Wherefore art thou been there?
Is the above legitimate King James English? Was "to be" conjugated in the with "to be" rather than "to have" in the perfect tenses?

Adjusting strategy for absentees
Is it ok to change your strategy to account for other people missing their orders?
groza528 (518 D)
19 Oct 10 UTC
I'm new to the board and so far I've been noticing a fair degree of absenteeism. Sometimes a player misses a season, sometimes they go into civil disorder, but either way can have a drastic effect on the game. I find that I adjust my strategy to account for absenteeism. For example, I may leave my flank less defended if I know that the neighbor behind me hasn't moved in the last year and a half. Sometimes I base my overarching strategy on who is in civil disorder -- usually by heading for the guy who has the most to gain from the missing player.
Part of me doesn't like the idea that my play should change due to the truancy of others. But another part says that CDs are unfortunately a part of the game and it's up to everyone else to make sure they don't give someone else an unfair advantage. What do the rest of you think about changing the play to deal with CDs?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
19 Oct 10 UTC
Of course. NMR/CDs suck, but they do happen. If you don't take advantage of it, someone else will.

If there is a CD very early, I'm in favor of cancelling the game, but it's up to the players.
Rancher (1652 D(S))
19 Oct 10 UTC
yeh, a CD very early should mean a cancel, but I have found few here willing to do that, as the player who most benefits typically refuses to cancel
groza528 (518 D)
19 Oct 10 UTC
Hmm. I didn't even think of canceling. I've got two games going where someone NMRed in the first year. Three actually, but in one of them the player got replaced.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

When you start playing with better people, that becomes less of an issue.
yayager (384 D)
19 Oct 10 UTC
Oh hell yes. Fact is that's the way the game flows and if you don't adjust to the realities of the game, someone else will and frankly crush you. I will say that it's often better to try and think a few steps ahead, since people tend to make mistakes when going after lame supply centers affected by CD. Also, after 1901 you can never be sure that someone won't pick up the CD and change the dynamic of the board yet again.

Long story short anyone that makes a comment about going for CDed SCs as dishonorable is speaking out of both ends of their body.
Rancher (1652 D(S))
19 Oct 10 UTC
@abgemacht -- I think you're right with your point, the problem is that there are some of us who have been playing Diplomacy for 30 years but only a few months or so on-line or on this site, so we aren't invited into the private games, don't have the points built up for the high stakes ones, and therefore play in the bulk of the games here where people just won't cancel because they perceive an advantage
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
19 Oct 10 UTC
Yes, there is certainly an issue with veteran players who are new to the site. My recommendation would be to start a thread to try to get people like you to join up in a game together. You may even attract some of the good players on this site with your impressive dip dossiers.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
19 Oct 10 UTC
I disagree about canceling if someone NMRs/CDs early. That would encourage people to CD if they get a country they don't like or feel like the diploming is not going well. Draw instead and teach that person to never give up.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
19 Oct 10 UTC
I don't follow you, Alderian.

If the game is cancelled, the person who CDs doesn't get their points back, correct? So, by not cancelling, you're only punishing the people that want a legit game.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

@abge - I would have thought everyone got their points back from a cancelled game, but don't quote me on that.

abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@figle

If that's true, that's bull shit. If you CD, you shouldn't get points back. Is there a way to confirm this?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
19 Oct 10 UTC
Yeh, check the source code - something I haven't done
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

hahaha

By "way to confirm" it was implied that I meant "other than me personally looking at the code." : )
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

So i found the following method:
void setCancelled( )

Unlike the others for draw, win, etc, this one doesn't have a $winnings parameter to give people a certain share. That makes me think that even people who resigned get points back? maybe?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
19 Oct 10 UTC
I know :)
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
19 Oct 10 UTC
However, there are also the following:

void setLeft( )

The user has left the game and can be taken over by other players, however he hasn't completely left, so he can't yet be supplemented.

void setResigned( )

A user which left has now had the game finished, give supplement, and will be sent a message back.

Does anyone know what supplement refers to?

When I've been in cancelled games, I get a note that I get my points back. I like the idea of the draw, but a fair number of players would lose GR for doing that.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
19 Oct 10 UTC
@pastor,

But had you CD'd? The question is if players that CD get their points back from a cancelled game.
peterwiggin (15158 D)
19 Oct 10 UTC
@pastoralan
Depends how early you draw. Draws before a certain date don't count towards GR.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
19 Oct 10 UTC
@pastorlan, I believe it is games that are drawn within the first three years are ignored by the GR calculations. But I am not positive about the year. But I am pretty sure. Definitely safe within the first two years.

@abgemacht, I believe that players in CD get their points back when a game is canceled. I, however, have no proof since I have not going into CD myself. My understanding is that everyone gets their points back.

It would be easy enough to test. Setup a game, wait for a CD or have myself or another mod force a country into CD, and then force cancel the game. But someone would get a black mark on their record for that CD. I think. Could be done on olidip.net I suppose with a temporary account used for the testing but then you'd need a mod there to help, or just wait it out.

The other reason why a draw make sense, even if the CD person didn't get points back on a cancel, is that the other players put in time and effort and deserve to get something for it and the person that ruined the game is the one that should pay IMHO. A draw accomplishes this.

^^ Which brings us round to the question on what a rating system exists for
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
19 Oct 10 UTC
@Alderian

But if it's 1902, people haven't put much time into it. That's when I was saying games should be cancelled. Plus, as has been mentioned, often times a 6 person draw can really hurt someone's GR, so a draw does not accomplish that.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
19 Oct 10 UTC
I think all these spoilt games should be cancelled personally, especially finished ones that have been destroyed by multi's
Alderian (2425 D(S))
19 Oct 10 UTC
And was just said, a 6 person draw will NOT hurt a persons GR if the draw is done in the first few years as the GR system will ignore those games as if they were canceled.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
19 Oct 10 UTC
Oh, and the first two years is tons of free wheeling diploming. Later in the game the diploming is often dictated by where things stand. But at the start, you can go any direction you want. So to me, to have that wasted is very annoying.

Just my opinion.

Harmony between advanced and underdeveloped countries
So, my last thread I posted was about the great war between USA and China because of exchange rates. I also noted about Japan declaring war against the Yen (china's bill).
This time I want to point out a more long-term subject which we will have to look into as time passes.

CHINA, USA WAR!!
Lately, a sort of war is happening between China and USA based on exchange rates. China has a fixed exchange rate. USA and the international society is pressuring China to change its policy to free changing exchange rates based on imports and exports. USA claims that "Chinese bills should be 40% higher in value than it is now." "This policy is disrupting the balance of the flow of money." ...

So I'm in this game and kicking ass. But now the remaining players are going to band together and force me to draw. Good play on their part. No problem with it at all. But I'm so much higher rated in GR, that I'll *lose* GR on anything more than a 4 way draw. We are at 6 right now...

Anyone fancy a game of Mornington Crescent? I propose the Simplified Version (Stovold’s Defence is still allowable during Forward Triangulation, but Back Doubling may only be attempted after a Northern Approach). Mainline stations are wild.

I'll start conservatively with: Tottenham Court Road.
