is bad? Nooo...it just means that the worshipers are lazy putzes and need to shut up about their beliefs until they get a grip on exactly what it is they believe in!

That being said, it is a lot easier to be an atheist, relatively speaking. To be a good Christian/Muslim/Bhudist/Whatever generally takes a *lot* of time and study and devotion. when people fail at this, that non-believers LOVE to point their fingers and ridicule and point out how stupid and naive the believer is. It's easy to do, and yet for the Christian - if any of them knew anything about science - they could just as easily deride the average atheist for not having any idea what he or she believes.

mmh, I'm not sure Jack Klein, in the case of the catholic church, their dogmas are good enough to sort out the difficulty you point out (first of all, bible actually doesn't play such an important role in the catholic dogmas, you might read, for instance, the wikipedia entry about this)

so, krellin,
atheism is a well defined belief system but average atheist has no idea what he or she beliefs? explain me that

I'd say the Catholic Church is already bought into relativism as is... once you can have people come along and define new beliefs as they see fit, it basically comes down to whatever the prevailing zeitgeist is.

I mean, that's the position of the Traditional Catholic Church (that reject the Vatican councils)... "If we are wrong now, then you were wrong then."

But then, this is all splitting hairs in my opinion about fiction. :P
@ Jack

There is much more area between relativism and complete a sola scriptura interpretation of the Holy Bible than you seem to be willing to accept. Accepting something as a parable doesn't mean that it isn't inspired by God nor does it mean that it doesn't have a true message to teach. People aren't necessarily trashing this part and adhereing to that part merely because they don't stone their neighbor for working on the Sabbath. The entire Holy Bible, taken in context, shows a movement from an Age of Law to and Age of Grace. There is a pretty good reason for that. We had the law for centuries and were screwing it up. Christ said "Let you who is without sin throw the first stone". It seems to me that he was turning the law around to what it was supposed to be in the first place, an internal discipline rather than an external tool for hypocrits to subjugate others. There are certainly going to be people who will disagree with me, but the war between hypocrits and honest seekers is still alive and well (arguably alive and well in each inhabitant of earth).

Not sure where this conversation went between now and when i wrote the below, but i don't have time to catch up now... maybe in work tomorrow.

'I think it is the influence of religion on public policy which most concerns atheists, especially dawkins, though he blames religion for stupidity and failed science teaching (or 'critical thinking' ). Now i would mostly blame the lack of teaching of critical reasoning on the school curriculum and not on organised religion. (whatever can be said about religion and learning in the past 2,000 years of western history, i'm sure it has been intertwined with education in the past, it has had a changing relationship in europe)

The facts raised here so far claiming that many 'religious' people don't know a thing about the doctrine of their stated religion yet the lobbyists of that religion still claim to be representing this number of people is a problem in some countries (Ireland for example has ~86.8% Roman Catholic, however i seriously doubt that church attendance is 3.8 million per week. (i can't give realistic figures, but everyone assume everyone else is Catholic, and nobody cares that nobody goes to mass... )

In fact i know a student union lobbyist who would claim to have thousands of students behind him when lobbying the government, but i know as one of those students that most of my class didn't give a shit about what the Union of Students did or said...

Anglican: You misunderstand me(and I'm probably not being clear on this point)

I consider Jesus of Nazareth one of the best examples of humanism. His Sermon on the Mount has many principles that I am grateful that exist now. I do reject all of the supernatural, but that rejection doesn't take away from the admiration of the contributions he made to humanity.

But I do reject the supernatural, and agree with Gandhi that "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

Harmony between advanced and underdeveloped countries
So, my last thread I posted was about the great war between USA and China because of exchange rates. I also noted about Japan declaring war against the Yen (china's bill).
This time I want to point out a more long-term subject which we will have to look into as time passes.
"How will we create harmony between advanced and underdeveloped countries?"
Write what you think.

CHINA, USA WAR!!
Lately, a sort of war is happening between China and USA based on exchange rates. China has a fixed exchange rate. USA and the international society is pressuring China to change its policy to free changing exchange rates based on imports and exports. USA claims that "Chinese bills should be 40% higher in value than it is now." "This policy is disrupting the balance of the flow of money." ...

Oh man... This sucks...
So I'm in this game and kicking ass. But now the remaining players are going to band together and force me to draw. Good play on their part. No problem with it at all. But I'm so much higher rated in GR, that I'll *lose* GR on anything more than a 4 way draw. We are at 6 right now...

Mornington Crescent
Anyone fancy a game of Mornington Crescent? I propose the Simplified Version (Stovold’s Defence is still allowable during Forward Triangulation, but Back Doubling may only be attempted after a Northern Approach). Mainline stations are wild.

I'll start conservatively with: Tottenham Court Road.
