Dr. Hackenbush or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Look On The Bright Side of Life
I love philosophy/literature, sports, Trek, and comedy, and as I've already done threads on two (three) two of my three favorite things (four favorite things) four favorite things, it's time to do the third thing (fourth thing) foruth thing and pay homage to The Top Comedies Of All-Time! (So, nominate away (3 per person and has to be an original film, ie, no Shakespeare or Greek comedies) and when we get enough, say, 20 (or 42?) we'll vote for the Best Comedy Film Ever!

CDs taken over by bots
There are quite a few decent algorithms out there for playing Diplomacy. Sure, they do not negotiate, but they do make decent choices based on the situation. Why not implement one of them so when a player goes CD, such bot simply takes over the country, until another player steps in?

wtf?
we all know that news is more entertainment than current events, and everything has a spin. Lately though, I've been feeling like I'm living inside a reality TV show or something. Everythings 'gone pear shaped'.

Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

Hey! I'm pear shaped (or is that penguin shaped?)
Timur (673 D(B))

Yes, Sicarius, you're being given your role models to follow by movies/TV news (the same - all entertainment, as you say.)

Choose your persona from them and you, too, can become a celebrity or a joke. Either can make you millions.
Sicarius (673 D)

"gone pear shaped" like when you're looking at an apple and it suddenly goes pear-shaped.
I'm just saying everything seems to be taking on a certain.... fakeness. like reality tv or something. but its not television personas its everything, like world events.
Katsarephat (100 D)

Actually, it has a lot to do with television personas, when you consider people like Glenn Beck.

They're creating their personae from their analysis of the desires of the media and then projecting it by means of the media to put themselves at the mercy of the media.

it all seems so.... manufactured. like the ground zero mosque thing and terry jones burning qurans...
k-marts taking only cash, china building factories here, its just everything
philcore (317 D(S))

I see a great deal of manufacturedness and fakeness in Obama, so maybe you have a point.

Then again haven't you argued that 9/11 was manufactured? So maybe you just see it everywhere there's something you don't agree with. If you don't agree with it, then it cant be real. Kinda like Obama actually, now that I think about it.
jman777 (407 D)

I know your feeling sic. With certain stuff though (burning the qurans for example) I think it's really just that the stereotypes we think are jokes are actually freakishly true sometimes. And I'm actually a bit of a conspiracy theorist myself so yeah maybe the whole world is run by Freemasons but i don't really know. Haha
Thucydides (864 D(B))

The thing is, the crazy stuff, that seems like fiction, is what gets on the news.

So in that sense you are right, it is pure entertainment. There is the added element that, given the above statement, whack-jobs do stuff they know is crazy *in order* to get on the news. Like the Quran burning bigot etc.

I mean I know you knew that.... I'm not insulting your intelligence, but it can help to think about the basic motivations for these kinds of things... it disgusts you only slightly less.

Lol. Good luck out there.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

As for conspiracies -- if they can't cover up shit like the Laos thing or the Afghan leaks or whatever, then they can't cover up really big stuff.

That of course assumes that those expose's were legitimate, and not planned by the conspiracy. Hahahaha.

Anyway, yeah. I wouldn't worry about it. If you want some "real-life" conspiracy I recommend the books of Andrew J. Bacevich (American Hero).

Lol.
That's why I read more than I watch TV. You can still have a plain life (at least, compared to movie/media) in a book.
[call me a nutcase, but I'm sure others do this]
Sometimes I imagine a narrator of my life. Throughout an entire day, I'll think of how my actions could be put into words from an observable perspective. I'm indulged so much into it sometimes that I am no longer lucid. Some very odd instances would include: water fountain gurgling, talking to myself (a usual one), funny gaits, and my favorite, skipping down a hallway. Fun, fun, fun times.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
22 Sep 10 UTC
yeah i do that kind of shit zaza. don't worry, i'm nuts like you.

more often though, when i'm alone and talking to myself (because I always do), i frame things in terms of "you" and "me" which has led me to develop an alter ego named Mark. When he says "you" he's talking to me, and when I say "I" it's me talking.

Lol.

Just try and top THAT
largeham (149 D)

No, that makes two of us. Well sort of, I haven't named my 'alter ego', I just let it talk.

What are you doing watching so much tv anyway? I avoided that mistake years ago. Perhaps that's why I have a more positive outlook on real life than you Sic?

Anyone want to give an impression of another member of the site? Could be amusing...
Rules:
1. Not every post can be taking the piss out of obiwan, Draugnar and hellalt.
2. Please keep it fun. It is one thing to poke fun, quite another to be downright rude and offensive. Also, if a member asks you to stop impersonating them, do so.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Causality, Divinity, and Free Will (To Power!) ;)
OK, so a bit of a hiatus after that GREAT Philosopher Knockout Contest (congrats to Plato, Seneca, Kant and Locke for being selected as the Rushmore of Philosophy...I'm sure they're honored.) ;) Anyway, fresh from my Philosophy of Religion class to the WebDip forums: Does causality prevent free will (at least as we conventionally think of it), would a deity do so...and just how free CAN mankind be? If there is no/limited free will, is morality a farce?
